Default Now This is Fasttttttttt

Hi Guy's

I thought some of U might get a kick out of this little beauty.

My Buddy has been trying to get me to Fly one of these things for several years now.

After seeing several friends enjoying themselves I decided to Join In.

The Plane is the Original Sunracer Powered by an HET 2w 20 motor. Flight Power 2170 3s1p 25C Pack. Castle Creation 80amp controller.
The Prop is an APC 5 * 5 and she turns around 35,000 RPM. If my stuff reads correctly that high.
Amperage is 65 Static.

Here is the Fun Part Straight and level the Airframe is limited to 165 and then the Flutter starts at the Ailerons tips.
The cure is to Tape the tips closed so the Ailerons only Warp. No more Flutter with Speeds now of 189mph if U can believe the Doppler Radar.

If you Guy's like Fast then this will get U going. The SMALL foot print with the High Speed only allows 2 to 3 second burst of MAX power.
One other Fun fact if U Fly down the Center of the Runway and go to Idle Power and pull vertical she can still climb to approx 1500 feet at IDLE.

While I don't get that Rushed feeling from Flying it I do enjoy it.

Thanks
Ian

When I was racing all kinds of Vehicles from Boats to Bikes to Planes there was always one overriding Question.

How Fast can U afford to go because Speed CosT.

Here is a breakdown.

This new Airframe I am told is just a trace slower and slightly stronger.

USD

Airframe $259

Motor KV is wrong on site HET2w 20 $70

Speed Controller Castle Creations 80amp $136

FltPower 2170 3s1P $77

Servos Futaba S3153 *2 $67

MPI Spinner 30mm * 3.2 $ 14.00

Total is $623 less Receiver

That's parts breakdown is below.

I have a Sunracer and absolutely loved it. It is all busted up now from some sort of RF interferance. I plan on getting another one going again someday. I took one out to a fun race at our club one day and lapped the field 5 times in 10 laps! Not only does this thing go fast , it loses hardly any speed in a turn.

Got one of those nearly ready to go. Mega 16-15-3 + 3S 2100 LiPo. Apparently good for 160. The claims of 160 mph are realistic, these things go like snot.

From what I have seen the Airframe Max speed unmodified is 165mph.

Flutter is very likely beyond that speed unless u Tape the Tips.

The 16 15 3 Mega might be good for 150s not sure U need large RPM to really get thing to crank to the upper speeds.

Either way your going to really like the way it Flys in the 150mph range it's very much a point and shoot Flying platform.

As you can see the new version accomodates 2 aileron servos. The biggest problem for me was getting it slow down enough to land properly. If you fly over grass it is no problem but I would try to set it in the dirt areas to the side of our runway and it was a little tricky.
Having 2 servos will allow you to mix in something to get the plane dirtier and allow you to slow it down some. I always wished I had 2 servos on the wing.

There is no doubt that the SunRacer will eat a serious amount of Airspace and Landing in the beginning can be a bit tricky.

I have only flown mine 3 times and my two other buddies twice.

Seems it more Jet like that U have to basically Fly it into the ground at idle of course.

The ability to use Spoilers on the new version will let U land her in tighter Flying Fields.

Let me know how she Fly's I am curious about the different Wing configeration.

Love it even though I may not be able to see it well enough to control the thing at 150 mph plus. Now, need to figure out how to get that baby scooting around the pylons at the 180's for 10 laps. Would really enjoy doing/seeing some of the smug faces drop a little at the electrics outrunning their go fasters that are not really that fast. ENJOY

Yup, I found out about taping the tips beforehand so I planned to do that. Sounded odd to me at first but makes sense now. Looking forward to flying something as fast as my Magnum but twice as hard to see! Nothing like a challenge eh?

The Sunracers are good bang for buck airframes. Though, you've discovered their limitations with glass wings.

Hi Ian!

What do you mean by this statement? Are you saying that after 2-3 seconds you won't be able to see the plane any longer? I've been flying a Stinger for a while and am unhappy with its lack of retention. I can run 6 - 10 seconds (if in a headwind) and is slows and drops pretty quickly. I've been deliberating getting the Sun Racer airframe and just moving my stuff over. (Mega 16/15/4 3S-2250) Sounds like a good move to me! I also Have a new 16/15/3 to drop in the new ship!

Thanks!

I loved my sunracers. I blew up my first 2 trying to go faster than 160. Even with the wingtips taped, it would flutter at the trailing edge of the wing near the root. Finally settled with a 150mph setup (aveox 27/26/1.5 on 3s2p tp 4200, 4.75x4.75 prop). Very fun setup with tons of runtime. Eventually, I wanted to go faster so I sold it and built a carbon nemesis which has proven to be rock solid at over 200mph, but I do miss my sunracer!

How funny Ben that you found this thread! I think you were the one that originated taping the ailerons down.

SO what are you flying these days?

Just the Nemesis???

Guy's

Finally had a day that I took just electric machines out to SRQ for Flying.

The Sunracer with the Taped Ailerons tips really did it's thing. She was ballistic no Radar Gun or Doppler sound charts just eye balling it she was very Fast.

Taping the tips closed stops the Flutter but she no longer will handle like I was used to and she Ate UP a serious amount of Sky on me.

I would say it was constantly Flying at visual limits to make those High Speed runs.

Tick do U have a link to ur new Carbon Nemesis????

Hi Ian,

I only have the one nemesis and I think they all came in carbon with kevlar fuses. I haven't flown it in a while though. Nice to see you are having fun with the sunracer. I really do miss mine alot.

Anyone have a Sunracer Super V2? I am working with someone building this model and we are puzzled by the aileron linkages. They are bent in such a way to suggest that they lock themsleves in place. The problem we are having is finding a way to assemble them that makes sense. The servos should be laying on their sides with the linkages hooked directly to the bellcranks. If anyone can post a picture of how their aileron linkages are installed I would greatly appreciate it!!
