I put a Jett 50 in Patriot 40 and it hauls BUTT. However it's NOT fast enough for the Jett 50.... I want more speed!

What should I get next?

Thinking about a Shrike or a Diamond Dust. Any other suggestions?

Here's my first attempt at building something fast. The fuselage came out a little wide but the wing is rather thin and really swept. I plan to power with a .40 size motor. no landing gear, just hand launch. I'm hoping it will be pretty fast. So far it's really light. Remember this is my first attempt at anything fast so be gentle.

I think the suggestion to consider a Q500 for the Jett is a good one, esp. with a couple of ARF's out there that work pretty well (mith minor mods detailed on some thread here). Although I have a Magnum and it scoots fairly well, I am really not in love with the flight characteristics, and besides it is not all that clean of a design [plus the color scheme sucks but that can be fixed]. Quickies on the other hand go like snot and they actually turn well by design (unlike the Magnum).

I agree wholeheartedly regarding the Magnum not turning well. I MUCH prefer the sharp turn-in of my Diamond Dust, versus the lumbering slow turn-in of my Magnum.

Plus the Magnum will not be that much faster than a Patriot (I've seen Razor-RCU's Jett .50 Patriot fly and it's almost as fast as my West 50 Magnum). Something about the Dust (small-size, unique design), makes it appear faster than it's really going. Plus they look so cool in the air, especially with a tuned pipe going down their "back"

If you want real fast, build the Q-500 as others mentions, or put the engine in a Q-40 airframe.

You do not need a $600 composite bird. You can buy a Napier from Matney Models www.matneymodels.com for about $130 (Basic kit) - build total is about $225 or less for a finished airframe. Also, contact Don a www.pylonworld.com he was fabricating some of the older glass/foam basic QM40 kits - he may have a few of the classics available.

Planes are smooth and swift - not that hard to build actually. And with the SJ-50 and the right prop, I can pretty much guarantee 150mph +

Not much scares me flying-wise, and landings usually never bother me, but when the engine quits on the Magnum, with the slow turn rate and piss-poor glide, I get nervous about making a stupid mistake on the setup. My first flight was in an admittedly less-than-ideal spot with a narrow approach and with large trees on two sides, one side being on the approach. When the engine quit, okay thought I, I'll switch to higher rates and bring'er in. The first time I pulled some backstick in a turn, it snapped hard and did two or three rolls before I even reacted, and ended up in a steep dive over the trees. Hmm, better go easy on that elevator was my next thought. Yeah, I got it straightened around and brought it in fine, but that was a shorts-staining moment for a first flight. I don't have the CG way back, just too much elevator throw and I got ham-handed.

After that, I hit the club sod field and spent three or four tanks doing large horizontal eights at maybe 100 feet to program my fingers a bit better. And go figure, the more I got used to it the less it turned me on to fly it. Yeah it's fun, but could be a lot better.

i have the magnum with V1, the C of G is back at around 141mm (further back than recommended which i believe is 125 - 135mm). It still disappoints me on elevator response...and hovers like a pig..[>:]
