Default I Finish SHRIKE 10

I'm not completely finish , just a couple of little things to do.
This is my first kit build, Spent half of summer and winter building it,
in my spare time.
The bottom is Neon Orange Monokote, it burns to easy and the color
will come off if you get it to hot, being careful I had one bad spot.
Building the plane was sometimes confusing,I would be working on the inside
fuse thinking the top was up and actually it was the bottom. Messed up on the
trottle, ailiron brackets, but caught it in time before the glue died.
How fast you guys think it will fly ????

How does it balance? I am about to build a similar project with an OS 32, but will also add retract landing gear. Let us know how it flies? Think the only thing I would change is to go to a less weighty battery such as a 350 mah pack. You can fly it a couple of times and then quick charge it at the field to allow for flying all day. The airplane is a beaut.

You'd better put the engine on the stand first to properly set the pipe, because it looks way too long...

Yep, I will put it on the test stand and break it in and tune the pipe.
I want fly it until this spring which is a way off. I still have some time
to fine tune the plane.
I thought about putting a lipol battery in it to loose weight, and other smaller batteries.
but I figure its my first speed plane, and it should be fast enough for a first timer.
The battery is what I had on hand.I still might put a lighter battery in it.

You can get a good quality 350 mah nickle metal hydride pack for very little money. I have a buddy that flies a Shrike 10 I built for him on a 350, and he usually get 3 or 4 flights before he recharges. Flights are about 6 minutes as he is carrying a rather small tank.

The balance is 3 3/8" from the leading edge at the first rib ,next to the root rib.
Very touchy ,but will seat still (level) if I don't touch it .If I moved the battery pack
1/8" one way or the other will throw the balance completely off . Couple of more pics....

I hope you did something about the spars, they have a reputation for breaking. Most guys are putting in CF spars. But sandwiching them with ply would probably work just as well.

Yes, beautiful job! That pilot and cockpit are great. If that is a .32, you should get 130 mph out of it. The single spar looks questionable, alot depends on the strength of the sheeting whether or not this plane survives. I've blown out double balsa spars on similar projects.....wood selection is important. Not much you can do now except always make sure you have a cameraman ready whenever you fly it .

A 350 pack is perfect, but make sure you use some kind of visual aid to let you know when the pack is low...

You can also use a 2-cell lipo pack but you will have to use a step down transformer since the voltage will be too high. A lipo will give you longer duration, make sure you buy a good quality lipo...not those cheap no name brands.

My Shrike with a 15cv screams...I don't know exactly how fast it is, but my guess is that it does over 80mph. The roll rate is the best I've ever seen. It looks like a blur while rolling...totally awesome plane.

Can't wait to fly one with a 32 and retracts...

Got your kit on order, and hopefully will have the 32 in hand late this week. Just need to decide on the retracts. Constrution to start soon. CF for the spars. Any more requests?

REQUESTS? No retracts, just glass the belly with a strip of 4 oz cloth and land in the grass.

Yes . Its a OS 32 ,
My spars are spruce, except for the leading edge which is basswood.
I ran out of spruce, and didn't feel like a 100 mile round trip to the HS.
So my local hardware store had some basswood.
I also put in a carbon fiber arrow that runs from wing tip to wing tip.
I also Gorilla Glue the arrow at all ribs and fuse. All the ribs are Gorilla glue
to the spars too. I didn't sheet the wing,
thinking its got to be strong enough.
I hope the wings hold together at high speed.

The CF spar should make it good to go, but don't under estimate the strength of sheeting, it helps to keep the wing from twisting and from warping. Iron on covering adds a lot of strength too, but a little bit of sheeting helps to stiffen it up even more with little weight gain.

Looking good radcom !

Two words :

- I would have reduced the aileron width so as not to have it extend to the wingtip, but a few centimeters before. Less flutter that way.

- the servos rubber pads sleeves are mounted upside down. The flat end shall be facing downwards ...

Keep us posted

Gotta have retracts. Already have a belly landing Shrike...best plane I've ever flown built and rebuilt by jlingrel.

Well if you're stuck on using retracts, then I request you set the ailerons up on a flap switch.

Make that built and rebuilt. We didn't know about the weak spar thing until it was to late.

THE LEADING EDGE OF THE WING DOES HAVE BALSA SHEETING THAT GOES BACK 3 1/2", TOP
AND BOTTOM OF THE WING FROM TIP TO TIP.THE REAR EDGE OF THE WING HAS 1 1/2" OF SHEETING.
I HAVE PUT GORILLA GLUE AT EVERY JOINT OF THE WING AND FUSE FOR ADDED STRENGTH .MAN' THAT STUFF IS STRONG.
I THINK IT WILL HOLD WITH MINIMAL TWISTING AND WARP. I HOPE, I HOPE....

STRYKASS:
ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THE BRASS SLEEVE THAT THE SERVO SCREW GOES INTO ?
IT DOES LOOK CONFUSING IN THE PICTURE.
I DO HAVE THE BRASS SLEEVE UPSIDE DOWN , THE SERVO SCREW HAS A FLAT SURFACE TO IT.
WILL ADDING CLEAR TAPE BETWEEN THE AILERON AND WING REDUCE FLUTTER ENOUGH ? OR
SHOULD I DO BOTH. CUT THE TIP AND ADD TAPE.

OK RADCOM THAT WAS IT ! THE SCREW HAS A FLAT SURfACE TO IT ...

REGARDING THE AILERON,YES I SUGGEST YOU CUT IT, IT SHOULDNT BE THAT LONG. USE TAPE OR ULTRAKOTE / ORACOVER TO SEAL HINGE GAPS.

LAST, I HAVE READ VERY BAD THINGS ABOUT GORILLA LUE HERE ON RCU. THESE HUGE GLUE JOINTS WON T BRING STRENGTH. BETTER USE BALSA BLOCK ALONG SOME DROPS OF GLUE. I ALWAYS USE WHITE ALIPHATIC WOOD GLUE, LONGER TO DRY BUT ROCK SOLID. BUT THAT IS ABOUT PERSONAL HABITS.

ps : don't speak too LOUD, my girlfriend who is upstairs can even hear you !!
