Default Please help me choose a plane

Hi, I mainly fly gas (50cc and 100cc) aerobatic aircraft and glow helicopters. I'm missing a high speed prop plane in my hanger. I have a OS 1.20 2c and all the radio equipment, just need to find a airframe. I know I'm not working with the best of engines for a go fast plane but it's what I have so I might as well use it to get my feet wet! I fiqure small prop and big pitch should help the lack of RPM's. The 2 planes I really like are the Cermark F-18 and the Cermark Alley Cat. The GP Minnow is nice and I love GP stuff. The Kelly looks good but I've had bad luck with Kyosho ARF's several years ago. Any comments are appriciated. Thanks and Happy New Year!!

At 10,000 rpm an OS 1.20 is pretty impressive, but it still sounds like there could be alot more. I wonder if any diehard 4 stroke users have hot rodded one?

GP Minnow, I love that plane, shoot I want one. a friend has the Little Toni, and its pretty quick with a saito 125, so a minno with a 120 2c it should scream.

Combatpigg, the first thing we'll need to hotrod a 4c it someone to grind us different cams. After that who knows what'll happen!!!

I would start by changing the valve springs to something stiffer, much stiffer..

I never thought much about it until reading this guy's plan to build a speed plane around the OS 1.20. There might be oil control issues that are holding this engine back, plus getting a hotter cam might be a $2000 proposition to have custom made? I wonder what it would cost OS to spit out a hotter cam, $5 worth of reprogramming?

The racing valve springs are no problem, just break open a couple of ball point pens

Combatpigg, Why do you keep commenting on my engine as a 4 stroke. It is a OS 1.20 2 STROKE. Go back and read the first post. Thanks for the help, just want to make sure everyone understands it's a 2 stroke.

Oooops. Sure sign of getting old. A 1.20 two stroke for a speed plane.......just build a big delta with a cowled engine and call it a day. [8D]

Naw..... Thanks for trying to help me out. I know the 1.20 2c won't be a beast but just trying to find a good Go Fast ARF to get in the air and try out this speed stuff.

The GP Toni is a good choice.... (it is quicker than the Minnow is, but just a by a little bit)

Should perform well with the OS120 up front. The plane is big enough up front to comfortably fit the engine. Muffler install may take a little work.

You will have to play with prop selection to get the best speed out of it. Probably a 13x10 would be a good place to start. Try and target around 11,000 rpm.

Nice thing with the 2C is you do not have an "max RPM" issue to deal with. You just have to prop to where the engine/airframe/prop combination performs best.

I love the looks of the Kyosho Kelly, seems to hold up great from what I am reading I have one in the box in the basement, trying to figure out the best engine for this guy, the only issue seems to be the cg in the manual is set too far forward... But as mentioned, the Toni is a tried and true model.

You will not want an OS120 on the front of the Kelley. It is a "46" size plane. Nice plane.... flys great with just a good 50 4-c ---- moves with the jett 60L in it..... but there are better uses for the OS120 power, expecially since it is not any sort of high-rpm engine.

I don't know, I saw a Kelly with a YS1.10 in it and it was very impressive. My YS 1.10 turns a 13x10 at 11,000 so if the OS 1.20 can do the same it should move a long very well.

Blessings, Terry

But it will weigh alot with that 120 and balance weight. Weight+Racing Airframe=SNAPY AIRPLAE!
