Sport Jett 40 is a great deal at $250.

The motor is designed to run wide open all the time, with a fuel line pinch to shut it off.

If you want a barrel type carb I believe its another $30 and it does not come with a backplate. Most of us racers have a few laying around

Still a great deal And should give you close to 40 mph more than where you are at. Just make sure your skat cat can handle it, not sure what you did with the wing, but it may need some reinforcing.

Thanks! I'm eyeing a Jett SS .40 locally. Dub said it will idle somewhat well, but with no low end needle it can be touchy on the slower RPM side. In his words, "If you want to go fast and have fun, get it!"

Sorted out my ground handling, both with a stiffer tail wheel set up, and adjusting the toe-in on my main gear. What a difference the little things make, but it is all about the details, isn't it???

Thanks all for the input!!

By the way, Dave, I covered my wing joint area with fiberglass cloth/epoxy 6" (3" either side of center) on both sides. Will that be adequate for a more powerful engine? My firewall area is reinforced with glass and epoxy as well.

Thanks again.

what weight glass? I see your in Apopka, there should be some SS 40's down there available used as they use to, and are now racing them again.

I was at that field once for a race, nice place.

Not sure of fiberglass cloth weight. Bought at my local hobby shop.

I'd have one of the local racers take a look at it. Doesn't the Freeman's fly there? I think Randy Bridge is close as well..

I just remember that fine sugar sand at the end of the runway. After cleaning out my Venturi / crank a couple times learned to land short if anything.

No ball bearing wheels there

Thanks for the advice! What was the problem with your wing you mentioned in an earlier post???? Was the engine too much??

The Sonic 500 ARF I had was of poor kwallity. You could see thru the white covering to the wood. The the plywood fuselage sides delaminated, rear wing mounting blocks pulled out. As I recall the front dowels did have enough engament. Today all serious Q-500 planes have a four bolt wing mount & the monting blocks are "keyed" into the fuse along with triangle stock underneath.

The wing was never found it was in some 10' tall cattails in a swamp area, the fuse lawn darted past the stand of cattails and was found. So I still have my old JETT SS.40. I paid $50.00 and shipping for the ARF.

I had a couple sonics and they weren't too bad, I used them a lot for OS .46 racing and won quite a few races with mine.

I think the older Model-Tec ones were better than the last couple batches out of China that were sold dirt cheap. I think they closed them out at like $39 for an ARF.

Heres a picture of mine, it was an ARC, so I was able to reinforce areas before covering it. I know it was a while ago, cause its not green It did not have a rudder, so takeoffs were a little exciting, sold it to Lee L. as he was getting into quickie. I remember him flying it into a low cloud and it completely dissapeared (colors didn't help), thankfully he saved it but it was exciting.

The Irony, if you look close there is a circle with a line through it, and it says V-Max underneath that. I built this just about the time the first "expensive" quickie was introduced to market (I think it was $450 at the time). I vowed never to pay that much money for a quickie, well we all know how well that went, and I'm assembling a V-max right now that was given to me from a freind...

Wow, Crazy4flight! That is a great story!! Makes me glad I decided to go 4-bolt instead of the recommended dowels in the leading edge! Is that Jett still running?

Dave, "Never say never," Right?!? As exciting as mine was without proper ground control, I can't imagine how erratic that plane was at the start of a race!! Wow!!

One of the reasons I sold it to Lee was that I had just built my first Seeker and it flew so much better than anything I had ever flown (except the Vortex of course, but those aren't cheap!).

Here is Seeker #2 I think, and my old Sonic. Not sure why we were landing from opposite sides of the feild, but this was a little too close for comfort.

The Jett is still running, I had it on another plane it went in, Rx Failure, and sheared the muffler off. Jett uses soft machine screws so you can remove broken screw from muffler and go fly again. Harden bolts will break the casting on the muffler or tear out the hole in the block.

My Xciter ARF ( made in the USA) has 4-bolt wing mount.

Ok guys, I've modified my Scat Cat with a bit more power. Came across an OS .46V. Jason Shulman told me it was a ducted fan engine from a few years ago that guys used to put on Diamond Dusts. Mounted it on my Scat Cat with a 7.5cc tuned pipe. Gonna see how she screams this weekend.

Also, not to hijack this thread, but I've created a new thread under this same forum entitled "Scream Machine Scratch Build." It is a Roger Purcell design that is similar to Don Muddiman's Flying Machine. In fact, the two flew together quite frequently in years past and shared much of their design themes between their respective planes. This one flies like a Formula 1 race car and can turn on a half of a dime! Fast and furious!! There are pics in the thread. Sunglasses optional!!

Have never done any formal pylon racing, but have always had Scat Cats and China Clippers around for sport flying and a bit of pylon-combat. The pylon-combat was really fun as we would get 5 or 6 in the air and fly an imaginary pylon coarse and try to knock each other out of the race. Kind of like roller derby with airplanes. A China Clipper and an ASP .40 were under a hundred bucks and went together quick.
Here are a couple of my China Clippers with Wing MFG. canopies and Eflite 25 motors running on 4 cell lipo. Not as fast as nitro, but still pretty swift.
