Weston UK Magnum and Q40 Nelson?
Anyone think this would be a good pair? I have the Nelson, don't feel like spending 500+ bucks on a Q40 airframe, and want to go really really fast. I can get the Magnum for 170 bucks new from weston.

I have a 8 year old Magnum with the Weston .50 on it that I fly regularly. Excellent set up and the Weston runs fantastic. That said I have a Q500 Nelson with the variable intake and a new Magnum to put it in. The problem is the Nelson is not a user friendly motor like the Weston. Faster maybe.... I'm not in a hurry to put it together as I have faster planes, both electric and fuel powered....

What about a Matney Zoomer...??? http://www.matneymodels.com/q500.html It's not an ARF, but look at the price**! And these aren't that much work to build. Heck of a lot nicer airframe and far more worthy of that engine I think.
That's my $0.02.

** EDIT - oops, that is the "basic kit", which is the glass fuselage, foam wing cores, and plans. Add ten bucks of wood and some other bits and off you go.

Well I already have a Lanier Predator with a Q500 Nelson on it. It was fast, but not crazy fast. I clipped 10 inches off of the wing and a bit of the tails, and it made it a lot more fun to fly. So much so that I have clipped two other club members Q500's. As far as the Weston goes, it has a really thin airfoil similar to a Q40 plane, and is alot cheaper. 170 bucks, and would take a few hours to build. I think it would really honk with the Nelson....or at least I hope it would.

170 is a bit spendy for the Magnum, I think you might do better watching the bay or offer MJD an offer he can't refuse since he's not going to build the one he's sitting on this decade.
The Magnum is not going to roll like your clipped predator either nor will it turn, it's not even a Q40 ship. I'ts just a fast sport plane and cool to hear and watch fly.
Honestly I get bored if I fly mine too often.

Since when do you know me so well?
Honestly, my two choices are kit-bash it, or sell it. I am still flying number one, and it's an adrenalin rush to fly but it's the kind of aircraft I bring along and maybe fly twice in a session, in between whatever else. It is not exactly versatile, nor is it as a fast as some other aircraft. But is easy to put together and goes like a bat. Spectators and other fliers always dig it.
Now vicman, I've been fondling it lately (Magnum #2), and holding engines and pipes up to the side and making vroom vroom noises. There's hope..

Suggestion....
Consider contacting Kevin Matney - you can pick up a glass/foam QM40 kit relatively cheap. Not a difficult build, and just make a sport model from it. His napier is a very nice design.

Here are a few pictures of my Nelson powered Magnum. I stripped off the Chinacote and recovered it in Ultracote. Pearl Yellow, Pearl White, Pearl Violet, Black and some checkerboard trim sheet. As you can see, I reshaped {covered} the canopy area a little. Has a little more attitude? YES?, YES!!!
I added quickie gear and wheels, and a rudder. Our club field has a paved runway with very limited grass on one side, a lake on the other side, a tree and nut washer on the west end and more lake and trees on the east end. Oh yea, don't forget the clubhouse! As bad as it may sound this field is paradise!!!!
The wing has been shortened by two inches. The garage floor reached up, grabbed the wing and slammed it to the floor putting a big dent in one wingtip. The tips are long blocks of balsa, so I just trimmed them down. That should be good for about 10 more MPH. HA!!!
First flight should take place next weekend.

Sweet looking plane. Nice job. Should perform great......
One word of caution......
The landing gear you have there should work well, but it is located signficantly ahead of the CG on the plane. It is going to bounce on landing, and will probably try to swap ends. Just keep that in mind. Fortunately when the Magnum stops flying, it stops flying.

Yep, they are going real cheap now, but make sure you know what you are getting. Lots of dogs have been mis-represented.
I just finished selling off my last 3 in the past two weeks. I threw in lots of used plugs, shims, over 15 props (including many cnc cut wood props) and BARELY made enough to purchase 1 new Nelson LS motor. Quite a shame, two of those motor were Nationally competitive two years ago...
