Hello,
I have a Sig Somethin' Xtra that was built to be a fun fly/aerobatics plane but I've become obsessed with more speed. I have a radar gun and with a few minor mods I have hit 120 mph w/an OS 50SX and Macs muffler and 11 x 6 APc prop.
I really like the Patriots I've seen at the field but I'm told they are no longer made. I've also seen Patriot ARF's mentioned in the "speed" forum. Is there such a thing?
Thanks,
Mike

Mike....

....Tower Hobbies still has the new kits in stock....thet were
discontinued for a long time, and were brought back by
popular demand.

Look under Great Planes....airplane kits.....40 to .50 size.

Dave.

There are a couple good deals on ebay also. One includes all the hardware including retracts.

Yes sir- There "were" ARF Patriots years ago...

If you get ahold of one (Kit or arf-) strip that OS-50SX out of the SE and stick it in the Patriot! Then the fun begins-

120 with a Somethin' Extra? I didn't know those could go that fast with that fat wing- I have an Irvine-53 on mine and it flies slow... even sits still sometimes

I am glad you got bit by the speed bug cuz its' more fun with more people-

You might also look for a Direct Connection/Kangke F-20, Cermark F-20 (60 size) or a delta like a Whiplash if you want some speed-

Best of luck sir,
james

Loony, I am building a Dyna Jet to a set of prints I found on the web. I have everything made except for the tube. I just havn't quite decided how I want to form it and weld or if I want to spend fome money and have one spun.[sm=rolleyes.gif]

Did you see that thing fly!? That would be my club's worst nightmare. How did he get all those engines started at the same time?

Loony I think you have posted a pic of the ultimate Revver Brother! Cause I know he aint got no wife and his girlfreind and maybe parents and siblings have asked him to tone it down a bit!

Verry Cool!

No I never saw it fly I just found the pics surfing the net as for starting the engines i'm sure there is a lot of cursing, tuning, fueling.
This makes me think one brauner pulsejet is just not enough, time to start the lathe
and make two more.

How are you making the outer tube?

Dave, if this gets away from the context let me know and I will start a new thread.

A friend's dad had an old unknown pulse jet we found in his garage. We were only able to get it to pop, sputter, and shoot flames for just fractions of a second at a time. Never able to actually get it running. Are they typically this difficult to deal with?

A properly set up pulse jet will start in a matter of seconds...

Open fuel, turn on ignition, and give it some air with a blow gun or blower of some kind... it should start immediately.

The fact that it sputters or shoots flames may indicate that you are injecting way too much fuel to start it. Try setting the mixture a little leaner and see how it does then...
Or it could indicate that the pulse jet is just built completely wrong...

If regulating the amount of fuel doesn't help, try lengthening or shortening the tube an inch or 2, and then give it a try... this is sorta like setting up a tuned pipe (well, of course it is, because it is in fact a tuned pipe )

Even a badly sized pulse jet can be made to run if all the other parameters are right (fuel, air, adequate ignition source), albeit with very little thrust in comparison to the fuel comsumption...
It is just a matter of experimenting a little.

Try propane for the first runs, it ignites much easier... that means easier starting...

Have a roller that I use to make the combustion chamber, frustum cone and tailpipe. I just cut all parts to size then roll and weld. With the dyna the tube that is on the plan is in two halves which would be stamped then welded, very expensive way to make only a few.
By the sound of it you have a lathe and that is all you need to make one, thats if you haven't one already.

I have a lathe, mill, shear, brake, and a slip roll, I have a whole machine shop. My experience is in chip making not much with sheet metal. I did find a site where a guy made some spinning dies to make his tube but I don't have time to get that detailed yet. I was hoping you were going to come back with the mousse can idea. What does one of these cost from a regular manufacturer?

Cool vicman it's great to have a machine shop endless possibilities, just one drawback there is not enough time to make all our projects.

As for getting someone to manufacture the tubes i'm not sure but I will ask around.

I don't like mousse can pipes, they may work ok but just too ugly.

I work as a tech rep for a machine shop now, but I came up from being the "boy". I got all the equipment for myself a few years back when I was racing cars and motorcycles and used it for my stuff and made quite a few street rod billet goodies. But since I got into RC I am a full throttle RC geek and really don't care to make chips at home anymore, it robs me of build and repair time.

Here is a video of my WorldModels midget mustang .. its running a os 91fx with Macs tunned pipe, and a APC 12x11 prop. I was getting around 130 mph in this video, and think i can push 140 if i prop the plane better ...
