Red Bull air races fill the bill for me 
I read Pop Sci and Pop Mechanics monthly and this kind of stuff is always popping up. I feel so much of it is more hype than reality. The Pop Sci article was touting this as a future Nascar in the sky... Most people on the streets call ailerons flaps or worse yet, flappy thingies, so I'm not sure how it will become some 'Nascar' event. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see these rocket-racers but comparing it to Nascar (for potential popularity) is not realistic. I do think that Giant Scale racing should have a turbine-power category. Now there's an event people would show up to watch $15k bore a hole into the ground.
