Shrike 10... again!
Two years ago I built a Shrike 10. Most of it was stock, like the plan says. Only some minor modifications to support an OS.32 tune pipe. By the way I'm very impress by this little engine. I buy it 3 years ago, fly this little engine full throttle 95% of time and its still going strong. No bearing or compression problem…
I buy a new Shrike 10 kit last week, and start to build it last weekend. This time I took pics… this one will be different…

Yes I saw that a couple weeks ago in the Crash forum!! Thats bad, loosing an airplane when this king of thinks happen...
I plan to install it on the left side... far from the Tune Pipe mess...
The project is going good, I will post pics this weekend.

Building process...!
My first Shrike, I move the firewall back by 1/2 inch to accommodate my OS.32. But finally it was too much; I was tail heavy with the battery pack in front.
- This time I stick to the plan for the firewall, but I need to extend the nose to have a perfect fit with the spinner.
- I add 2 carbon fiber rods to reinforce the front and rear spare.
- I add 4x 3/16 square spur on top and bottom of wing ribs to keep the top and bottom sheeting straight.

Still going....
- Put sheeting on
- Put aluminium sleeve for the carbon rod (flying stab)
- Adding plywood block for the tune pipe holder plate

- Finally the fiber plate is ready, I will cut a control horn in it and glue it to the carbon rod (stab)
- Shapping these stabs.... sheeting it...

Finally these stabs are finished... trial fit on the plane...
Now, I will concentrate my work to finish that wing (ailerons, wing tips, torque rod... sanding..). Im still thinking to the rudder (s) shape...
Do I put 2 little rudders on each side of fuselage or just 1 big functionnal rudder.... I will sleep on that!

The Shrike series appeared magically on the market a short time after an article I think in Model Aviation about Russian RC combat models (Doreshenko's?? the name comes to mind) with three views. I had sketched up a .40 sized design based on that article, then maybe the next month or so the first Shrikes appeared. I guess it seemed like a good idea to a number of people at the same time!

Thanks for the Epoxy tips. I will wipe it with alcool first and sand it a bit before gluing it.

Small tech note: waxes are somewhat soluble in epoxy (don't use wax paper cups for mixing for example) so I would suggest sanding the outside surfaces of those horns to improve bond strength.

Still progress.... slowly... but
- Making my ailerons control rods
- Installing the control rod. Gluing in place the ailerons at root and tips.
The ailerons in kit was not wide enough. I make new ones by laminating 3 layers of wood. 1/8, 3/32 center, 1/8. It will be easy to sand and find the center.
- Making and put in place these wing tip. 5 layer of balsa 1/4". Easy to shape and sand. And its only what I have to work with!
A lot of sanding is coming!

Finally, the project is finish.
But I made some modifications to my stab control horn epoxy to the carbon axle. The control horn was too short and didn't gave me the precision I want. I made a new one. Bigger, longer, stronger!
With little work I removed the old one with my Dremel and fixed the new one.
I’m a little disappointed; I didn't want any servos or outside linkages. But I will live with that! With the new control horn epoxy in place, the stab is very solid, no movement without transmitter input, and I have a very precise movement. The movement ration is 2.5 (servos) : 1 (stab).

Still some work to do, acetone cleaning, touch paint, installing the Mac full tune pipe. Need to cut an aluminum plate to hold the end of the tune pipe. But for the Maiden, the original muffler will do the work.
Maybe, this weekend will be the maiden if the temperature can be higher than -20c (-4F)! Its freezing out there. But they announce -5c (23F)
I’m scare to use a full flying stabilisater. Don't know where to start for the initial throws... For the moment I put 1/2 inches down and up with 40% exponential.
I think a full flying stab is more effective, but how much...??? And there is an airfoil in it. Maybe it will modify the CG. But for the moment, I stick with the recommend one (4.5 inch).
The first flight, I will use an APC 10X5. I want a lot of thrust, just in case I have to fight to keep it in the air (the first 5 secondes!! ). I will put only 3 oz of gas too. When the Shrike will be tune and well adjust, I will progressively full the tank to 6 oz and reduce the prop to a custom APC 8.25 X 7.
Many years, you're a positive or optimist guy! "combatpigg" . If it pass all the trimming process, maybe it will survive a season or two!!!

This plane isn't much different from a C/L combat plane and they fly nice with a stabilator.
A 1/2" throw is for 3D aerobatics though , you might want to use 1/4" [up&down] for normal flying and switch to high rate when you test the plane for low speed control.

CG change required with full flying stab? I can't think of a reason why, when it's busy "stabilizin'" the center of lift is in the same place. I have, however, no idea one way or the other if there is a CL location shift with increasing control deflection, and if it differs in magnitude between the two configurations.
