You need to be more specific !!!

Fastest R/C X-43A (air breathing scramjet).........Mach 9.6.............6,300+ mph
Fastest manned air breathing SR71 (BlackBird).....Mach 3................2,293 mph
Fasted manned plane X-15 (rocket)...................Mach 6.7.............4,520 mph

http://www.aviationtrivia.info/X43A-Scramjet.php
http://www.aviationtrivia.homestead.com/fastest.html
http://www.nasa.gov/missions/research/x43_gwr.html

the numbers on the X-43A maybe out of date.

As far as consumer grade RC stuff (not anything in the 7-8 figures military) the Fastest is a toss up between Dynamic Soaring gliders and absolutely minimalist Turbines that have no landing gear and are basically tons of horsepower on a the smallest and lightest possible flying wing. From what I understand these ultra streamlined turbines have been clocked in a straight line between two points in the mid 300's miles per hour. I have heard rumors of 400mph but have never seen any first hand evidence.

Because of the nature of dynamic soaring its impossible to clock the plane in a straight line between two points so we are limited to radar readings. Currently the fastest planes in the best conditions have basically pegged the resolution ability of consumer grade radar guns (Stocker Prospeed, Decathur CR1K.) The current record is 309mph but many passes have been made that look quite a bit faster but the gun simply won't read them.

For a video of fast dynamic soaring to give you an idea of what it looks like:

A man falling to Earth from outer space still has the DSS record covered by quite a bit.

I think the valid model speed records should allow gravity assisted unloading, but the speed needs to be maintained over a set horizontal distance. I like the Germans' format.

Otherwise we end up just talking about stuff that is in a free fall.

And the shuttle and space station are doing 17,240 mph, but I was
trying to limit my original response to planes in the atmosphere.

The X-43 is doing better than 1.5 miles per second. I wonder if they use EZ hinges on it?

Maybe it is hinged like a comp arf, an aileron roll would break glass for miles.

Hah well I think we should keep it to sustainable speeds longer than a few seconds, flyable at these speeds within a few seconds of take off, and very visable from the ground flown via conventional RC equipment. The entire package should be financially attainable by any joe shmo (even if he has eat top ramen for a few months to save up the pennys.) That rules out military hypersonic drones, and remote piloted stuff. Also dropping a lead sled with 7% thick wing and with a 90 ounce/square foot wing loading from 1500 feet doesn't count either.

I recently got into slope soaring. We've been going to a place called Jones pass. Some of the guys are almost pegging the radar gun now. I wasn't there to witness it--but one of the guys hit over 300MPH a few weeks ago.

These guys have been flying Jones pass for some time, but never had the right gliders to take full advantage of the air. Now that they have stepped up to the higher performance gliders, it's turning out to be one of the best spots in Colorado for DSing.

I will say this:
Anyone who thinks gliders are boring needs to go watch some dynamic soaring in person. I was hiding behind my truck when those guys were making passes in the 130-180MPH range. The thought of being impailed by one of those carbon fiber missles made me sick to my stomach. That was nothing though. They started punching into 200MPH and then 250MPH. It's positively SICK!! The airframes are screaching as they fly overhead. We all know what a CompArf sound like when it does a snap or ailerons roll--that screach they do. Well, a DS crunchy makes that screach all the time!! It's such a blast to watch.

I don't have that type of airframe. I just got a foam wing thats made by a local flyer. It's called a Bee. 80MPH tops if your good and the DS groove is right. I'm such a rookie to slope--I don't have the skills to even attempt DSing yet. It's just crazy!!

I do not have video, but you can go to that other Rc website with "Groups" in the name and go to the Soaring Forum and then Slope. Go into the Slope forum and look for the thread titled "Front Range Slopers" It's a huge thread -- 290+ pages.

In that thread--about a month ago you can start seeing pics of radar guns. I am wearing the red jacket with black hood and you can see a pic of my back as a couple planes are DSing the backside groove. I'm holding the radar gun. It ain't easy to stay on track with those missles when you're holding an 6lb radar gun at arms length and pooping your pants everytime they come overhead. [X(] I think that was about 140-150MPH. Pic credit goes to Jim.

This is NOT Jones pass in Colorado--but it gives you an idea of the intensity.

Listen for the screach.

Little too fast for this airframe: [X(]

Here ya go! Radar shots--thios is 2003. 230MPH BAH! childs play today. LOL
