Best engine .45-53?
These are always fun! I will be building a Matney models Zoomer. I have the 12% tapered wing coming so it should be pretty clean and fast.
I will be building this for some club racing with essentially no rules. I want the fastest engine without getting too much over $200.00. I want it to be user friendly for starting, idling and then running fast.
I have thought about the Irvine .53, Rossi .53, Rossi .45, Thunder tiger .46, OS .46 AX. I will be adding a quarter wave pipe (ultra thrust or can) so I will gain a little there. Let me hear your opinions and prop choices. I do not want a nelson or Jett. And I do not really want to go over .53 for displacement.

Alright I will be more specific. Under $250. All of the Jetts in this size are 275.00 and up. I really did not want to spend that. Other than the Rossi I think all of the engines I listed are under $200. That is why I used that number. Actually It is not so much about this price range, it is about which is the best available engine in this displacement range that is not a Jett or Nelson? We all know those kick butt.

The Irvine and the OS 46 AX are not high rpm engines so they would be my last choice for your airframe. It is hard to beat a TT 46 pro and it responds well to a tuned muffler or pipe.

RE: Best engine .45-53?
Rich,
Keep an eye on eBay. NIB YS .45s show up there fairly often and can be had for about $150. Other than a Jett, the Y.S. is the most impressive motor in that size I've ever seen.
It is my understanding that the Irvine .53, while being a fine motor, is more of a torque motor than a high RPM screamer. Rossis are good too but then you have to deal with the carb and muffler. Opps, I forgot you'll be using an after market 1/4 waver.
I'd still opt for the YS. Preferably in FR as opposed to FS configuration.

I can't believe no one has said "WEBRA .50-55" yet. On the other hand a good used [or new] Nelson Q-40 engine of the old short stroke variety can be had for what your budget is. If you are serious about speed and reliability, I can't figure out why you don't want the best if it is in reach of your budget? Same goes for the JETT engines, plus you get customer support that is 2nd to none. That alone is a huge consideration if you want to not just go fast, but KEEP going fast, [without making model engine work your new career].

I'll second the YS 45 RE! These are fantastic engines. I pay no more than $180 NIB or $150 good used on RCU or E-Bay.
I got 5 good engines and one from a crook (I use most of the parts).
With good bearings and a good tuned pipe they should pull a 9x9 @ 16,300 (My bench-mark) on the ground and unload like crazy in the air on 15%fuel and OS #8 plug.

I agree with CP on the Webra .50.
If you go TT .46 you will need to upgrade the rear bearing for high speed.[:'(]
IMO the easy money is still the .46 FX or AX.
I got a used JETT .50 for a C-note and it blowes everything else I have off the wall! By far the baddest engine I have seen or flown.

Get a used Jett! You know they haul the mail!
Rossi .53 is a power house. West 50 is a good choice also.
I am with JeffK, I want to see the build on this plane. I have looked at it many times. start a new thread on it and Take many pictures

Vertal grimace:
I did a Zoomer 12% wing and Jett 50L. Was quick and good until the HD switch decided to quit. Have a number of the YS 45s & 60 2s engines, they are good, just not on par with the current Webra. The Webera 55 with Jettstream pipe is as close to a Jett as you are ever going to get. Webra 50 no where as good as the 55!!! Darn thing pulls a 10 X 10 over 17K. I actually outrun a Jett 60LX in the same airframe at frequent club races, but its the tretcherous beyond belief old man with years of experience against a relative newby. Kids good, just makes a few mestakes.. When he starts to get me, will change Webra to the Jett 60LX. Bought my first Jett 6 year ago now, a little 35. Love that engine to death. It was king of the hill for 4 years streight in the club fast open class, and not all pilot or plane, just a screaming little beauty. It turns more rpm today than when new, and still is packed for the races as backup. Bearings, piston sleve fit still tight and smooth, good for many more years. Yes, expensive the first year, but now 6 year later its very cheep. Only engine I have come to respect more is a Jett 60LX. Starts easy, ideles and transitions great and gives me around 19,000 with 8.75 X 8 apc all day, all year. Darn thing does not want to quit though, sware it idles below 1,000 after a race and am trying to land, it just keeps on ticking over. I have no reservation that this engine will be running strong for years, and become very cheep. Compair that to a OS or other that is through after one season. Yes, love my Jett engines but for many reasons, fastest sport engine out there and eventually cheep. No substitute for quality, period!!! Go ahead, be cheap and dumb and buy something else. You will be back to the Jett at some point in self defence cause some old fart flying a bashed Hobbico Avi Star is outrunning you bad, even with your your Zoomer!!!!

On the same Diamond Dust I have ran both tha YS 45 RE (9X9 prop & tuned pipe) and the Webra 55 (9x10 prop & red Jett muffler) and visualy the top speed seems the same. Both had near the same rpm on the ground the YS unloaded further but the Webra made up for it via disk area. Imho, a wash. It may be another story if I had used a tuned pipe on the Webra but I had problems with servo and tail fin being in the way. Both are great engines
Oh, a thick blue exhaust coupling on the YS RE makes a fantastic launch handle, so I don't need a launching device.

RE: Best engine .45-53?
Used Nelson Q40 Short Stroke. They have been selling on E.B.A.Y. for right around $200.
Most of the motors on there are nearly new, and ran by pilots that know what they are doing.... I'm not saying all, but most are recognizeable national pylon racers.
These motors will turn a 7.4" x 8 pitch prop over 22,000 rpm and would make a good fit for your zoomer if you really want to go fast.

Does that qualify under these conditions though?

2 out of 3 aint bad
You won't get an Idle out of a Nelson Q40 motor. Then again, you will have a very difficult time landing a zoomer with a sport motor at idle. It will glide a long way.

No no, said and ment 10 X 10. You gotta have the Jett stream muffler/pipe to wake the thing up. Think was Combat Pig or one of the guys that directed me me to the 10 X 10. Thought it was way to much prop, but it works and works very well. A 9 X 10 simply does not do the job. Yea, strange, but true. If you want speed =rpm, you must get a Nelson or Jett pipe/muffler. Good for around 1,000 rpm which is a bunch. I perfer the Jett simply because of the pressure nipple is machined in where the Nelson is cast in and a pain, at least for me. Both are about equal in quality and performance. Its my Nephew who flys the 60LX against me, great kid. He just gets no help on race day, so his needle work leaves something on the ground. When he gets a good run, its a workout. Like the grim reaper, know hes coming. ENJOY

"...the aiplanes appeared to be near equal in speed. After 3 10 lap heats, the outcome was the same, Webra won. Darned thing turns a 9 X 10 apc around 18K, would probably burn up the Jett, it turns a 8.8 X 8.75 close to the 20's..."

Thanks for all of the replies guys. I knew this one would get exciting. I will do a build thread as soon as my plane arrives. I still have not heard from Matney to confirm my order but he had said he would have planes ready to ship this week.
I think the main reason I want a sport-like motor is I do not want to scare away any participants. When asked "what engine is in there?" I would like to say something other than Nelson or Jett. This may sound odd but I promise that if I go too fast right now I will be flying alone. I may end up getting a Jett for it but I kind of think I may lean towards the Webra right now. I forgat about them. I will certainly have to choose before I start building.

Great points Grimace, and your right, the sticker shock will make people not even consider it. With that in mind, I think an O.S. .46AX would work very well for what you want to do.
