Default Cermark Delta Vortex

Greetings,

Does anyone have any experience with flying the Delta Vortex? I have a Rossi 90 RIRE that is itching to get back into the air. I know that this plane is offered as a kit and an ARF. I think that it would be easier to build the kit with the mods as I go instead of chopping the ARF to accommodate the engine.

Interested in the flying characteristics. It has a 4" thick wing at the root so I don't think that I would be breaking the sound barrier but it looks like it could be fun. With my experience with the Diamond Dust envelope, if this delta configuration behaves the same, I would be pleased.

Anyone with experience with this kit and it's envelope that would put their 2 cents out would be appreciated.

Default Vortex

Kaos,

A friend of mine has one with a 91FX in it. It is not a fast airplane. The Rossi is obviously a lot more powerful than the OS but I really don't think you will have a bullet on your hands even with the Rossi.

The Vortex is really a very nice sport plane. Easy handling, nice landing. The same fellow also has an Enforcer and I think the Vortex is the better airplane.

Default You could start with the kit....

....and build it as you see fit....

....shave the wing down to 2 1/2" or so....make a good
proper mount for the motor....put the aileron servos in the
wing, make the ailerons smaller, and move them inboard a
little....ect. The ARF is nice....no doubt....but what you see
is pretty much what you get....

Dave.

Thanks, Flyboy

I assume that you are talking about shaving the wing thickness down and not the span... What is the best way to accomplish this and maintain the airfoil on each rib?

....answer....you can't reduce the thickness of the wing,
and maintain the airfoil....It's strickly a "basher"....

....if I was to "cut one down"....(for some speed)....I'd
probably reduce the span by at least 4 inches on each
side....reduce the thickness to about 2 1/2" in the middle
and taper down to at least 3/4" at the tips. The bottom
would be semi-symetrical....

Default I flew one with a .68

I flew one that was built from the kit and it was a blast to fly. The guy built it and put a MDS .68 in it. It had plenty of power. It was covered with coverite and painted, so I think it was a bit on the heavy side. I think with a .90 in it, you could really have some fun, but is it worth the extra work? Now if you want to do some modification, put in a set of retracts. That would make a huge difference in my opinion.

Good luck!

Default But on the other hand....

....If I was to build the kit..."for sport"....I would shave
the wing down to 3" and leave it fully symetrical.....
and leave the wing span alone....

....I mean....you wanted a big flying wing in the first
place....right....? A four inch thick wing is just too fat
for me....trimming 1/2" off top and bottom would be
easy....and preserve the flight characteristics. It would
go a little faster....sure....but it would be a kick to fly.

The Rossi .90 RIRE would drag it through the air in a
pretty ferocious manner....

Thanks for all of the suggestions! A large Diamond Dust was the original intent to carry the Rossi 90 to ballistic velocities but this looks like it could still be fun too.

Can any of you suggest an airframe other than the Vortex that this Rossi 90 RIRE with a pipe would fit in that would offer good slow speed and high speed controllability? Was thinking of building a 2X Diamond Dust from scratch but if there is a kit on the market that would do I'd just as well go that way to save time.

I've got a Trim Aircraft Spectre on the board now. About 1/3 complete at this point and going very slowly due to time constraints.
