Default What is the best TACH

Ok speed junkies!
What is the best tachometer out there for our hobby?
I want reasons why? Not just because you own one, it is the best!

I am using a hobbico, that looks like all of the other generic ones available.
It just does not seam accurate, it jumps around sometimes.....

many people would recommend the TNC for accuracy, has a better optical pick up in poor lighting and works at greater distance than other tach's( 6 feet I think off memory)..I guess a safety feature

I also forgot to mention, hence the edit, that there is a thread on tachometers in the glow engine forum and you might want to also check out the tachometer readings forum

allot of folks have good luck with the $20 cheap-o ones but myself i went through about 10 of them before i got a TNC, never looked back, it's by and far the best there is and worth every penny. the increased distance is very handy when taching my 1/4 scale, i can tach it while standing at the tail, it also tachs my Jett 60lx turning @ 21K from over a foot away with no problems, other tachs have a very hard time reading an 8" APC prop at those RPM unless you stick it right up to the back of the prop and some wont even then.

I just got a GloBee IntelliTach and like it so far it is 25 bucks and is better than those other cheaper ones. Make sure you are outside when you use it because it uses light sensors.

The best tach I have found is the MasterTach, built by Allen Booth, and sometimes available through www.pspec.com

It is an analog tach and runs close to $200

They have gauges for different rpms ranges, and are extremely accurate at higher rpms (I run them over 23,000 rpm, I believe the top gauge goes up to 30k)

Having an analog (sweeping) gauge is much more accurate to me than to see numbers jumping around on a digital display. These tachs are not for everyone, but I would say they are better than the TNC, and I have tried them both.

All optical tachs do.
