I've been thinking about a q-500 or similar type "speed" plane.

I've been flying about 12 years now....all kinds of airplanes , but I'm wanting to get into this after seeing some guys at the field rip these things around.

I could do a .45 or .60 size....something rear intake , rear exhaust....just to have a little fun with. Any ideas? Something with a carbon fiber wing?

Does anyone use ducted fan motors with regular props on them?

Q500 is the easiest way to go fast that I can think of. Any decent .46 will cure any ED or speed jones issues you might have.

I started with the GPVIper 500 ... its fun ... not awfully fast but fun with a simple TT Pro 46.

I like to fly planes that look like airplanes, so Q-500 or delta wing flying shingles won't cut it for me.
My favorite air supremacy plane for local field with good looks is the Weston Magnum.

My first was a prediator with a Jett quickie .40.  Still fly this one all the time, not a record setter by any means, but still pretty darn fast.

So the Diamond Dusts that blow by don't count because of their looks? [sm=confused.gif] Not to argue, but I think the Magnum looks dorky myself, like it was colored with crayons. I've seen much better looking deltas and quickies, but a makeover in decent colors would help. Especially since yellow and black, for me anyway, suck for orientation and I swore in about 1984 never to use that color scheme again because of difficulties. The checkers on the bottom are a smear of grey at distance to me. But mileage may vary for others, I dunno. I owned two, but only flew the first one for a couple of seasons, then took a divot out of a LE on a misjudged landing - ran out of energy fighting a bit of sink on the final turn, came up short but mercifully landed in a big crackly shrub. It held up well for a ballistic missile, just a 2" bite out of the LE. I stripped the wing but parked it for now. Sold the other kit to a hungry speed freak somewhere in the prairies, who last I heard had it clamped in a hydraulic press trying to stuff something in the engine compartment.

Ya, the Magnums are cartoonish. Whenever I see one I'm reminded of the 10,000 or so TransAm Firebirds that used to cruise around Colorado Springs in the mid 1970s with those big gawdy decals on the hood. They looked like full scale Mattel "HotWheels" cars . Pontiac must have been running a military discount for re-uppers?
Nothing beats a Q40 and FAI for realism, beauty and speed in one package.

Recovered Magnum compared to a F3D. And todays pic smaller diameter and different shape prop now with a nitro head it easily pops onto the pipe... 28.3k rpm... on the ground richened slightly off peak rpm...

Two things:

1. It ain't as purty as the F3D, no way.

2. That's wayyyyy better looking than a stock Magnum! I like it.

Hey CP, I lived in Springs '89-'93, mebbe I told you that. Watched F-111's doing practice runs while I fooled with explosive sunstances and ogled the wings folding open as they set up for the run. Found black widow spider and brought it home to show my wife. Pointing out that she was pregnant and scared of spiders and that it was venomous, she "suggested" I take it outside somewhere safe and let it go. Yeah, alright, whatever..

Yep, the recovered Magnum recovered some missing "class" with that cleaner look.
I like 'em all just as long as they're fun to fly. The one dimensional speed planes that fly and land like they're carrying a piano you can have, though.

Definetly the cheapest way to go fast. I think the V-tail makes them a little tricky for pulling off aerobatics though.

It's a Richard Verano Special by H&M... actually an older plane that is not competitive in F3D anymore. It's still good for 230mph or so straight line with the right set up...

There are many specialty shops that mold these though most are in Europe. Every now and then these and old racing motors come up for sale. I was in the right place at the right time and was persistant in trying to get people to take my money.     I got a Nelson Q500 motor, the older short stroke from a racer but was too late to get the F3D which was basically ready to fly, add reciever, though it really needed a lot of little thing worked on to get "right". The person that bought it offered it to me when (I think) he found how difficult the plane is to start and fly. It was set up for F3D which uses FAI fuel that is harder to find off the shelf. Putting a nitro head on it so I can use heli fuel (extra oil) made it a whole different story, easyier to start, easier to get on the pipe...  Now if I could find a way to get it to slow for landing better so I don't need a large flying field...

Jeff ... I did some nonsense with mine, Cuban 8s ... Outside loops etc. All on full throttle, the firewall was not happy and it peeled a bit on 2 occassions. I did fly her with a Rossi 53 and a Jett Q500 ... good speed but still in the 120 range only.

If you like semi sorta kinda scale looking planes, the 50 or 80 Sundowner from H9 isn't too bad.

If you go with the 50 pick a Jett60, the bigger 80 really likes the Moki 210

clip 5" off of each wing panel at the tip to cut the wingspan by 10".
Results: 130+ mph, very good handling plane, reasonable landing speed, no bad habits - not expensive.

That sounds like something I'd want to get in to. I've got a ROSSI .45 that could go in place of the Thunder Tiger...but in any event....does the Great Planes Viper come only in a V-tail format or can it be set up with a traditional horizontal and vertical stab???

V-tail only and pretty easy to set up. Read up on improvements that need to be done to the Viper though.

If I could only have 1 plane or the other, no contest...delta all the way.

130 mph with a .32-.36 and land it at walking speed at your feet.


Plus the speed delta kits are made in North America, not China.

ArticCat ... the Rossi 45 and the Viper will be nice, that little 45 is a screamer. I asked Big Bruce about Vtail and conventional ones, he says the V tails to him are faster but negligable. Skill is more important, he is right on that one.
