Default New Whiplash Flies from launcher

Syd,
I just got my Whiplash, so I'm curious about some of the mods you've done to yours. I'm also putting a Jett 50 FIRE on mine, so I'm asking about the mods, because our Whiplashes will be similar. I've got a lot of questions.

1) Why did you move the servos out farther?(see question 2 & 3)

2) Were you concerned about the placement of the control horns?

3) Were you concerned about the length of the servo arms?

4)What is the length of your servo arms?

I'm pretty sure I understand the fuel tank mod - it gets you 2 more ounces of fuel. But....

5) Did you cut all the way through the wing? One problem with the rear exhaust is tank height, so lowering the tank by cutting out floor of the tank location probably the only solution.

6) What should I be careful with, if I do this tank mod?

7) Would you use the 2 degrees of right thrust if you built another one?

8) How did you secure the pipe? Bolt all the way through?

Thanks for your help.

Default Whiplash questions

I moved the servos out to get the pustrods away from
the fins.
I feel long servo arms pushing rods attached to short horns
at high speeds is trouble.
My arms are cut down to 3/4 inch..

When you cut out the bottom of the tank the tank can sit on the floor of the plane..on foam..
Stuff foam around the bottom edges of the tank well to keep fuel
from getting back into the wing
The back of my tank bottom rests against the thro. servo
with a small peice of foam in between.

More to follow...

Default Whiplash questions

On my last reply I missed the word well in " the bottom
of the tank well"

The reason I use 2 degrees right thrust is;
it keeps the aircraft from getting twisty and nasty when
it leaves the launcher or your hand. When you pull straight up
after flying by, it goes straight up..
During radar runs I try to fly 20 feet high straight down the runway without having to correct for the skid factor with ailerons.

For the pipe holder I use a light weight fiberglass dowel drilled
into a small block of light weight bulsa that is glued between the top and bottom of the wing. the dowel goes all the way to the bottom of the wing.

Got anything else?

Default Whiplash

Thank you Pete;
Hope I can keep it together long enough to get some
good Radar runs on it.
I would like to know what prop IS the fastest for a
Whiplash/Jetfire Combo.
I think we have enough of these combos around
the greater Delaware Valley Area to find out.

Right trust? We you got a powerfull engine it will go a little bit left but not that much 'cause it goes right straight to the skys ( mine does with the Jett Q500) why using volt regulator?? I fly all my plane on 6 volt without any probs...

If you check my whiplash specs you will see I'm using
lithium-ion batteries which come off the charger at 8.4 volts.
JR-8411 don't care for that much voltage so thats why I
drop it down to 5.7 volts.

Ric:
The second box arrived in realitively good shape.
If you look at my launcher "post" I stated that I glued
in some thin plywood around the foot pedal and everything
worked fine.

Many thanks for the Whip. I'm sure there is another one
down there in LA. with my name on it.
You missed the pipe holder so I built one..
How do you like the fancy end stand on the launcher?

It looks great, the PVC is a pretty good idea, we might have to pay you some royalties and adopt that method?

Default Whiplash

The post right above yours has the E-mail address where
you can get one.

I'm trying to get this one to go 200 MPH and I'm
going to start the Radar runs this coming week
weather permitting.

Hey Upperking,
Just click on the Whiplash ad at the top of this forum. That will take you to the Whiplash website.
You can get the Whiplash in white gelcoat(some sanding and finishing req'd) in about two days for $200. You paint it, install the R/C gear and engine, glue on the fins, and away you go!
I should have mine done in about 10 days. I travel a lot for work, that slows me down. I'm also having a simple paint job done on it by a pro - that always takes extra time.

Syd,
Thanks for the answers to my questions. I'm really looking forward to your radar runs. With the Jett 50 FIRE, turning an 8.8 x 9.75 at 21000 (in the air) the speed calculates at 193mph!

Do you think the plane can be safely hand launched with the prop you have on it now? I didn't buy the launcher, but am starting to think I should.

Default Whiplash

The APC 9-8 has enough thrust for a safe hand launch
with my Whiplash but the Launcher eliminates all the problems
of a bad launch from people who are not qualified to do
something like that. Most folks have trouble giving a smooth
lanuch.

Great looking machine Syd! If anyone can get that thing going 200mph you are the one to do it.

Hope to be out there with you for those radar runs. If my engine comes in I'll have my new Whiplash along with my old Dust, both with the same engine/prop combo.

Default Hinges

Syd, What do you mean you "cut open on the underside"? I absolutely hate the hinges on my Whiplash!!!!!!!!! Besides being stiff, the elevons have constant up-pressure. So when I turn on the plane, the 8411's want to push the elevons down back to neutral, this causes a ton of chatter from the servo's and my guess is a really bad battery draw.

I'm thinking about cutting the hinges off all together and installing my own. What's your thought on that?

Default Whiplash Hindges

Flyboy;
The hindges on a whiplash have two layers holding them
on. I carefully cut the bottom layer out with a dremel tool
and exacto knife. The top layer is kevlar so make sure you
dont cut or nick that. Once you get a gap cleaned out then
you can exersize the hindge up and down and loosen them
up. When the kevlar starts to crack on the top edges, thats
enough. Then you MUST clean and seal the underside opening
with tape. I use BLENDERM water proof medical tape.
I would not remove the ailerons and hindge them cause
there is not enough material to put the hindges into at
200 MPH speeds.

You are right about the ailerons wanting to set with a little
up in them. Thats about the right amount to use when you
launch the Whiplash. Then I trim them in the air to a flight
neutral. The 8411's cry most any time.

Default New Whiplash Flies from launcher

Hi again Syd,
Does your Whip balance at the point given in the instructions? I think(don't have them in front of me) that the CG is located 2.5 inches behind the front edge of the opening for the radio gear. Is this working well for you? If not, where is your CG located?

I agree that cutting the Kevlar hinge would not be wise. It's too bad that Flyboy's plane is already painted - that makes it difficult to remedy. I've gotten my elevons to relax down to about 1 or 2 degrees up, by sanding the gelcoat nearly off and exercising them.

I've weighed every component individually and have made a list of each. I don't have my Jett 50 yet, but so far, everything totals to 3lbs, 6oz. If the Jett weighs 12oz, that puts me at 4 lbs, 2oz, dry weight. Flying weight should be 4.5lbs.

If anyone is interested, I could post a list of components and their weights.

Default 4lb 2oz

This would be the lightest posted here yet. Most are 4lb 6oz to 4lb 10oz. Mine right at 4lb 8oz with a nelson qm40. I have a slightly larger battery pack (1000mah) than you need but i dont want to worry about voltage drop with the big servos.

I think the 12 oz is without a pipe/muffler or prop.

Mike,
You are correct. I've included the weight of a 9 x 4 APC plus a 2 gram correction, since I don't have my 8.8 x 9.25 and 8.8 x 9.75's yet. Here is a list of the components weighed on an electric scale, in grams. This scale is accurate to within 1 gram.
The weight is .56oz over my previous post, I forgot about a couple of items when I posted that 4lb, 2oz post. The new weight should be 4 lbs, 2.56oz, dry weight.

The fuel tank is surprizingly heavy. I also don't have any protective foam rubber added on the list, or any adhesive for the fuel tank. Those are unknowns at this time.

Sanded airframe, spot filled ready to prime: 866g
V-tail unit: 68g
Hitec 555 rec'vr: 24g
factory carbon pushrod set: 24g
Sullivan S557 metal control horn set: 4g
2, MPX Royal digital, dual ball bearing servos: 92g
1, Hitec 225BB throttle servo: 26g
factory 6oz fuel tank, complete: 54g
Dave Brown pipe mount: 4g
hatch cover: 10g
factory hardware set: 20g
stock MACS 1140 7.5cc pipe: 66g
720 maH , 5 cell NiMH 6v batt pack: 68g
APC 9 x 4 prop(dont have the 8.8x9.75yet) 22g
Heavy duty MPX nylon servo arms: 4g
tuned pipe coupler: 16g
Paint, est 5 oz: 142g
On/Off switch, custom wiring, very small: 8g
Fuel line, estimated: 18g
throttle linkage: 10g
Total: 1546g

1546g = 3 lbs, 6.56 oz + Jett 50 FIRE = 4 lbs, 2.56 oz, dry weight

I really hoping the paint job will turn out a little lighter than my estimate.

I'll post the weight of the painted airframe with nothing installed after the paint cures, as well as my final weight.

Jett .50 FIRE arrived today. It weighs 408 grams or 14.39 ounces.

That is with the spinner, propshaft, header spacer and header machine screws.

The high rise header weighs .85 ounces, but is uncut, so should be a little lighter after tuning the pipe.

Altogether the total weight is now up to 4 pounds, 5.8 ounces. Since the Jett 50 was 2.39 ounces over what I thought it would weigh, I'm really gonna have to watch the weight of the paint and everything else.

Default Whiplash weight

Syd, thanks for the reply. I'll try flying it the way it is. But I don't think I'll be doing any flying after the last two days. Yesterday my Dominator lost its wing a full throttle It went from a plane to a lawn dart. The Jett Fire 50 looks OK, I'll know better once I get all the mud off of it. Then today my Ultra Stick had a mind of its own. I either had a batter failure or my Dean's antenna came unplugged. But it went in very hard, total lose.

So, I'm alittle on the scared side right now. My Whiplash looks to good to fly it. Once I figure out how to reduce my file size on my digital camera, I'll post pictures.

My Whiplash weighs 4lbs 5oz with:

(2) 8411's
(1) JR 531 throttle servo
Jett Fire 50 with straight header and MAC tuned pipe
JR 700 receiver
800mah NM pack
JR switch w/charge port

The straight header and pipe gave me a few headaches with clearance, but I got it figured out (I hope).

JJ
