cheap and fast. hmmm. well im not sure those two can go together. But im all ears! i guess it depends on deffintion of fast. that 46ax is a good turner for the price though.

how hard are the shrikes to build, I'm asking for a friend that has never built anything and wants something small, fast, non-squirlly, low cost category.

Compared to many kits the Shrike is a unique but not difficult and fairly fast to build. The 40 kit requires no mods other than build it realizing it will be nose heavy. You should replace the balsa spars in the 10 kit with hard wood. They fly very well but not for a beginner.

It's a shame that Kangke no longer makes the F3D. It certainly is fast and looks good. I understand that a new one is on the way. Cheap? Well, just maybe

I agree with Mike, they're an easy build. On the 10 size, in addition to replacing the spars, if you're "upsizing" the engine, it's a good idea to move the firewall back 1/2" or so. This helps get the balance right. The two parts of the Shrike build I didn't like were dealing with the modified exhaust path (my fault, I used a rear exhaust engine), and covering it (the joint between the wing and fuse is a major pain to get right). If one wants something cheap and fast that looks the part, the Shrike is a great candidate. Heck, if I keep posting about it I may just have to build another.

It is an easy build, but I feel a caution is in order. If he's never built anything, this may not be a good first kit, unless someone with experience is around to help. The instructions are a bit vague and leave lots of room for errors. I remember several times during the build where I had to read the instructions over and over before I figured out what the heck they meant. If he's careful and takes the time to figure things out or ask, it'll be fine.

But when the Shrike is done right, it is worth all the hassle. Just buck up the spars. I have seen them buckle under not a lot of load, and if you do upsize the engine, loads are going to be a real factor.

both shrikes or one in paticular. Would it help to run some carbon fiber down the spar?

I may be ordering one for myself too after all this talk about it.

I am getting ready to build a new one. I am going to just replace the balsa spar with carbon fibre. I have heard that a lot of people use hardwood, but since I am going to be putting an OS 32 on a 10 size, I think that the greater strength is in order.

I had a blast with my Shrike 10. It had an OS25FX and it screamed! As far as covering, I got tired of trying to get the wrinkles out of the area where the fuse and wing meet. I just put some trim tape in this area and then covered up to the edge of it. The rest of the airplane was easy to cover. Go ahead and build one gismo, that way I can buy it from you!

Best bang for the buck has got to be the diamond dust ( http://www.diamonddustrc.com ). that little wing with a TT.36 moose can muffler, and 35%nitro with some practice and tuning is a 150mph plane.



Ive seen some claimes with the Jett.50 of 200mph, but realist speed with a .46 and 15% nitro is still 120-140mph.

If your freind has never built a kit before point him in the direction of a SIG Wonder.
...Not as fast as a shrike yet still quick and very agile and no bad habbits.
From a building standpoint the SIG is far better! It has Excellent plans and Photo Illustrated Instructions. A .25FX fits in the nose just fine and CG is easy to obtain by moving battery aft or mounting servos under the stab. (hint ) built it so the Stab bolts onto the fuse ( wing mount blocks have plenty of room) and skip the access hatch on the bottom of the fuse.

Also the Wonder is a complete kit, it has all the hardware he will need ( hinges, torque rods, motor mount, horns clevises, ect.) while the Shrike is a box of wood plans and type written instructions.

after flying the snot out of the Wonder then go for a Shrike!
