Default Which was the biggest surprise?

I have always tested my engines on a 9x8 APC and while the fuel % was different on a couple I think you guys will be surprised at how they ranked in my little corner of tach numbers---

Go ahead and rank 'em if you like then I will post the RPM figures I got a little later- In no particular order<>

The OS-50SX used a Tower muffler

OS-46FX Tower muff

The OS-50FSR (Heli) used a Bisson strap-on muffler made for a .90

The K&B was tested with stock, OS-35FP muffler, and Ultra Thrust mufflers

Webra was stock muffler

Rossi's with mini-tuned pipe

SJ-50 with Sport (Red) muffler/pipe

Enya Stock

The 9x8 is a pretty big stick, I'll go with cubic inches, then go with what some of these engines were ranked at during a test that was done more than 10 years ago by a major model magazine. the WEBRA .50 was at the top of the .40 sized list at that time. If you need a 9x8 to get going, then you don't have a speed plane, you're driving a meat wagon!

I'm going to change my mind and guess that the .50 heli engine rules the roost.

To me the K&B-48 was the most surprising going from a stock muffler all the way to the Ultra Thrust. The OS-50FSR Heli is probably 20 years old, has little to no compression but is one of the best running engines I have ever had and I cannot even find a suitable muffler- it runs with anything strapped to it-

9x8 APC

Jett-50 Jett Stream 15% Nelson Plug 17.2
K&B- 48 Ultrathrust 5% OS-8 16.2
Webra-50GT Stock 5% Idlebar 16.2
Rossi-53 Mini- Tuned 5% Thunderbolt 16.0
OS-50SX Tower 15% OS-8 15.7
Rossi-45 Mini- Tuned 5% OS-A3 15.6
OS-50FSR Bisson 90 15% Idlebar 15.4
YS-45 Stock 20% OS-8 15.1
K&B-48 OS-35FP 15% OS-8 15.1
OS-46FX Tower 5% OS-8 15.1 Irvine-46 Fox-50 5% Thunderbolt 14.6
Enya-50SS Stock 5% OS-8 14.5
Fox-50 Stock 5% Idlebar 14.4
K&B-48 Stock 5% OS-8 13.7 Quiet

I see what you are saying about the K&Bs' gain, that's surprising!. What I would like to see here is the WEBRA .50 on 15% with an aftermarket mini pipe. I'll bet you see a jump. I've run my WEBRA .50 for years on 15% and an open header. I'm curious now to see what it turns a 9x8, I can't remember.

You use a head-shim on the Webra? The Webra I had for the test is a few years old with the standard muffler- I would have liked to run a UT muffler on it---

Other than the Jett the Webra-50GT is the most impressive engine I have had... Light, super powerful, SUPER fast transition, easy to tune...

I was thinking about running all these again (whichever ones I still have ) on a 10x6 APC.... I have run some of them on a 12.25x3.75APC fun-fly prop. and the Rossi-45 was the king there...at least against the Webra, OS-50SX, OS-50FSR Heli etc.

I really like goofing off with these engines but I try to run a sport prop, sport plug, sport fuel etc. kinda everymans test---

That Rossi-53 I just got is a monster, I bet if I propped something like a 10x8APC it'd smoke everything but the Jett-

**** NOTE ****

The YS-45 was run with a stock muffler which does not do the engine justice, if run with a 7.5CC pipe it'd be WAY up there---

I was wondering if I have an extra shim in there too, it's been quite a while since I rebuilt the engine. I think the extra shim comes with the new engine, too.

Razor, nice testing - thanks for sharing the results!

I am impressed with the Webra being right up there with the others with its stock exhaust. Like the other guys, I'd like to see what the Webra would do with an Ultrathrust or Jett style muffler.

I'd love to see your "everymans test" results too when you get a chance to run them.

Thanks again.

Hi Razor,

Thanks for publishing the results. I wonder how the West 50 would do against the Jett 50. My West 50 turns a 9x7 17,900 RPM and does turn 18,000+ RPM as it starts sucking in air bubbles (as the tank nears empty)....hmmmm I wonder if I can lean it out a bit
