I have a Shrike 10 size kit on the way,
i'm looking to put a 25 on it
shipped from tower hobbies this morning
can someone point me to some good building hints on
what i need to do and not to do on this plane
seems to be a pretty popular plane.
I have been flying a sig wonder all year so i believe the
10 size shrike will be about the same.

Bob-
The Shrike will actually be more different than the Wonder than you expect. It has a thinner wing, and it's swept back...more speed. What engine are you planning on installing? I had a 25 FP on my first Shrike...it was fast. Then I added a rocket boost, and it was FAST, until I the wing separated in mid-air. So I built another with a MVVS 28 (GREAT engine!) and a rocket, and it was REALLY FAST. That one went in full throttle straight down; the elevator servo wasn't strong enough to pull it out.

As for building tips- It goes together really well. On my 2nd Shrike, I used spruce for the spars and LE to keep the wing from tearing off. One thing all Shrike's should have done is sheet the back part of the plane, between the fins. The plans have these open, and I don't think they would hold up very well to excessive speed without sheeting. Add tri-stock to the top and bottom joint of the fins too..you don't want one of those flying off. I moved the servos back from where the plans say to help balance the big engine up front. I think that's about all I changed...it was a few years ago I did this...now I'm playing with Diamond Dusts. Just build everything straight and true, and you will have a really fun plane.

I may start out with a os 15fp i have laying here before
going with the webra 32, i have a 15fp on my wonder
and its plenty fast for that plane.
I also have been getting some stick time with a DDust
I put an la46 wit a 10x6 prop last sunday
held it wot launched it by myself by holding it between the rear
fins about 30degree angle and just let it go.
it was several hundred feet up before i got to pull the throttle back a bit.
last DDust i had went in about 140mph nose first.

I have had, and flown a couple of Shrikes . 10 and 40 size
Carl is right about sheeting the Stab area and the tri stock
on the fins. A fast quick aircraft even with a .10 on it
The fuselage is big enough to hold a large fuel tank ( one
that holds more fuel than I have adrenaline) remember you don't have to fill it all the way up.
Be sure to set it up with either Dual rate or expo.!
It will slow down some but need a lot of landing space.

4 of us built shrikes with MDS.28 10/5 props
2 of them shed wings in flight
I also built a .40 size with .48 Mds wow this one lost the top left wing monokote in a high screaming pass made for an interresting landing.
do sheet the back end and do not overpower to badly but like I say U ain't never have too much fun or power

try putting a .91 vfdf in a 40 shrike,,,I have and it works very well

I have had 4 .10 size Shrikes now. I currently have one with a .25fp and one with a .32sx. Some of the mods are, moved firewall 1/4" back, battery all the way to the back, beef up the wing,fully sheeted the wing, solid balsa sheet to fill in the area by the fins. Make sure you have dual rates set-up for the elevator. You will need as much elevator as you can get when landing. So far the one with the .32 has been the best. It is now boring to fly the other one now.

What was your average building time.?
by looking at the downloaded build book it looks 10 -15 hours.?

Bob,
I would say you could have it framed up in 2-3 nights. The worst part is sanding the nose. The wing building is a little different. You build it on the plane. MIne with the .25 has no wing mods, and has about 200 flights on it. I would recommend beefing up the wing a little. Here is a link to one of my Shrikes. i bought a 1/2 shrike from tower hobbies last month and put an AP 0.06 in it. it took me 2 weeks of evenings to build and cover it and it is like a rocket. I would recommend this model to anyone after a small butt clench plane. Flight times of 5 mins on a 1oz tank and on idle it will almost soar. Landings are easy and i am thinking of putting rudder on it for vertical take off.

Well i had hoped to have the kit by now
tower shipped it out on the 30th its been sitting
in Knoxville since the 2nd tower is running a trace on it
today, ups does not know where its at, there web site says
it was scanned at 12:39pm on jan 2nd but they cant find it.
I alway have bad luck it seems everytime i deal with tower but its
never there fault. ups always hoses it up.
gonna give them the benifit because of all the recent holidays.

And here I thought that Tower/UPS only took forever to deliver to Alaska. I have learned that If you are willing to put up with UPS delays and Tower's willingness to not step on UPS. you stuff will show up eventually. The shrike is a fun, very fast, wet your pants airplane. After you have flown it , let some one else try it. Its worth the cost of the Kit to watch them.

but then i'd only have to wait another month for another kit.
talked to tower yesterday
they said they had to give ups 8 days for the trace,
I told them to just credit my CC back
they said they would refill the order and ship it out by monday
I aggreed
I also talked to ups the package had an invalid delivery address
just the street # and not the name of the street
I told them the correct address they said they had to get that info from the shipper not me.

What did you make the Ailiron rods with?
I'm refering to the rods that have a few bends
one end goes into the ailron itself to work the ailiron
this is the first kit i have had that didnt include that part
of the hardware.?

As I remember, torque rods came with my kit. If your are missing you'll have to either purchase some ( Dubro # 101 or Omni Models # DUBQ1400) or make your own from 3/32 piano / music wire and 1/8" brass tubing.

should have been 101.
well guess i'll cal them tomarrow.
took me almost a month to get the kit
i started it yesterday morning and cant go any further
i could have had it done yesterday if not for tower.

the 10 size, i bought a os 20fp yesterday
i'm putting on it for now.
i've had so much problems from tower lately i hate to have to wait
on them again,may try my lhs even though it is 45 miles away.
probably would be worth the drive.
