RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
Is the CG from the manual a safe one to start with? I'll be putting an 55AX to SD and would like to know the correct balance point. Also I'll start with 12x6 just to get a grip of the plane, than I'll change into 11x7 and finally 10x8.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
I kept my CG just as the manual said.I am running the OS 55 with a jet stream muffler through the firewall. The CG worked well for me. I had one deadstick landing and she glides as good as can be expected considering wing area. I will tell you though that she comes in hot and likes to be landed with a little bit of throttle. Don't try to glide her down.

Thanks. While flying with 70 Surpass II I had this feeling the CG was way to front, because every time I put the throttle to idle the nose would immediately point down and the landings were really difficult. However she can be slowed down quite a lot for landings. I just need more practice.

Cut us some slack dude....This is a dead thread and not everyone checks there mail all the time..Depending on what engine you put in it will change the time alot. I put an os 55 with pitts muffler in mine..Took me 6 hours from start to finish. I have not flown it yet

Danke Russm, I still have one in a box and I have a subscription to this thread and see entries here off and on pretty steady, so I wanted to get some feedback.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
I built one with an AX 75 and slimline pitts, completely in the cowl. I have pics in another thread in the ARF section- I think.
I am looking at building another one with a Jett 60xl, I wonder if the Jett 76 would work the same way?? a clean install.
I am also looking at the new OS 95AX that just came out.

I am going to sale mine. If anyone is interested in the airframe only, give me a shout and we can talk. I like the plane (a lot) but like mostly giant scale planes. I have flown mine 3 times.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
Hello, what do you think of stepping the motor up to a power 60 with an 80amp esc and 2 3200mah 3s in a series with a 14-8 prop ? what kind of speed do you think you would get out of that setup ? Or do you think this setup would be to heavy? thanks

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
I had an eflite power 60, APC 12X14E,CC-HV85,EVO 6cell 4900 mah li-pobattery. It did 82MPH.
I put a Hacker Electric Turbine Series A50-12L outrunner with, APC 12X12E, CC-HV85 esc,2 TP 3 cellpro-power 5000MAH in series, on my SD 50 it clocked 118MPH, but let it get to slow on landing and tip stalled it-heavier setup.(around 7.2 pounds).
Hope this helps

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
I was at the field today and was trying different props on my Sundowner with 55AX (Jett Stream Muffler).
I got to a 11x6 APC and liked what I heard and saw. Tacked on ground at 14,000 and transition was very smooth.
I was unable to test fly this prop size, due to high wind conditions, but I hope to soon and will post radar readings as soon as I do.
Has anyone tried this same setup with 11x6 APC, and if so, were your results similar on RPM?

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
Numbers are right ...... sounds like you are good to go.
Be sure to launch about 500-700 rpm off of peak rpm - when it unloads in flight, it needs the extra fuel.

Want to hide your elevator linkages and go to a slick pull/pull rudder? That's what I did. Here's a few pics for ideas. The gyro isn't really needed. It's a safety thing I do on all my new planes with itty bitty rudders just to mitigate the thing going bezerk on the runway. It's gone now.
Anyways, enjoy.

So I picked one of these up yesterday. I have a Rossi .67 that generally loves an 11-8. I was thinking of trying a 10-9 or 10-10, but if this does not work I think the 11-8 should be fine. The plane looks very good. I am going to wait until THanksgiving to put it together. Should be fun.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
I almost have mine ready to fly now. I have a Rossi .67 long stroke engine installed and will be trying 10-9, 10-10 props. I want to get the RPM up around 18,000. The power band is in this range according to Rossi. This engine was very strong on my Kaos. Unlimited vertical really, so I am really looking forward to seeing what it will do on a smaller cleaner airframe.
All that is left now is to install the RX and cut and fit the cowl (the hardest part). I will have to butcher the cowl somewhat because my muffler is so big.
I am honestly thinking I can hit around 130 with this setup, but I really do not care to know exactly. I am sure it will be plenty fast enough.
I wonder if anyone else has installed a Rossi in one of these?
Also, what is the balance point? The instructions look wrong at 2.5" or something. It seems like it should be more around 3" or so.
