Default Patriot XL discontinued

Just playing around on Tower Hobbies' website and noticed the Patriot XL kit has been discontinued. I guess it didn't sell too well.

I never understood why they enlarged the .40 size and scrapped that one. The .40 was not a small plane.

LD...Think of the effort it takes to launch a kit design and also the risk. They must have been somewhat confident that the bigger version would do alright. I'm not sure what the break down is in numbers between .60 sized and .40 sized planes...around here .40s rule, maybe 2 to 1.
When it comes to scaling up a "speed" plane, small errors in design as far as drag is concerned must get amplified. There are quite a few big slow deltas out there in the .60 category, too.

I think kits, in general, are a very tough sell nowadays .... with the ARF's improving and increasing in numbers. I would like to see an ARF of the XL .... I also really wish they would bring back the ARF version of the regular sized Patriot .... I thing they'd sell a ton of them. Bob

You will probably see the Patriots re-emerge as ARF some day.

But don't understimate the kit market.

There are still a lot of "modellers" out there. Good kits are hard to come by, and they sell well. The smart companies keep the kits available. They do not take up that much shelf space.

The problem is the sport has become an ARF world, and there are only now a handful of companies even making aircraft or kits. So the economics of the model business has changed. Some argue for the better. Some argue it really turned modelling into just flying.

Some have argued that the ARFs have hurt local hobby shops - since you are not there every week picking up hardware, covering, parts, etc (it was a socal thing when I was learning to fly .. not sure its that way anymore). In contrast, some argue that ARFs help the hobby business. I guess you can see both sides. But Im not sure one was better than the other.

Once upon a time we had Midwest, TopFlite, Sig, Sterling, Andrews, Bridi, Goldberg (just to name a few) and lots of little businesses making kits, all out there battling for a share of the market place. Any given weekend, you would find aircraft from those companies at the local flying field (and not two of them looked alike - real personallity and originality). That level of competition for business was good. The big folks now don't have to battle.

Yes Bob, I agree that there are still a lot of builders/modelers out there (I am one myself). But I know that sometimes a company will drop an item/kit because it is simply not as 'profitable' as it use to be for them. Fact is ..... ARF's outsell kits by a very very wide margin. Nowadays, if I see kit I really really like ... I buy it ... even though I may not have a plan to build it for a few years. Bob

I think artf are great and there really shouldn't be any snobbery about being a traditional builder.

Often when I get a artf i change it and make it stronger or make modifiactions on the pretense that often the aftfs are more fragile.

To be fair, the hobby is about building, flying and repairing(Or buy another artf). The busy world has made artf very popular.

Some folk prefer the building to the flying and their skills may be better suited to the construction phase. Others flying or both.

With laser cut parts and improved instructions the art of artf builiding now lies in the radio and engine instalation stage and setting up.

That said, you could argue that some have lost the ability to read a drawing.
