Default Poll Jett or Ultra thrust for AX46

What muffler provides the best performance for an OS AX46 Jett or Ultra Thrust, Their only 10 bucks apart. Anyone test these two.

Pick the one that you like the color of, performance is a non issue.

... yeah, pretty much. Pick a color - or pick who you want to order it from.

Its the same technology, and the same tuning points for rpm.

Key to either muffler is to prop the engine so it runs in the rpm band the muffler is designed for.

I kinda like the red and gold colored mufflers myself

PSP does offer a few more "varients" of their muffler geared toward certain engines and lower rpm ranges.

For the 46AX, the jett-stream TT46 version works just fine.
Prop it so the engine turns around 16,000-16,500 peak ground rpm, back off 500-600 rpm from that for flight.
Higher rpm does not work better with that engine.

Thanks Bob-Reds good! I'm currently getting 15,9-16K ground with a Mac's tuned Muffler, this was a check last fall-cold air. I don't know if it will turn the same this summer. 9x7.5 APC prop. I was just hoping to get a little more. Thanks again for you reply.

The black muffler MAC's sells is not a tuned muffler. Its a light weight, low loss muffler. But it is not inherantly tuned.

You will get a lot more. Normally you would experience a 1200-1500 rpm gain bolting on the jett muffler (or the UT for that matter) switching from a stock muffler - with the prop size you noted.

That prop will be a little light for the tuned muffler. The engine likes to run right about that rpm with or without a tuned muffler. You will probably want to go up in prop size a little.

Weight was a big factor in using the Mac over standard. I put the OS in a little Sig Kobra, so nose weight and prop size-9" Max became a factor. I didn't get to experiment alot with props because the season ended. I didn't know the OS needs to be around 16K, so this gives me a small problem if I want to get a little more out of this set-up. Nice to hear the Jett Muffler will give me a nice bump, but I'm wrestling the prop height and weight issue.
Thanks again for your thoughts.

A 9x7 APC prop should work well with that combo.

Frenchie,
I think that Bob was saying to go up on the pitch of the prop, not the diameter. The 9 inch props are fine, just move the pitch up to 8 or 9 pitch to load the engine and absorb the extra rpm's you will get. I am not sure on the sport prop pitches, but the pylon props at 8.75" and 8.8" diameter come in pitches from 7 thru 9.5. Look at the selection APC offers and you will find a lot of props there.

Hope that helped some

Frenchie:

Go with the Jett Stream if only for the fuel nipple being tapped in rather than part of the casting. Casting is a little hard to run the fuel line over, the Jett uses a standard type nipple. Yea, I'm picky, but when your on the line getting reqdy for a race in 30 seconds, its good to have things work with ease and correctly. Happens when you are flying more than one class and one heat follows the next, CD is not going to give you a lot of play time. Just not good having another person screaming "Why can't you just get it up like everyone else".

Depending on operating range and if you take the time to tune the pipe properly you can normally get 300 to 700 rpm more than a tuned muffler (Ultra Thrust or Jett).

allot of guys in my club run the 15 dollar tower muffler for the OS engines they report 900 more rpm over the stock one. its not 1500+ of the others but pretty darn cheap. it looks like a small jett muffler. Just something to look at for some people just looking for alittle extra.

the tower mufler did actualy give us an extra 400 rpm on the 46 ax.
The nelson tuned racing exhaust gave us 2000 more RPM which seems to be higher than what people have been saying??????
