How fast can you fly?
I haven't really seen any speed planes or jets and from what ive read it seems like they can reach speeds of 200mph. (WOW). Just wondering first of all what engine do you need to reach these speed (just a normal 2 stroke or turbine and ducted fan)?
And what is the fastest speed youve ever reached with a rc plane?

all three should get you to 200 if you get the right ones in the right plane. apart from a 'NORMAL' 2 stroke
question is how fast can you go before standing in one spot dosn't let you see the plane long enough to make a turn to come back

DF jets have gone over 250mph - Turbine jets over 300mph......
How fast do you want to go ? Supersonic ? Im sure someone will do it sooner or later..........

NASA's RC toy. did Mach 1.6 if memory serves correct.
then again the Space shuttle can be radio controled and thats much quicker

why would nasa give there speed toy a scale outline. "canopy"
maybe it was a proto of a full scale. if it were for all out speed it would look more like a missle dont you think. RR

If all it was for is speed I'd be worried if NASA could only manage M1.6
its a research plane probably sommit to do with cannards and if might as well look real. cant you see the canopy is blue with a clear section at the front

now upon closer inspection, there is a real possibility that the canopy is blue with a clear spot. i should have used my 27" monitor instead of my desk top 17" damn. RR

I just took a look at NASA's website and did a search on "radio controlled"... sometimes I really think there are a bunch of edjucated kids with entirely too much time on their hands wasting your tax dollars like there's no tomorrow...
Some of it might actually be research...

i think that was the start point, makes it alot easier to bolt on any old wing and see what happens, kinda like the x-29 ( was that it? ) is just a Tigershark with forward swept wings.

160-170 w/ a BVM Maverick ducted fan w/ .91 engine.
180-190 Diamond Dust w/ Jett .50 and Quickie 500 muffler.

I'm a dry lake-bed flyer....that plane is about 7 feet long,
with the "silly tubes", and about 4 and 1/2 ft. wide.
It has a very large air-scoop....suggesting a large turbine.
If anyone has personally seen this "model" break the sound
barrier....I will help them eat it....on a sourdough roll, with
swiss, mustard and pickles....hold the mayo....

According to the NASA website the plane shown after landing on the lake-bed is quote "about one-half the size of a manned fighter aircraft"... I suspect that would make it a little longer then 7 feet...
The little clear window in the canopy bubble was for the camera by which the test pilot on the ground controlled the aircraft.
edit: After a little more searching I found this info about the plane: length 21.1 ft, span 15.2 ft, max reached speed about M 1.4...
The one shown in flight was used to study prolonged laminar flow by sucking air from the bondary layer through the wing skin...something already studied (in windtunnel experiments) shortly after WW2.

I wonder how
much that that project cost us.....

Would be cool though...taking such a plane to the field on a sunny sunday afternoon...is bound to turn some heads...

And I implore you to not sidetrack this thread with whether or not we went to the moon...I can't imagine how the discussion would turn out, but $5 will get you $10 it won't be about how fast model airplanes can fly.

I'd like see use a scope to see real footprints up there..
all that cash to spend makes a good movie and a good way to make the ruskies poor and unable to pose a threat. good ole #13 gave the people something to feel proud of just as they got bored of it.
either way there was nothing scientific about the project.
ps, i would have built a fast model plane with that money ( cough cough, good enough? )

Let's save the "moon thing" for another day...
....back to the plane "thing". Lemme say that this wouldn't
be the first time I ever got faked out by a photograph, and
secondly....I haven't called the bakery yet....
( that big roll might cost me a bundle) He He....
Allow me to "second guess" myself, if I may....and offer
this.....It looks to me that the plane is...
1- about maybe 9 feet long without the tubes
2- not very heavy....notice the tire marks in the dirt
3- not really intended for top speed, but rather slow
flight and stability. Canards for speed ? Notice the
dihedral in the canards...stability. See the Fowlers flaps
on the wings ? I say lift and stabiliy....certainly not speed
4- those wing tip dams, and the angle they are set at ?
Again....stability, not speed.
5- the angled rear stabs...stability....
6- certainly doesn't carry much fuel....
It appears to me to be about a 1/3 scale model of the one
hanging under the wing of the big plane.
Now if only I could have a peek at those wheels....If they
say Du-Bro on them....all bets are off....
