Westfield Hawk
Hi all, has anyone built one of these? i am just wondering because if fitted with a .40 engine they are supposed to give a Magnum a run for it's money.
Just finished mine and will be test flying tomorrow morning, just wondered if anyone had any experiance / thoughts?
Thanx
Chris

RE: Westfield Hawk
Hi Mike, build one !!!!!
Very, very fast, and i mean very fast, mine has a MDS .40 pro with a 10x6 prop and it is amazing, i will change the prop tomorrow for an 8x8 just to make it rev quicker. Seriously, i have been flying for 25 years and it is the fastest thing i have seen fly. Now i can see why they say it gives a Magnum a run for it's money, it is amazing.
Build one, 25 bits of wood to cut out, ok a fair bit of shaping / sanding is required but well worth the effort, you can build it over a weekend.
Please remember, it is designed for a .15 to a .20 really, i built my wings out of 12mm (half inch) balsa instead of the 6mm (1/4 inch) as recommended, everything else is as per plan.
Hope this helps a bit, if you want anymore info then just ask.

RE: Westfield Hawk
Hi guys, just a quick update on the Westfield Hawk, I have now fitted an OS .46 DF engine with a 9x7 prop, added 2oz of lead to the rear end and now it is even faster and , to be honest, easier to fly. I think i had it a bit nose heavy to start with and it was a bit too stable, now? hehehe superb!!
If anyone buils one, add a fair bit of downthrust as without there is a major trim shift between power on and power off.

Search brings up this link :
http://www.modelflying.co.uk/pages/a...001113rcme.csv
but it does not work... Please post a picture !!
Regarding downthrust, it may rather be a problem of elevator / wing longitudinal angle. Reduce it.

RE: Westfield Hawk
Sorry all, been busy with this work thingy !!!
Ref; the Westfield Hawk, i have now carried out major testing, engine changes, prop changes etc.
First off, BUILD ONE !
God they are fast i have now to be honest, reverted back to my MDS .40 PRO i feel this engine gives the best power / user friendly advantage. i did try the OS .46 D/Fan engine but it seemed to rev quicker but no advantage in straight line speed, i think the actual power ie hp is lower than the MDS, i have now gone back to the original 10 x 6 prop and it now performs again.
If anyone has any questions then email me @ [email protected].

RE: Westfield Hawk
If you think your MDS .40 has more power than an OS .46 DF engine... you've got some more testing to do... The first thing that springs to mind is that a 9x7 is WAY too much prop for the .46 DF. With these engines, like all reciprocating piston engines, power is a product of torque and rpm. You can increase power by either generating more torque at the same rpm, or by generating the same torque at a higher rpm. Since miracles do not exist in the world of piston engines, the OS .46 DF has more power than a sport .46 because it can turn higher rpms... it does not have more torque (more likely the opposite).
So if you prop that DF engine down to "sport" rpm with a huge prop, you will get disappointing results.
Another thing is that your airframe may not be suited for a DF engine. Since these need to turn up high to achieve big power, they need to be propped small. Your plane may have too much drag to benefit from a DF engine because the props used on DF engines are simply too small to generate enough thrust to speed up your airframe. Balsa sheets sanded to resemble a wing may be the first thing you can work on.

Try this link, it will take you right to Westfield Models home page... http://www.westfieldmodels.co.uk/index.htm
I like the looks of the Tornado, and it would certainly stand out from what you typically see in North America...
The Hawk was originally a free plan in RCME (what a great magazine, how come we get stuck with crap like MAN? ..oops, did I just say that out loud??), is a very straightforward build, so I would imagine that the others shown would be just as simple.
Speaking of Brit magazines, who's picked up the current issue of R/C Model World with the FREE mini-Kangaroo plan??? I've got mine, and what a sweet and simple plane!!

Mini roo does look nice doesn't it!
My friend who built the Hawk, has also built the tornado for leccy nose prop. I'll get him to swing by this thread.
