I've got an OS46 AX that a buddy wants to give me a few bucks for. I figured rather than selling it I'd see if there was something fun to drop it into and see triple digits??? Any suggestions on maybe a good .25 size candidate ARF? Not real interested in any delta style flying wings...any other suggestions?

Bolt on an ultra-thrust muffler and then put it on a Viper 500 - you'll easily see over 100 mph.

Daven's group is breaking 120 mph with a stock 46 AX on Q-500 airframes.

Yep, 120-130 mph with a stock OS .46ax and Q500 airframe. I've haven't tested a Viper thoroughly, but have plenty of data on my Seeker.

I can do short course (475 foot) level flight and hit 125 in the straights and not less than 110 in the hard turns with an APC 10x7 sport prop turning 14,400 (peak) on the ground. You can get speeds closer to 130 with the APC 9 1/2" x 8 N, but you can drop to 105 in the turns. Its hit or miss on what is the best all around prop. most days the 9 1/2" props are best, but others the 10x7 will win if it gets off to a good first lap.

However, I've never backed my speeds up with doppler

Speeds measured with stalker pro radar, more times than I can count. If you want to see speed in the US, come to the grassfield on Saturdays in the summer, you will see it all (except F3D's) too loud for our field.

Thanks for the replies guys. Sounds like a tuned pipe would give some extra fun factor. What type of mph change would one expect from a tuned pipe vs. the stock muffler on the same plane?

Any other ARF airframes come to mind other than the Q-pylon style? Not much time for me to build over the next few months....[]

Well,
The little weston magnum is pretty fast.... LR-1 if you can find one (.46 is a little big but it will fit) but a q-500 is the hot ticket. I like the predator more than the viper. I've had both and the predator suits my needs a little better.... Beside's if it isn't fast enough... just start cutting the wing down.

John, I'm a little confused. A pipe isn't going to make you fly any faster after you deadstick.

I'm with Mike, Dave and others.... keep it simple

stick the engine on a Q-500 airframe.... Viper, or any other one ...... just use the stock muffler, or for a bit more speed add a jett-stream muffler or ultra-thrust muffler. Use the props Dave recommended...... and you have easyyyyyyyyyyy tripple digit speeds. Plus the airplane flys on rails, has landing gear, and take-off and landing are a breeze.

The Magnum is fun. Same engine and tuned muffler combination. 9x8 or 9x9 prop.
But it does not have landing gear. Hand launch. But its fun !
You have to order from the Weston UK website.

Just an idea, the Sig Kobra kit, but you did say ARF. I just dropped an AX in this plane. Not as fast as mentioned above but in the 100's. Easy build

what does a pipe have to do with a deadstick? i bought a piped .46 ax off #bay for $75 and it howls and idles very reliably. i like this idea of dropping it in a viper.

I fly with CaptainDeadstik and gave him the moniker. Upon his return to glow, of his first 13 landings, 11 were dead sticks. We're both glider pilots and he lands better with the power off...

Anyway, as usual this idea of putting a pipe on his .46 AX originated when I offered to buy it from him (see post 1) and made the mistake of telling him what I was going to do with. He immediately took the engine off the market and posted this thread. [X(]

Long story short, I'm also following this thread with great interest. I like the idea of the ultra thrust mufflers - certainly more elegant than a pipe, and less fiddling. For a guy who flys R/C, I really hate fiddling. It kept me away from glow planes for about 21 years...

Do people like the Viper or the Lanier Predator? Is there anything else out there that's a higher quality Q500 ARF? The Viper and Predator just scream "chintzy" when I look at 'em, and the MA review of the Viper confirms that impression.

Not a lot of middle ground with quickies unless you want to build a kit that comes with a composite wing. The shotgun and slingshot are probably the cheapest full arfs. You can see them at www.bigbruceracing.com

A little more than the standard sport flyer needs, but very nice planes. (full composite)

The current OS sport engines are just going to run so fast and you have to live with it. They will pull a pylon type plane over 100 but just won't let go and scream. Tuned pipes help some but you can only look for 1000 more rpm. To get to the 18,000+rpm range you are going to have to let go of some cash.

I don't know about you, but I'm pretty close to ordering the Napier. I'll power with a Thunder Tiger Pro 40, only because that seems to be the ticket for sport performance. Pspec makes an ultra thrust muffler for that engine as well. I've got a color scheme picked out too - just need some time to build it. Does anyone know if the OS 46 AX will fit in that slender nose?

Sport QM can be a lot of fun

Just run a standard 9x6 prop on the engine/muffler combination. I am 95% sure Matneys napier landing gear will give you pleanty of prop clearance.

I put an AX in a shrike 40 done as a tail dragger with closely panted wheels. Was a hoot til the motor started coming undone. Turned up some pretty interesting speed. You just need to keep some good pitch on the prop. But the motor is not meant for that regime. Use it in something it works better with and get a Rossi or something for speed. Just cause ya got it doesn't mean its a good solution to going fast.
