RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
I have both the Kelly and a Sundowner with YS 110
the sundowner is 4-5MPH faster and easier to land the the Kelly
But the Kelly looks waaaay cooler and if it had a wing similar to the Sundowner it would be faster as the fuselage is quite a bit more narrow...

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
I have a Sundowner 50 with a O.S 91FX and a Cermark Alleycat with Jett 90LX with Toni extensions. The Alleycat is faster hands down. Another member of my club has a SD50 with Jett 60. The alley cat is faster than his as well. I would say close to 140mph if not more.. It hasnt been radared, but the SD50 with Jet 60 was at radar's at 134..and the Allecat/Jett 90 setup is clearly visibly faster. I will admit that the Kelly F1 looks super nice...but I couldnt imagine getting any faster than the alleycat combo. Seems like cooling will also be a problem with the Kelly cowl...but....whatever you choose...enjoy and fly it to pieces. My $0.02.

I have a BME 44% gas engine laying around does any one know if that motor would fit the sundowner formula f-1 the 80 inch wing span thanks

Here's a few pics.

Different landing gear and wheel pants. I think this looks better. Pants are off of a H9 Funtana X 90-100 size. Orange is a perfect match!

On all of my "speedster" type planes I stick a gyro on the rudder for the maiden just to mitigate any wandering during take off. Just seems to make things a little easier.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
It's a Jett60. Haven't really gone full tilt yet as the motor is still fresh. Two tanks of fuel and three flights only so far. But she does look promising. Prop is a 9X8 but I'll be switching to a 9X9 as soon as she loosens up a bit more. According to the Jett site, this same combo with the timing modifications runs right around 130-135mph. Not sure what elevation that was done at. The Black Hills area is around 900-930 meters above sea level.
This thing will sure get small quick so it's running pretty dern fast. I'd say it's in the 110-120 range right now. Just guessing though.
Fun stuff.
We've got a fly in on new years day so I'll see if I can't get some numbers on her.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
Remember, RPM is your friend with the 60LX engine. Don't move up to a 9x9 quite that quickly.
Important that the engine hit a ground peak up over 17,000 rpm - 17.5K min is a good target.
Best speeds mike and dub got with the SD50 were when flying with 9x6 and 9x7 props.

Hi Bob,
That's good to know. I'll switch out to a 9X7 in the morning. The 9X8 peaked at about 15,500 if my memory serves me right. I ran another tank through it tonight. Still pretty tight, but it's getting better. I'll fly the piss out of it tomorrow and we'll see what she does on radar. My buddy is a copper and likes to come watch.
Any ideas on how long a tank of gas should last with this bugger. I don't remember what I bought from you guys. (Chad Dixon's order delivered early Nov.) My flights have been limited to about 5 minutes each.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
Couple questions...
If this 50 size plane, say, were to go 190 mph, what do you guys think would have to be done to the airframe/wings to make sure it does not start to disintigrate/come apart.
Is there any legal speed limits by AMA for prop planes?
Would it fly with an engine weight of 29 ounces?
What prop would I need (if the engine can turn happily at 12,000 rpm) to go this speed? Power is not a problem...just getting high rpm. How about a 12x12 at 12K?
Just curious. Any input would be great!

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
My SD with a Jett 60 has been gunned at 123mph. That's with a 9X8 prop so I'm still fiddling with the right one to use.
This is a neat plane, but it's a semi scale ARF so it should be treated for what it is. 190mph is a big hole in the sky and it takes serious power and serious aerodynamics to run in that league. I wish I was smart enough to say these are my words. I asked this same sort of question a while back to Jett Engineering. I'm merely repeating what they told me.
But if a guy insists. If it were me the wings would have to be completely redesigned. I have a 42% Kelly USRA Giant scale pylon racer and the wing on that is thinner than the little SD in places. The frontal area of the plane is quite large so that'll probably need to be addressed as well. The tail feathers are kinda bulky too. I'd look at profiling them a little better. I've put this plane into high G, Full rate/bank 180 degree turns at full throttle and the wings haven't been ripped off (yet) so I'm guessing it's a fairly strong airframe. The spar is aluminum. I'm betting you could find a carbon one someplace.
It'd be a lot of work, but a hoot at the same time I imagine. I'm betting a Jett 70-90 class of engine would work well since it's going to be all about RPM. Weight is obviously a factor too.
One change I did on mine was to use the Hangar 9 Funtana 90 wheel pants. They are longer/sleeker looking and the paint is a dead match to the orange on the plane. They look real nice.
Good luck with your quest.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
hi all,
wanted to get some opinions on engines... I maidened sunday with my trusty os 46ax, 10x7 prop with jettstream thru fuselage pipe setup.. might have had her set a bit rich but wasnt all that impressed with the speed... I dont have the money right now to get the final engine for this plane, the jett 60lx.. trying to keep the money flowing towards the heli right now. so... here's the question. will an OS 55ax have a noticeable boost in speed over the OS 46 ???? I know it wont be much but was hoping for somebody that has flown both engines on the plane to give me some feedback...
thanks,
david

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
10x7 is too large..... over-propped.
its not going to get on the muffler well...
9x7, 9x8 or a 10x6 largest.... You want to see 15,000 rpm or better on the ground.
One of the guys in my local club is running the OS46/jett setup...... moves nicely.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
I just got a Sundowner 50 and I am putting an OS 55AX in it to start with, hoping to put a Jett in it later.
It seems like Horizon is dropping this plane, it is always on back order and the threads about the plane seem to have fallen off. Are people still flying this plane for any length of time or has the interest in the plane dropped off or has the plane turned out to not be a keeper?

I think I might just be getting an alleycat as I cannot find this plane anywhere...always seems to be on backorder. How does the alleycat compare to this? I like that the alleycat is IMAA legal...
