2013 Carolina Speed Rally is a GO!
This year's Speed Rally will be held on June 22.
We should have a new and improved runway project completed in time for the best one yet. I have already begun to receive pilot prizes and the new sticker design is complete.
For the super fast guys out there I have 250 club stickers that I would love to give out if you can earn it.
Check it out on RCFlight Deck.
http://www.rcflightdeck.com/event_de...?event_id=2007
It would really be great if we could get some guys (or gals) to register a little early. I don't have any fees tied to it just a simple intent to come put your speed on.
A very special thanks again to John at Full Throttle Jets/Dalton Sportswear for supporting us every year!

Getting better every day!
We will be spreading rock for the new runway tomorrow morning and ordered the new geotextile material yesterday.
We have new event stickers in hand and excellent pilot hats on the way. It looks like we will have Hobbico on board again this year as well as some others.
Come blow up the gun and have a great day with other speed freaks on June 22!

RE: 2013 Carolina Speed Rally is a GO!
This hobby has a small, but loyal and dedicated group of speed enthusiasts. Yesterday the most dedicated speed enthusiasts made the trip to Hudson, NC for the Carolina Speed Rally. The weather was great this year. The flying was quick and the event was great. It had a little old school feel with the top three runs being posted by nitro powered planes. Top speed was 170.4 mph from a modified Weston Magnum powered by a Jett 50.
I did not take pictures , but I know some will be posted soon. If you like speed planes consider making the trip 2014. You will not be disappointed.

Good to know fire and smoke reigned supreme - all hail internal combustion. I guess a smoking ESC or flaming LiPO counts as fire and smoke, but the visceral appeal just ain't there.
The modified Magnum making 170 lends more credence to the general opinion that they top out at maybe 165 on hot .50's. What other changes? V-tail and..?

What kind of rules do you have, and where could I find them ?? I would like to do a speed contest in Alabama and would like to be on the same page with you guys.. I saw my Buddy Greg Doe in the picture, so I know it had to be fun !!!

Not many rules to worry about other than the standard safety stuff. The only serious one is about turbines cause they might melt the fabric runway.
We use a Stalker Pro radar gun. It has been baselined with another Stalker Pro as well as How Fast Pitot tube systems. All within an mph of each other.
This event isn't really a contest but a meeting place for hot rodders who like to have a day where we are all after the same thing... go as fast as you can.
Greg has made it out two years now and puts on a pretty good show. He topped 150 this year.
He also embraces the idea of this event. Check out his Nelson carb mod.
I can't say enough good things about John Dalton and Full Trottle Jets support for our event.
This year the pilots came home with an armload of pilot prizes thanks to him!
Check out WarWings.com and his little bottle buddy, They are super sweet.

Vic, I just got home late Monday night, but wanted to say thanks again for a great time, and thanks to all of your sponsors, especially Full Throttle Jets. Dave Phillips is considering doing a similar event in Alabama, so maybe we will have another outlet for our speed obsession. Greg

Vic,
George and I had a great time up there. It has been a pleasure to support the rally and I hope everyone got enough goodies. Of course, the object of supporting events is to hopefully gain support for the business so I am busy working on the resurrection of Full Throttle Jets and getting back to the original plan of gathering all things prop-jet and offering them to the masses. We welcome the small garage types with designs they are trying to promote to contact us and will do our best to accumulate as much as we can to offer as well as getting off of our tail and moving along with our own design. As with most, I didn't achieve all that I wanted at the rally but at least I came home with a better sticker than last time. I was quite tickled when George popped 71.9 on a well used War Wing delta. The website is actually [link]http://www.warwingdelta.com[/link] by the way. We are having a ball with them down here. I am looking forward to next year.
Greg,
If your friend Dave is considering an event in Alabama have him give us a shout. It couldn't hurt playing this game twice in one year.

RE: 2013 Carolina Speed Rally is a GO!
Hey Guys,
I have been very busy with a Pattern contest we flew this past weekend @ Mac Hodges field. We fly the old Classic Pattern airplanes with tuned pipes and retracts. Our airplanes are fast for 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 lb airplanes with 60+ " wing span,
We checked some of them with our Radar gun and got 145 to 147 mph !! I guess that would get us in the 125 mph club !! Anyway I would like to pick a date in the near future to do some of the speed stuff just like you guys have been doing. It seems we have some interest in our area as well. If any of you guys would like to do this. let me know and I'll make it happen. I'm also sure we could come up with some nice prizes from our local Hobby Distributor..

I don't know if the sheet will upload in a way you guys can read it but here goes.
I'll get it loaded into the club website with previous year's results and some pictures soon.
Sorry it has taken me a little while to get this up. This spring has worn me slap out and I needed a little breather from model airplane activity.
Dave, pm me and I can forward you all the templates and stuff we use to run the event if you are interested.

I sent a PM to Vic via RCG asking for info just now. From what I read it is being held but much lower key than the last one and they are doing some work to the field as well, He isn't running it this year due to time constraints.
As soon as I get any real info I'll post it here.

I got in touch with Vic and this is what he said:
About the rally, we are going to hold it later in the year at a different field. Two reasons, our field is a little messed up at the moment, and the club members are worn out. Understandably they just want to fly for a while and not have any looming projects.
Reason 2, pilot entry has been waning the last few years, we had less than 10 pilots last year and it just didn't work all that great for the effort put into it. I'm hoping by changing up the time a little we might get some of the regional pylon guys who aren't worried about tearing up a NATS plane. We are looking at the September time frame.
I will still be running it though.
