Im trying to get some racing going here at the home feild .Im thinking of going with th Q500 with a OS 25 Do you guys think we can get atleast 80 mph out of them? Why im going with this combo is we have alot of older guys that want to try this but anything over 80 to 90 mph might just be to fast for them ..Thanks for any info you can give me ..

Only problem with the smaller engine is that you will lose more in take-off. 40's with a lower pitch prop (10-5) would be better.

HighPlains is right on. A decent sport 40 is not going to be that fast in a Q-500 and still be fast enough to develop the needed skills. Carefull what you create there. One or two of the older guys may be hard to beat once they get the hang of it. In our club of 100 or so, there has been two dominate pilots over the past years or Both are well over 70, and just keep on kicking. They gotta slow down sometime? ENJOY

....25's aint goona cut it, no way. Go with the .45, 46. 47's like the Super Tigers, Magnums,
GMS engines, or the OS. You can buy these (excluding the OS) for $60-70 and have a blast.
with a choice of engines....all must remain bone stock) you can have some real
competition with prop, fuel and plug choice left open to individuallity.

Those Clubs that race the same planes, with the same engines, and the same props are
BORING. Anothing problem is the .40 sized sport engines have dried up to a great
extent. OS just discontinued their .40, which was popular for club racing. Magnum no longer
offers their .40 either, which was a good engine.

If you don't get the speeds up into the 110-120 range and get some knees banging together
it won't be very exciting.....if the racing is exciting, it will succeed.

We started a racing thing up in my area using the Sonic plane and the GMS .47 engines ($65.00)
but the group fell apart. []

If your talking the FX .25 and not the LA .25, you can get up close to 100 mph. We raced them up here on a shortened course in the late 90's. I had a blast with them, and they worked just fine (even off grass (as long as it wasn't too thick), and got me hooked on pylon.

I do think you are better off going with any of the sport .46 motors though, at least then your left with a useable motor if the class dissolves. Stick with the cheaper motors TT .46's, Magnums, I would personally tend to avoid the GMS or Tower motors, just because the muffler does add a little extra juice. Maybe allow them, but also allow the Tower mufflers on the other motors.

We race with the OS .46 AX and although it is a little bit spendy, they are all pretty even, and run great.

If you're looking for a "fun" class, check out the pylon forum for the "Club 40 Racing" thread. There are 2 airframes approved and use .46 sized engines for a cheap investment. It's anything but "boring" (sorry Dave). It's definitely not exciting as Q500 or QM, but it's a great way to get people involved with racing.

The SkyRaider w/ a TTPRO .46 will be in the mid 90 mph range, which is plenty slow for a 400' short course. The old guys will definitely be able to keep up with it, but it's still fast enough to have fun.

We have a series here in Central/South TX that's going great. We have anywhere from 20-40 pilots per race and have a blast.

Daven, what percent nitro are you running to get 100mph with your fx .25. I'm running a predator 2 with a gms .25 apc 9x6 on 10% cool power and it doesnt seem anywhere near that fast.

....I was refering to a class of racers around here that used AT6 planes, and Thunder
Tiger .46 engines....which are just mediocre engines....please....I can run faster than
that, and I'm 60 years old....

A 9-6 is too much prop for a .25 on a quickie airframe. An 8-5 or 8-6 will allow the engine to turn up better. Even so, most engines on most airframes will only get up to around 90 mph at sea level. We ran this class for beginners about 15 years ago in central California for two or three season, but finally threw in the towel because they were deemed too difficult to get off the ground when the wind conditions were not straight down the runway.

We ran 15% nitro fuel, nothing special. The props that were the fastest were the APC 7.8x6 and the old style master airscrew 8x6 (Not sure you can find these anymore, they had a wider blade).

Our rules had a 3 lbs weight limit (not 3 lbs 12 oz like today).

It took a very well built plane, and good motor to hit 100 mph. Most were in the low 90's.

Thanks for all the input guys .We are going to start with the os 25`s FX and go from there if it works out .If we can hit 80+ mph that would be fine .But what it will do is maybe lead to big and better thing (i hope) ..Thanks again
