I enjoy all this bench racing. Sure wish I could travel to WI for the big race.
Maybe you fellas should come to MT. There is some beautiful scenery here, and no noise restrictions at our field either.
My Jett LX will turn a 10-6 APC around 17500 (now that it is broke in) at 3900 ft altitude.
I have tried a number of props in the 9 - 8.75 - 10 range, and the 10-6 is the best of the bunch.
I am going to try a 10-7 just to see, but the weather needs to dry up a little. Lots of rain in this country this spring.

If you think a 10-6 is good, to bad your .56 cannot spin a 10-8.

Should be interesting.
As my pylon racing son, AJ, says "Bring it on".

i really wanted to stay out of this as arguing with people who don't have a clue is pointless.
1st of all Dave the little sport motor you have is tapped out at the rpm you are hitting. will the 56LX spin a 10x8?....of course it will, and it will spank the little sport motor you own quite easily........but why would we want to?.............it's proven that a 9x8 spinning 18K will bring a speed plane (that is what this forum is about right?) into the speeds we are shooting for and will run away from a plane powered by a sport motor turning a 10x8 at 15K.
2nd, this is the speed prop forum, why are you going on and on about pylon racing?................time to move on, post in the pylon forum where i'm sure you might learn a thing or two.
3rd, you are probably a nice fella, but you will not compete succsefully with your little sport motor against a Jett racing engine, so get over it. thing is, if you were to try and run that little motor at the rpm's we're hitting, you'd better be prepared to buy a few rods, and most likely cranks. it won't survive the high rpm's that a Jett is capable of, and it's rpm's that will get you into the higher speeds.
SPEED, that's what we are discussing in this forum............not turns.

Has anyone ever tried an APC 9-10 turning in the HIGH 15's on anything for speed? It was reported by another member that he was seeing 15,700-15,800 with peaks of over 16,000 with the EVO .60NX and Jett combo on a 9x10. Here are some numbers from Jett as far as recommended props and there RPMS's on His EVO .60NX test engine. The actual RPM for the 9x10 appears to be in between the 10-7 and 10-8 that Dubb tested. I went ahead and ordered one to try it out for the heck of it.
Copied from SR's post:
Dubb sent this to me regarding the Jett Stream muffler on the 60NX and I thought I would pass it on.
APC Prop Stock Jett RECOMMENDED
10 x 6 15300 16800 YES
10 X 7 14600 16300 YES
10 X 8 13600 15500 YES
10 X 9 12900 14900 NO*
11 X 6 13600 15500 YES

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
I'm going to put retracts on mine...need a little more speed. There is no room left in the fuse.
Anyone ever do this yet? Would the 10-15 retracts work well from horizon?
I do not mind the extra bit of weight as I'm only going for top speed.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
I'll give one last shot to some F1 type wheels and very thin wheel pants...but would really like to get the retracts on it...the only drawback for me is that it will take some time.
I guess I'll be happy when it gets to 170 or higher. I know it will take the tuned pipe to do it though.

It has been done in real life with planes that normally had fixed gear.

oh, i thought we were talking about the "mid-wing" sundowner............but if you say so

If you REALLY want retracts, you could probably use something similar to the mains on an F-18, or F-104...the type that swing fwd. or rearward, and end up flush w/ the fuselage. You'd need to cut and fabricate wheel wells of course, and make doors, etc. etc. but the weight added would be substantial, and I don't think it'd be worth it.
The 10-15 size e-flite gear are designed for an aircraft less than half the wt. of the SD 50 ... and combined with the length of the struts that would be required...no way...definitely would not work IMO.
I would try the more streamlined / thinner wheels and pants and probably settle for that.
If you want to go faster, try a different airplane....unless you're just trying to see how fast you can get a Sundowner 50 to go!?
BTW...putting one of your own 30cc gas engines in one is pretty cool in itself![8D] You've got a great looking engine that seems to perform quite well, according to what I've read.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
Thanks..that is what I was worried about...the complexity of it all and the weight.
Thanks! I have the Sundowner and would like to make a super sleeper...lol
Eventually, I think I'll make a flying wing...but for now...I would like to see how quick the Sundowner can go!

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
Earl,
got to maiden the Sundowner/Jett 56LX today
i went with a 9x7 to start with as i wanted to give the engine a bit more breakin time.
peaked at 18,500, backed it down to 16,800............there were a few naysayers about the prop diameter, but the 20 foot rollout to get airborne quickly changed that opinion.
once it came on in the air it was on, and i mean on for the whole flight. this friggin animal doesn't care where it's pointed.
definately as fast as what was expected.
will be trying a few different props once i get a gallon or so thru it.
the Sundowner itself really suprised me........2 clicks of up elevator and it was straight as an arrow.
everything Dub claimed about this setup is true to the point.
pattern flying is accomplished very easily. very stable airplane.
landing was much easier than i anticipated.
put another way, the master of speed at our field was aking a lot of questions..........cuz he no longer is the master

Good goin summerwind!
Aren't those engines rockin', love my 60LX, in my f-20, I ran mine with a 9x7 for the first little while also, now I'm using a 9x8 (still rich a little though) and it scoots and never quits on me, very reliable engine.

yep guys, the Sundowner is an outrageous flyer.
the Jett is running on the dirty rich side and still smokes anything in it's class.
my buddy wants me to clip the wing

Good to hear the first flight went good. I started with a 9-8 APC, @ around 2,000 off peak, for my first flights which also worked out pretty good for break in. I have about 2 gallons through it now.
I agree - it is surprising how good it performs that rich!! I still back the thing off around 800 - anything less and it takes the plug.
The SD is an impressive plane - especially with the awesome Jett .56
Let me know how your prop testing goes. I have tried a number of sport and pylon props, and have came back to the old 10-6 APC prop.
You will enjoy this one.

Worth experimenting with a number of props.
If you have an opportunity, try a few of the Vess wood props too. His 10x6, and the 9" props are actually quite impressive.
Just make sure the rpm stays up, and the engine will be happy.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
the engine/plane combo impressed even our hardest to impress member last sunday.
the smoke trail is the only thing i have to go by to tell me just how fast this thing is flying.............you know, when you do a loop, run down the runway, do an immelman and then fly right back thru the smoke trail you just did with the loop cuz it's still there.
too bad Vess doesn't make a 9x8
another member gave me an APC D2 9.5x7 to try, but i have done it yet.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
Regarding the wheel pants discussion.
If you look up the old H9 Funtana 90 the wheel pants were made for this plane! Same orange color and much slimmer/sexier looking.
It's a killer upgrade/alteration.
I'm on my 3rd SD50. Last two met their unfortunate demise. Love the plane. I have a Jett60lx for it.
Good luck.

It will be interesting how it works for you at lower altitude.
