RE: A NEW PATRIOT IS BORN!!!
Hi Mark,
I think your post was directed to me so I'll answer those questions:
The Quickie in my pictures belongs to a fellow named Dave Wall here in Abbotsford, BC, Canada. He approached me in early 2006 about painting his quickie. He was scheduled to fly in the Abbotsford Airshow that summer. As usually happens it didn't actually get to my shop until about 14 days before the airshow, and he needed it back with at least 4 days before the show to reassemble it, rebalance, and test fly it. As a result it didn't get finished to the standard that I'd have liked but it looked pretty good for a job done in approximately 9 days. It was all painted in PPG base/clear, originally it was white and a kind of off white, not really all that pleasing, so we sanded it down, primed the area's that needed priming, and sprayed a new white base, it was actually a Nissan color called Super White. Then I masked it all off for the graphics and airbrushing. In the end we added less than 30lbs weight which considering a total of 3 gallons of base and 2 gallons of clear being sprayed which after reducing and mixing comes out to almost 10 sprayable gallons of paint is pretty reasonable! Thankfully the quickie fit in my paint booth even though the wings don't come off, this is only because the fuse breaks in the middle. If you want more pictures of the painting process let me know, I took quite a few.
As for my patriot, I think the main reason I didn't really like it is simply that at the time it was probably a little ahead of my flying skill. I'd only been flying for a short time and I was only 12 or 13 at the time. I know that it had come out a little heavy, I covered it with solartex fabric, painted it with butyrate dope, and cleared it with Endura clear. I had little to no experience painting at that time being only 12 or 13 so I think I ended up putting more product on than I should have. I believe I only flew it once, I think it probably scared me more than anything so I ended up selling it. Guess that feeling just stuck with me over the years. It'd probably feel quite different to me now having been flying for another 18 years.

Nice mods there Mark 5. I don't know how the heck you got down to 8.5 lbs with those mods and glassed/painted. Mine was covered in monokote, stock build with OS 91 up front and it came out a tad over 10 lbs. I remember having to add several ozs of lead in tail to get it to balance. I think cutting off the nose 3/4" is good idea. But mine with os 91/jettstream muffler/apc 11x9 revs up to 13,500rpm slightly off peak on the ground. Probably unloads to 14K in the air. I gave a YS 60 to a friend to put in a patriot 40 size, wonder how fast that little beast will go...

RE: A NEW PATRIOT IS BORN!!!
Kmtranmd, The weight of my patriot may be off because the scale that I have is not very accurate. Also 8.5LBS is still a little on the heavy side for a 40 size patriot, but this does not seem to affect the flight preformance. Your OS91 is a very strong engine if it can spin an APC 11x9 at13,500. What size patriot do you have? It should be very fast with this combo..

RE: A NEW PATRIOT IS BORN!!!
Weight, Size (frontal area), is a couple of the negative points about the Patriot. When I built mine a few years ago I didn't realize it would turn out as heavy as it did or I would have gotten lighter wood and made some lightening modifications. The weight and size is a killer for speed, that is why other planes will fly faster than the Patriot. Planes like the Magnum is very similar in design to the patriot but much smaller and lighter making it much faster. I have both planes but my favorite is still the Patriot because it is a work horse. The Patriot can take a licking and keep coming back for more. It can even withstand minor crashes with minimal damage that can be repaired. I have several Patriot kits in the closet and when I build the next one I am going to lengthen the rear of the fuse and install a 90 size motor up front to overcome some of the weight and drag. I am also considering mechanical retracts for the next one also. I was surprized at how well the Patriot will knifedge and fly inverted overall just a great airplane.

Mine is the Patriot XL. I didn't realize yours is the little 40 size. I guess 10 lbs for the XL is not bad, I will stop accusing my buddy of putting 2x4's in the plane when he built it for me. I realize there is quite a bit of bashing on the OS 91 FX out there. But I own three of them and three Jett 90's too. I think the bashing has to do with quality inconsistency in the OS 91's. I have to say two out of three I have are strong and reliable. But the mid range on any of them is tough to adjust, especially running the Jettstream muffler upgrade. At the end of the day, airframe/weight makes much more difference. My Cermark latest version F16 is smaller and with the OS91/Jettstream muffler combo can outrun my earlier version/bigger Cermark F16 with Jett 90L on it.

No ,, in the link i posted there are only 2 KITS left,, this is rare because there is no arfs being sold anymore, much less the kits, , i bought the 90 size patriot from Tower hobbies,,, and the 40 size from Graves RC,.. this 90 size is my first kit i have ever built,, i have scratch built delta wings before, but never an actual plane,, it's pretty much easy since the parts are allready cut out for ya,.[sm=thumbs_up.gif]

LGM Graphix, thanks for sharing the pictures with us, once again exceptional work. Are you still in contact with the owner and if so, is he happy with the performance of the Quickie?

I don't see the point in spending the time and energy to build the smaller patriot and have to create parts for any damage later on when you can buy the bigger XL from Tower for same price and know you can always get parts for repair. Bigger is better in this case.

Vasek, I have to agree with you,the 60 size(bigger) Patriot is a diffrent airplane. They may look the same but that is where the similarity ends.If you look at both airplanes you will see the diffrence, even the airfoil is diffrent. The 60 size patriot is a good flying airplane, but if you want all out speed, then the smaller patriot is the ticket.

RE: A NEW PATRIOT IS BORN!!!
i can't remember a lot of it because i started the project when i was 16 and finished about 6 months ago. i would say keeping up with the rudder torq rod would be an awsome idea since i had to bend a pushrod to get my rudder hooked up. the other thing is be ready to deal with the tight engine mounting process. I installed a rossi 46 i bought off ebay brand new. it sounds bad a^& when i have it rolled on its back coming in for a high speed pass. can't remember the prop right off hand right now and haven't played with the speed to much since i don't have a way to clock it. would love to see how fast it will go. i put the tri gear mechanical retracts in the plane they work really well. I drilled holes on the side of where you install the engine so i can remove the rossi from the motor mount if needed. the plane really flys a lot better than i expected and slowed down a lot better than i expected. i'm hoping this spring that I will get a chance to fly it more. (although I'm sure we'll be busy during that time, oh well gotta work to play i guess)

brenthampton79, nice looking Patriot,it should be quite fast with the Rossi 46 and retracts. You are correct about the mechanical retracts,I had them in my first Patriot and had over 400 flights without any problems.

Hello,
Yeah, I see him from time to time, he loves his quickie, he noticed a slight difference in flying after it was painted, but it did add some weight of course, in that plane you notice weight no matter what. I think the airplane dry is only 400lbs or something like that. He loves the look of it and the looks he gets! One thing he did mention is before we painted it, it had hundreds of little turbulators or something on the lower wing, I forget what he called them, anyway, they came off for paint and he flew it a few times without them, he said they made a HUGE difference and there has been documented cases where if a quickie is flying without those on the wings and it starts raining you're almost guaranteed to crash, I don't know why, just what I've heard from a couple quickie owners.

RE: A NEW PATRIOT IS BORN!!!
Hello,LGM Graphix, That is true with all Q2 Quickies. If the canard got wet, or if bugs, dirt, grime on it,the lift would decrease to the point where the airplane became dangerous to fly.The problem was solved with the Q200 Quickie, which had a different canard. This canard had a leading edge that was more rounded and the airfoil was thicker, which resolved the problem of loosing lift and increased the top speed a little.

RE: A NEW PATRIOT IS BORN!!!
I have a question for the speed freaks out there.I have a YS60 spinning an APC 11x9 at12,700.The pipe is set at 16" from the glow plug to the widest part of the pipe.Is this ok or should I shorten the pipe?
