One note when installing the verticl fins, make sure you leave the fuselage hatch off so that you can distinguish the top from bottom. Somebody I know left it on and glued the fins upside down
ROFL, I thought only I did stupid stuff like that. [:@] I spent a long time getting exactly 2* right thrust in my Cload Dancer with a inverted OS 90, then turned the fuse over[:@], yep exactly 2* left thrust! It still flys great.

My favorite is installing the fuel tank "right-side up" while working on the inverted model... [X(]

I built a shrike 40 arf and I'm not impressed with it's performance. The engine is a webra 55 with a mac's tuned pipe mounted sidewinder style ( pipe under fuse to the right of the nose wheel). It's turning an APC 9x10 @ 17,000 on the ground and unloads well in the air on 15% wildcat fuel. Several things. One, the top speed is much less than expected guesstimated top speed about 135 mph(must be that landing gear drag, lots of wind noise on close passes). Two, the high speed stall is wicked with hard elevator (don't try this low!) Three, this thing want's to land hot, too slow it just drops out of the air. My favorite planes in order of combined factors of speed, handling and ease of use are #1 Diamond dust (standard) #2 Viper (some strength and incidence mods). #3 Diamond Dust (clipped wing).#4 Whiplash (heavy but rugged)#5 Force One. #6 Shrike 40 arf.

Whoa! [X(]

That's plenty fast enough for me, son.

Freakinfast- A 9x10 is a LOT of prop there... have you tried an APC 9x8 or 9x9?

The SHrike is draggy 135 is actually VERY good!

Razor, yes I did, and the 9x9 is too small and can't hold the engine back ( sounds like a ducted fan screaming). The verdict from observers and myself was the plane was slower or the same but a lot more noise. It would seem that at high revs that the whole wing hits a resonance and starts to howl. Yes the prop is balanced and no it's not flutter. I've encountered this before with the Force One. On the Force this can be fun, you make a close pass and bank away so that you show it's belly to the spectators and you can feel the sound

He said "the top speed is much less than expected guesstimated top speed about 135 mph" , to me that means it didn't go that fast.

I'd say lose the landing gear, but the airfoil is too thick to really go fast.

I didn't phrase the sentence correctly. We thought it seemed well short of a previously radared 150mph viper, so we guesstimated the shrikes top speed to be about 135 mph.

If I had to do it over again I would go with a TT or a OS AX 46 with a APC 9x7 for speed and a 9x8 for bearing life. I have 6 Evolution 46 NT's and the last 3 three have all had what I consider to be early bearing failure. The last three also have different main bearings(steel cages) than the first three (poly cages/better).I've since replaced them with Boca bearing #ENK-100SH. So I no longer recommend the Evo's to anyone. I don't think the extra speed of the webra 55 is worth the fuel consumption for this application.

I do that quite a bit even when replacing tanks, I mark the tank with a marker to make sure its right after i stuff it in their.

Default RE: Engine for the Lanier Shrike 40?

I've decided to re-engine mine. Since my club has a noise restriction I need to try something a bit different. Bob gave me some good advice as always. You can see the thread [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4394938/tm.htm]here.[/link] This should be fun.

Kmot, of the coices you have listed I only have experience with the Magnum and the Webra. I'd have to say the Webra would be a great choice. Mine has seen a lot of use/abuse and still screams. It's a shame Webra quit making this one as it's a real lightweight powerhouse.

Thanks for the info, John. I'll pass this on to the plane's next owner. We pulled the engine and electronics for another plane.

Cool! Welcome to the Jett fray...

You decided on the ARF right? Did you get it yet?

More importantly, are you going to be "allowed" to fly this one? (hint, hint- nudge, nudge..)

Well, actually, this is my 2nd Jett. I also have a Jett FIRE 120L that I use for pulling tree stumps.

I have already ordered the ARF, yes. But it is on backorder. [:@]

And there are no restrictions on crashing.....er, flying this one!

Also, my wife was a little embarrased when I told her I was not flying the F-20 because of her 'emotional attachment' concerns about it. She said I was "blaming her" for not flying it. So I think I am off the hook about that one now.

BTW, the ARF is back in stock at Tower so mine should be shipping soon.

What about a Nelson Quickie 500 in a 40 Shrike? The motor is heavy. Do you think it is possible to balance it. I just happen to have one available and I think that this motor would help reduce the draggy airframe factor. Otherwise it would be my Jett 50 FIRE sitting idle.

I just finished a 15 Shrike with a hot electric setup. I may not be flying over 100 mph but it seems more like 130 because of its size. Its a kick to fly but you need good eyesight. Cheap, and easy to build, but the $$$ is in the power train.

Wow! A Nelson quickee in the Shrike... I don't see why not, it is a bit of a waste of a fast enginer though--- I guess it just depends on how "fast" of a prop you can get away with whilst hand launching.

Get pics!

I know, I know. But I've had lots of quickies so I thought I'd try something different. What do you mean about a fast prop for launching. With the deltas and an 8.75x9 we just aim and let go. That won't wok with the Shrike?
