Default How fast is fast?

Ok guys, are diamond dust or shrikes any fast than a q500 plane like a predator or a viper? With the same power plant of course. I can get about a 130mph out of my predator with a supertigre GS-45 with a 9x9 apc. Whatcha think?

I have flown all three with the same engine and it seems to me the Dust and Shrike are faster.

Me too and if they are it's not by much...

Mike, I don't know if you saw my other post but I got my little electric up at the sane time as my modded DD and the electric was faster... electrics are the future...

yes... sooo? Are you saying that we are not accurate in our statements? Mike and I have been flying these planes side by side for years....

It's just a general reminder. If you guys have been flying them side by side, I have nothing to say about it. all i'm saying is that if you want it to look fast, go small.. I have a 1/5 scale mustang that's doing about 125 on gas, and it doesn't really look that fast, on the other side a have a .15 texan with a jett 40 in it and it looks like its hauling a..., on paper though, they are probably hitting the same speed.

I understand what you're saying. The little electric is 40 some odd inches span and is doing 150+ level. Up against my DD which has been radar'ed at high 150's the electric out turns and accelarates away from the DD but once at speed the electric is almost the exact same top speed straight and level. I'm still working on getting the electric to fly smooth, it's too twitchy at speed.

The Combat is the Tower Great Planes Mustang, has a OS .32 on a Macs peace pipe and has been radar'ed over 125. The nice thing about it is I've had major crashes with it and it is very rugged and flies so nice...

Some speed...

The Dust may have a shorter wing span but more wing area at around 575 sq in. When I fly my Dust next to the Q-500 guys I pull away faster then when flying my Q-500.

... electrics are the future...
Electrics have come a long way in the last year or two. I am working on a new speed plane and thought about electric but the cost ended up just too high. For high performance it was going to cost me close to $1000 plus $500 for a spare battery plus charger and balance. That would buy a few Jetts. how do electric components hold up in a high speed crash? Losing a $500 battery would not be good.

Does anything hold up in a high speed crash? I have yet to destroy a motor speed controller or battery pack but to be honest I haven't had a really good high speed crash. I have broken some airframes and when you get only a couple of flights out of a carbon/ kevlar hollow moulded speed plane it hurts the wallet... The little red orange and yellow electric is 20 years old, started out as a slope glider, got a .061 on the nose a few years ago and was rebuilt into electric last winter. It's old school, wood fuse sheeted foam wing, thin low drag stuff, retains energy really well. It has a $100 off the shelf motor with standard off the shelf ESC and battery. The power system is about $250 or so total, not bad for the speed...

Evan,

How do like the Cheetah? I was thinking of getting one with the brushless/Lipo combo.
About how fast does it go?

Or I was thinking of some other small fast electric (like an electric pylon such as the Vixen)

Thanks,
Mark

Mark do not buy a Cheetah, I repeat.. do not buy a Cheetah, hello, to make sure you heard me ... do not buy a Cheetah.... I was ready to crush it while building it as nothing fits into it, well that's not exactly true a speed 400 like a Mega 16/15/X fits and you can squeeze a CC45 or smaller in but there's no room for a battery that is anything more than a 1200 2 cell. HS65s and a Berg micro stamp fit well... Anyway after the hassles of getting things in it the first toss was it's last, balanced as they said an experienced tosser that probably should have thought before tossing threw it and it did a kind of pin wheel spin before crashing and breaking 550 feet away. I was so pissed I never plan to fix it, I tore all the gear out and that's in the electric sloper. Works great in it... Anyway, a Mega 16/15/2 on 2 cells would probably work ok and give you 100+ but the thing is super hard to launch. I found this out after the fact talking to many people, all asked if I got it into the air like it was a real exclusive club to be in...

Asking how fast anything goes is relative to what it has for propulsion. A Mega 16/15/2 with a 3 cell 1500Lipo and a 4.1/4.1 cut to 3.7X4.1 gets me to 150. I also have a Mega 16/15/4 on a 5X5 and it's about 90. A 4 oz foam war bird on a 250 gets me to 50 but that's really moving for what it is. The Alpha ducted fans are good for 80 and are a blast to fly. Of course if you put this on a brick it won't go that fast but on a Stinger of any small pylon plane you'll get these speeds...

Get a Vixen (if you like some building) or a Sokol if you want a 'moldie' airframe. Both will test your finger dexterity installing gear if you've never played with the small 1/2A stuff or small pylon ships before.

My nemesis goes 200+ out of a dive. I think I spent about $900 on the whole setup using a 15 series neu motor on 5s lipo.

Here's a short video:

LOL... It's a pylon racer with a 50" wingspan. I went with the nemesis cause it had the biggest fuse. The motor barely fit and I needed to mount the servo's in the wing to make space for the 5s lipo pack. I'm almost positive it cost less than $1000, but I did get a good deal from soaringusa on the plane since it had some minor shipping dmg. It's a screamer. I need to wear earplugs when launch it.

All righty then! With a supertigre GS-45... what's the fastest airframe I can stuff it in? Seems the shrikes kits are pretty reasonable. Anything faster in that price range?

Thanks for the info on the electrics Evan, Troy, and Tick! Well appreciated. I'll stay away from the Cheetah. It looked really small anyway.

Basically, I want to get an ARF speed 400 pylon plane, throw in brushless/LiPos, and sport fly it fast and pull G's. No one at our club has anything like this. It must go vertical and must go 100+ (hoping for 150+)
I don't want to break the bank either.

I am new to electrics. [sm=72_72.gif]Any suggestions on:
Airframe (pylon speed 400 size)
Motor
Prop
Speed Control
Batteries - 2 cell?, 3 cell?, How many C?
Receiver
Servos

Thanks guys. Nice Video Tick!

Mark,

I would highly recommend the VIP with a 16/15/3 mega on 3s 2100 lipo. It is one of my favorite planes to fly. Does about 115 level, but looks much faster. You can go to 4s lipo for 150mph dives, but 3s is a great sport setup. I like the VIP because it is incredibly easy to build.

Another favorite of mine is the sunracer. I ran mine off a aveox 27/26/1.5 on 3s2p 4200 lipo. Does 150 but I had flutter issues when I tried to go faster.

I have video's of both planes here:

Thanks Tick!
I just watched most of your videos. Excellent!
I liked "zoom screeches" the best.

On the turbine video, I recognized the field. I've flown there twice before. The San Fernando Valley Flyers, Right?
[link]http://www.valleyflyers.com/default_flash.htm[/link]
I compete in the SAE Aero Design competition. I was there this past March.
[link]http://valleyflyers.com/gallery/SAE-Aero-Design-West-2007[/link]

Just a suggestion:[sm=50_50.gif]
I've used a radar run. It seems that I get a better reading when the gunman tracks the plane thru its flight path. Usually the best readings are when the plan is coming out of a turn or entering a turn and the plane's flight path is tangent to the radar gun.
I noticed that your gunman held the gun pretty much stationary and let the plane fly into its radar cone zone. On the gunmans defence, he was also video taping, so I think he had his hands full.
Anyway, just a suggestion.
