there is a guy at the field i fly at and he has a mach racer with OS 55 AX. i was told it runs about 140 mph. dont know if its true but if it is what can i do to make one fly faster than that.

Well I would have to see the 140 to believe it...Other than an engine upgrade, build yours lighter and take the landing gear off.

The airfoild is a bit thick on those things... Do you already have one or are you getting one?

For deltas I prefer the following:

Blue and Yellow one is an Oakdale Phenom, about $150 as I recall-

Red and Black one is an ACM Whiplash-X a bit harder to find since they are discontinued...again-

Both are superior to the Mach Racer structurally, aesthetically, and performance wise.

My patriot is faster I have to ask, what happend at the end of that video. That interests me more. Looks like the cameraman and the pilot got buzzed a bit too close.

Kamot is ritht on the money. Watched the vid, the ear says 14 to 14.5k rpm, no more. Yes the ear is that good (maby). What did you say? His comment of Jett 60LX is right on. Mine is just breaking in, and now turning a 8.8 X 8.75 very close to 20K on the ground via a TNC tack, and then unwinds in the air sweetly, scary fast, not fast, truly scary fast, above the typical Q=500 with Nelson etc. Engine worth every penny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The guy who owns that plane has a thread about the video in the Profile/Fun fly planes Forum. You were right, the guy flying lost the plane after another pilot nearly hit them with his electric.

Yeah you'll be hard pressed to beat the Jett. I've got a Jett FIRE 60LX in my DD turning an 8.8x9 APC Pylon prop @ 21K static and it runs the trap at 160+ mph, the airframe is the limit on speed here, not the engine I've also got allot of drag in my setup but it's the fastest thing at my field so I'll leave it as is till something comes along faster.

Oddly enough, I have not seen a Mach racer flying yet. Although my field time was a bit limited last year.

Glad to hear the engine is keeping you happy When the engine approach about 20.5K, move up in prop size.... try the 8.8x9 - pull it back down just below 20K to the mid 19K range on the ground.

KC..... you were asking about headers not long ago. Did you find what you were looking for ?

I never found a header that would work on the Patriot 40 without allot of butchering so i just re-covered the DD adding some super cover right under the color.

a cowl would no doubt help get the speed up a couple MPH, but a DD airframe isn't built for all out speed and the folks who claim 200+ MPH are only fooling themselves. it's not worth all the hassle to cowl and streamline it for the slight gain in speed that you'd hardly notice flying it. it's not going to give me 40 MPH over what i've got now so why bother?

EDIT: the folks who have taken the DD and thinned the airfoil and brought the wing tips down to a fine point and clipped the heck out of it, no longer have a DD, it's a Hybrid

You didn't cut any corners with the engine so why cut corners with what is hurting you most, drag. Maybe not 40 MPH but you may be surprised with a 15 or 20 MPH gain. You have an engine, fuel tank, antenna and servo arms in the breeze. I would say this combined area is worth at least two fingers sticking out. If you could drive your car 160 mph and stick two finger out the window you would probably agree there is at least 2 lbs of force. My unscientific approach says you are giving up over 25% of the engines thrust because of unnecessary drag. One of the first things you learn in pilot training is that when thrust and drag is equal you will not accelerate any further.

had i built the DD myself i most likely would have went to the extra effort to clean it up, but i traded a 1/8 scale Inferno for it with the intentions of putting the engine in my Patriot 40 (as noted by Bob about the headers). even if i went the extra mile to cowl it in and recess the servos i doubt a 40mph increase in speed, maybe 15 if you're lucky.

I quite agree, I was more just thinking about it. In some ways taking a minimalist structure like this and going to the trouble of a cowl makes no sense, in other ways why not. I'd be more tempted to go to the trouble with a Whiplash, seems more worth it. I have one pretty much ready to go and have been scratching my chin and thinking about a cowling.

Getting back to what the colum is about, I have been flying my mach racer for 2 years now with a JBA .56 engine & nelson pipe 9x8 prop, very fast and its just gas and go! $89.00 plus $79.95 for engine= great investment!

I just bought a mach racer and flew it for the first time this year and let me just say that it should not have been the first plane that I flew for the year. that thing is fast!!!!!!! Lucklily I did not crash it, but there was a couple of times that I thought that I was going to.

I bought mine last summer and put a 46ax with a macs muffler and was a blast, as I write this I just finished swapping the 46ax out for a new 55ax. The 46 with a 9x8 was easily 70+ mph. Our club field is visited by the state patrol often in the summer, having their lunch breaks watching the planes.. I will see what I can do to get a radar on it this year. For the price, fast build, it is a winner in my book.
