Default What engine for Patriot XL

Hello,

I am almost finished with my patriot XL and I was planning to use an ASP 91 in it. After a mishap with the engine during break in and no warranty coverage in the USA, I am going to buy a Magnum 91XLS. But before to do that, I would like to know if I should buy a bigger engine? Sorry, no JET engine - I don't have enough fund for them[]
I have retracts on my patriot XL and I sheeted the wings completely using 1/16 balsa. I have also a Super Tiger G20/23 that needs a home.

Thank you for your inputs,

Le fou

The Patriot XL with a sport 91 flys about the same speed as a fast trainer and that isn't too fast. Now if you put a tuned pipe on board you will go a little faster. I haven't seen one with the Jett 90 but if you are wanting to go fast the 91 sport engine isn't going to get it here. I have the 40 size Patriot and it is hard to get it up to speed too but not as hard as the larger Patriot. To go fast you have to have spend money and that is with anything.

Here are some specs for a ASP 91, I know it is not a JETT engine but it is not bad: http://www.justengines.unseen.org/ASP91sr.htm
13,800 on a 12.5x6 bolly. Jett web's site state 14,300 (SJ 90L) for a 12x6. So I wonder if a Magnum or ASP engine will give me good performances which I hope are better than a fast trainer but not as good as a JETT engine.

What do you think?

I fly mine with a OS91fx-while not the fastest airplane at the field it is alot of fun and looks good in flight-my Shoestring will outrun my Patriot XL-The patriot has been clocked at 109 mph level flight and no wind. I have heard of people getting 165-175 mph out of them but have not seen it and my budget will not allow it. I am running robart retracts as well as flaps on my bird-good luck and have fun..

Seems to be some confusion out there from the slow gang. No, you do not put a Jett 90 LX in the 60 airframe, you stuff it into the 40 airframe after you install the retracts. Now you will scoot along fairly well in the l30-150 range proped correctly. Like funflyer4 says, there is just no substitute for quality and cubic inches.

there is no substitute. Jett 90 all the way.

I have the Patriot XL with OS91fx up front and all the electronics in the back and the battery/4 oz of lead near elevators. I don't see how you can fit a 120 engine up front and then put tons of lead in the back to balance. Talk about flying brick... If you already have the 91 sport engine, slap a Jettstream muffler on it and you will get signif improvement. I have 2 Jett 90's and love them, but got them on RCU for good price. Otherwise, they're spendy. I put mine in nicer airframes like the Cermark F16.

The Magnum 91 is basically the same engine as the ASP 91.

Either one actually performs pretty well.

The ST90 is also a good choice for the money..... (inexpensive, especially when they run the rebate sales)

The OS91FX is also a great choice.

Key here is, any of these engines will fly the plane well. Use a 12x6 or 11x9 prop to start with.

If you want some better performance, install a jett-stream muffler on any of the above listed engines. Stick with 12x6, 12x8, 11x9 props.

Bob
