My buddy has pylon racers and we want to run practice laps together. I've got the F-20 Tigershark kit and everything I need to build it. No desire to spend the money on a true pylon plane. I'm wondering if I can keep up with him. This is informal. 2 buddies flying early in the morning at an AMA club with nobody else around. I'm not trying to compete with a pylon plane. We just want to run laps together for fun. I can't go up there and run laps with my 4*40. Its 1/2 his speed and he will run me over. We need to have planes that are 'reasonably' matched in speed so that he doesn't catch me and lap me in 2 minutes. That's where the danger comes in - when he is overtaking a significantly slower plane. He won't even see it until its too late. If I have something at least reasonably fast, he will beat me, but he wont lap me from behind-- which is the dangerous part. Make sense?

I've got 4 options here. These 4 are it. I'm not buying another engine.

OS 46LA (NIB)
K&B 45 (NIB)
MDS 58 (NIB)
Tower Hobbies 75 (2 gallons through it)

I plan to use electric retracts. Most likey e-flite.

I want to use the TH 75 because I want it to be fast. I'm just not sure if it will be THAT much faster.

Which of those 4 would you pick?

I have a Super Tigre 60 in mine. I would suggest a ST90 or a Jett 50 if you want to keep up

WOW! I was not expecting that answer, but thank you. I don't want to 'race' with him. I just dont want to be so slow that he laps me.

He thinks I will be faster than him with any stock .45 engine.

I built this plane last year but haven't flown it. A guy who built 5 of them said that 4 had the tail section break right off. You will have to reinforce the fuse just in front of the tail feathers. I didn't see the part about how to reinforce the tail. Is it mentioned in your build thread?

No I didn't reinforce the rear as buddy did with epoxy cloth etc. I just wanted to show you the dorsal fin I added. (I think it will spread out the stress on the upper surface better). Soon after that I had to pack it up and start home renovations, so I never got around to reinforcing the inside and bottom. I would suspect the failure point comes from the corners of the bottom hatch. Everything he told me was via PM so no photos or explanation.

Is that the 40 size or 60 size plane ?? I've had them both sizes.. on the .40
I used a Rossi .45... on the .60 I ran a Tower .75... great engines.

It's the 40 size.

A new possibility just arrived in the mail. An SK .80 ringed. It's almost square so should be a high revver. The TH .75 is ABC. It will be fun to see how they compare.

.. You might be able to get the big bore engine in the plane, but
the smaller engine with higher RPM will most likely out run it, IMO,

Not interested in buying a Jett for anything. I have no doubt they're nice engines.

I'm trying to get back into small glow airplanes --- cheap. I've been flying giant scale for years and it's getting too expensive. Every plane costs minimum $2,500--$3,000.

I recently bought a Direct Connection Doddger Q500 kit with NO INTENTION of ever flying it in a sanctioned race. I just want to have fun with 2 or 3 buddies who DO race. They want more people on the course while they are practicing and I like speed, so I bought the Q500 kit and a NOS Tigershark .39 engine. They're running Jett engines. I only want to be fast enough to NOT get lapped. I want to be a little slower than they are so there is less chance of us getting tangled up. For me it's a cheap kit, cheap engine and cheap receiver. For those guys, it's very expensive equipment. I just want to be on the course. I don't want to run with em..... but I also don't want to get lapped because that's dangerous. Hppe that makes sense.

I was hoping a bigger prop and more pitch would outrun it. Maybe a 3-blade with high pitch? Like a 3-blade 10x13 on a .75---.80 engine?

At some point more pitch is just gonna stall and never get up on step. This is all stuff I've never played with before.

The Q500 kit sounds like a plan... I have this Sonic sport Q500 plane I'm getting ready to fly.
Years ago my group was going to race each other with these using the GMS .47 engines, but
our group fell apart and I stopped flying... I resurrected the plane and put a new OS .25 in it
just for fun flying... It should be cool... I really don't care about all out speed anymore.

Yep.... a lot of fun was had by all back in those days. I still have a .60 size NIB I'll put up later. This was one bad ass plane,
I have a Tower .75 NIB that I'll use as well, just like my old plane. I have some of the new servo operated retracts too.

I have been flying mine for years. Great plane. Built per plans with no modifications. Thunder Tiger .46 with a Mac's header and quiet pipe. 10 X 7 APC prop. 10% Cool Power. It has fixed gear with small tires. Moves right along.
