For speed, simplicity, price, and not to mention a razorsharp look, get a Weston Magnum....

I agree on the Magnum + West engine combo being about the cheapest speed you can get (and still reasonably sized...not too small). Plus it's got the looks...

But since you don't have a lot of speed experience, put a 9x6 prop on it to fly it the first few times, then work your way up to the 8x8...
And be careful when taking the step to high speed planes: you want to impress everyone at the field... not scare them (hence the 9x6 advice)

Lol... it always fun to see the HUGE fuel jugs the jet guys are lugging around...

I like the Spectre though... I kinda plan on getting one in the near future too... lol, then I'll be lugging them huge fuel jugs too....

If you want something fairly indestructable, and even cheaper (but not faster) than the magnum, buld a Spad DDust:

I've read mixed responses about the Magnum. It might be an awsome performer but I doubt that its a good first speed plane.

The Patriot looks better but they were only re-released for a limited time and are no longer available.

Maybe something like a T20 Tigershark or a SIG Kougar would be more suitable?

How about the Predator Q500 Arf.

Its about $110, and will fly close to 120 mph with just about any 40-46 sized sport engine. It has landing gear, so you can take it off and land without a hand toss, or belly landing.

They fly very nice, and are a great intro to speed.

Yeah... If you have your doubts about learning to fly fast on a Magnum (it can be a handful), a nice Quickie like the Predator would fill the gap easily.

Get a shrike. Easy to fly on a 36, a rocket with a 53 Irvine. Still easy to fly IMO just faster ! The shrike tracks nice and is very easy to land also.
