FYI
We are having a Swap Meet at Rabbit Dry Lake on Feb 9,2014.
Very Informal.
No fees.
Just come on out and open your tailgate - Burning Man Style. (except No Burning)
I'm sure you will find something you didn't know you needed.
And someone that wants your stuff more than you.

And . . . . You can still fly!

Default Pops

For those of you that knew my dad, he passed away peacefully this past Sunday. He actually asked for a beer, drank it then went to sleep...Flying model airplanes with my dad goes back as far as I can remember and he got a huge kick out of the Revver get togethers at Rabbit and El Mirage.

He always called the last flight of the day "a nice sundown ceremony"....I always loved that-

My life was spiralling and I have zero RC stuff these days but I think I want to get back into it, guess I need a 72 am radio and a Tristar trainer...Glow engines do still exist right? lol

I am back Vicman, but times are tough. The first thing I need to do is pay a couple people back from when things got crazy- can't seem to find them (they are inactive on here and no response to my emails). I do not have a single solitary RC part, no planes, engines, radio, etc.

Yeah, this is my first login to RCU in I can't remember how long. Razor, saw the post about Pops, he was a good one and loved you. I'm sure of it.

So why did I sign in?
Speed Rally of course. While I haven't been able to keep up with stuff like I used too, job, kids...you know. We are going to hold a rally this weekend September 20 at the Hunting Creek RC field in Wilkesboro, NC.
That is the home club of the guys who have come down the mountain and run the radar gun every year. They asked about hosting it this year and since I have been in the weeds I said "sure". Sadly I haven't been online enough lately to spread the speed word but it is what it is.
Any of you guys in the Carolinas who want to go fast and show off a bit, we are your kinda crowd.

Well I got off my butt and painted my "Super Shrike" today. It has been a year of hell working on 2 houses and 2 promotions at work. You know what a promotion is......that is when the boss asks you to take on 3 times the work for the same pay? Enough said.......I am back in the game and have been flying Giant scale for the summer but have always gotten more applause with a 40 size speed plane. The howl of 22K rpm is an real high to me.

P.S.......I got reprimanded and a warning on "feebay" tonight for being a dick head. I'm so depressed. (not )
" Inappropriate response to another member". I gotta learn to keep my true thoughts to myself.

MJD....the SD you sent me is on the board with a O.S. 65VRDF in the nose.
New Richardson rod and a porting job to the sleeve and crank.
Wanting to run a 8x10 CF and 30% on crank pressure with a short stack and custom venturi.
I will post picks soon.

Razor-RCU......sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. I have had the same lifelong relationship with my dad.
A lot has changed in the last 2 years since his stroke. Seems strange flying and when I go fishing the front
seat in my 14' boat is empty. I did not go fishing at all this year. I kinda feel guilty doing things without him
but I know he wants me to carry on regardless.

Look at what I just bought! PICCO 45 RIRE .......Yeeee Haaah!
You guys still alive? Why all the silence this summer. Time to chime in with some good gossip.

CBP...MJD...whats brewin' with you guys?

I went to the Caribbean twice this summer. Found some rum I really like and bought a case and had it shipped home.
Now I am helpless to my OCD buying of speed engines.

Best rum I ever bought. "Bambara" from Turks & Caicos. What a beautiful place...... and off the beaten path.

Nice score on the power plant SG!
Finding a drink you like is a wonderful thing isn't it?

Hey Speedy! Things are good with me. Spent a lot of the flying season racking up time in the Tiger Moth, including a kick-ass trip down to the Geneseo (NY) Air Show, and a fair amount of fiddly work on it before then. Full scale aircraft work eats up time like nothing I've ever dealt with before, crazy number of hours dicking around esp. on old a/c. And got in some soaring but not enough. Weather was so erratic this season that didn't help matters.

In the last 2 months or so I picked up again on model work. I recently converted my original SD to a Evolution NX.60 with Jett muffler. This engine is a small case .60 and cheap-ish, and after I watched it pull a fairly heavy .60 size Phoenix 7 vertical with very little effort, I thought it would be fun to check out with a 9-9 or so. Just signed off the Profi .061 racer again, ready to go, and the Profi .049 Boomerang is nigh unto test flight soon as I fix an aileron linkage problem. The .67 Demon is ready to fly as well.

In the last month I've been forcibly distracted by a different speed project. I've been "fast-tracking" it because there is maybe 3-4 weeks of viable weather left to fly: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/extr...l#post11873359 In fact, did a bench run of the engine today on the bleachers in the community center out our back gate, drew a few curious onlookers, some delighted and some horrified: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tIJ...ature=youtu.be

Funny about Turks and Caicos, maybe 4 days ago I was talking to someone who said the same thing, and recommended a specific area (memory does not serve but I wrote it down somewhere), and gave it high praise.

I finally went overboard on speed engines and stopped. For now. This winter's conversion project is to graft a 2.5cc Profi F2A speed engine to the nose of a 200 sq in F5D model. Buying that engine was a bit of an investment and I think has given me some form of feeling of closure to the addiction you speak of - it's the 2014 TOP version and there's not much crazier out there in terms of rpm or specific output. The other was a pair of NIB OPS DF RIRE .45's, real little jewels, and a small goodie box of .45 and .65/.67 venturis & speed spinners from Bill Hughes. I need no more engines, ever.

On that Demon, relocating the forward spar and adding a second short one just behind the intake is a way to make space for a Tettra tank on the CG. And you'll thank me if you add shear webs to the rear of the D-box. You'll figure it out.

What do you have for props for the .65? Around 9-10 should do the trick.

And lastly I have a cool little 1/2A speed model just needing final gear install and should be up real soon.

Well I posted these pics over on another forum but I am proud as a peacock of my new project. See the forum for SHRIKE reduced airfoil forum for details but here are pics of my latest speed project. Not my fastest endeavor but a hopefully comfortable speed of 150+ hoping for 170-180 mph on the down line in SLF.

Finish is silk and dope with Sherwin-Williams Polane urethane primer and paint.
That's right ....silk and dope! Fully massaged K/B 6.5cc Quickee.
Reduced airfoil, CF spars, and reduced fuselage, inboard ailerons. Aluminum heat shield under pipe.
Tettra bubbless tank, JR 5645 digitals with Spektrun AR7000 Rx on 6V. APC 8.5 x 7 trimmed to 8.25D x 7P
Lots of work in this projectile!

Revver 182 ( I think! )

Speedy, Very nice example. While I have done some nice silk and dope on models, I haven't used S&W Polane. Do you know if it can be had in flourecent orange?

S-W Polane B in custom mix will run you about $280 a gallon and that is without catalyst and reducer.
How many gallons do you need?
You need a commercial vendor's license to buy Polane.

$280 a gallon!!!
Dipping it in gold would be cheaper but it couldn't improve the looks at all.

Just think, if you were down here in NC, you would have had a perfect weekend to fly that little jewel.

Speedy, is it fuel proof..?
I'm always amazed to hear about paint over silk jobs that turn out light. I would pay someone to show me how...!

Yeh...and people think glow fuel is expensive! LMAO!

A friend of mine has a 2012 Z06 Corvette with front CF ground effects package and tapped a parking island with the nose.
Estimate for the new CF front lower air dam was $6K and just the paint was another $1600. Now that is insane!

When DuPont came out with their water based automotive paint I walked away. That stuff wont even resist bird droppings.

Polane is an industrial coating and not automotive. It is used in application for extreme harsh chemical environments and it is non-conductive so it is perfect for high voltage electrical enclosures in metal/steel foundries where there is a lot of corrosive VOC's in the environment. It is also well suited for robotic articulating arms in the same type industrial settings. It has an extremely high concentricity of pigment and full coverage is achieved with minimal paint.

Nitro will not touch it. Not even 50%. The only thing that will eat this stuff is an acetylene torch!
It is also impervious to acetone, MEK, and toluene.

I'm probably going to really let the cat out of the bag here but.....most consumer products are simply someone buying a name brand
product in bulk, repackaging it in smaller quantity, and putting their own label on it. They then jack up the price double or triple and make a profit.

Oldest trick in the book.
