Sundowner 50 Engine?
Hi I am new to the forum but I have just purchased a sundowner 50 and I am having a hard time deciding between the New OS 81 FS-A and the Saito 91..... I am looking for speed but don’t want to compromise my landings by putting to big of an engine in the plane.
If anyone knows what engine would work best for me please post and help me out... also does anyone know if there is a review on the new OS engine 81 thx in advance

I would put a YS 1.10 in it! http://centralhobbies.com/Engines/ys/YSFZ110.html There superchargered 4-strokes. This should make the sundowner go 120+.

RE: Sundowner 50 Engine?
i have never used ys engines but members in my club do use them and after they are dialed in they love them but they say they are tempermental. but some people say that about other engines to, i seriously considered buying a ys but the real downfall for me was that they only have a one year warrenty and saito has a 3 yr, that sold me and price was cheaper. i have 3 saitos and love them all.

RE: Sundowner 50 Engine?
I'd go with the Jett 60 LX because it’s lighter than most 46 class engines and from what I’ve read, you want this plane light for landing and handling. If you don’t care about weight go with the YS 110-S for the ultimate in power, but you better be a good pilot at low speed. Best to land HOT and watch out for high speed snaps/tip stalls because of the higher wing loading.
I HAD two Saito 82's and they were ok with low pitch 3D props but I never could get them to reliably idle low enough to land higher pitch prop on a speed plane with the engine running.

RE: Sundowner 50 Engine?
ok thanks for the info guys..... after reading i think i want to go with saito
how much speed would i be loosing if i was to go with the saito 115 or 91 compared to the YS 110
Is the top speed of the os 81 = to the saito 91

Anyone try a Tower .75 in this plane? I've got two of these engines, and am very pleased with their quality/reliability. Just curious how it would fly this Sundowner 50.

RE: Sundowner 50 Engine?
pkh- When I first built this plane I had a TH 75 before the bearing went out on me. I have a video on youtube of me flying with the 75.
HONOR50 - You can slow this plane down a good bit and still be ok.

RE: Sundowner 50 Engine?
pkh- I have 2 Viper500. The one in the Video has an OS 55 with 10x10 prop. My other has a Weber 40. with 9x8 prop. Both are a blast to fly but the one with the Weber is much faster. I really don't have a favorite go-fast plane. I love doing 3 feet high low pass with my bobcat and this Sundowner. I love my viper as I can do the same, plus pull very hard G's in the turns.
