Default OPS on an auction site

[link=http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180466902722&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT]OPS big block RIRE[/link]

I'm not sure if this is a .60 or .65. Looks like a newer OPS slide valve carb fitted. The non-anodized head puzzles me, but the "666" part number is the same as my Speed .65's. Also a bit of a prophecy if the engine runs well.

This isn't mine, trust me - I'm a packrat and an OPS addict. I thought someone here might want to know about it.

I'm trying to quit buying OPS engines on auction for a while, it's a ba-a-a-d habit.

PMO! [sm=angry.gif]

We sat down for dinner minutes before this ended. "Nah, no point."

Nobody bid higher.

The carb alone is worth the price.. and alot more than hindsight.

Win some, ya lose some. But this was a nice speed flier's find.

> an ops pattern/speed 60

It's one or the other, pattern or marine/DF timing AFAIK.. what's the designation/configuration?

3 Super .60 FIRE
2 Speed .65 RIRE
1 Speed .15 FIRE
1 marine .45 RIRE
No money left... [&:]

Ba-a-a-a-d habit scooping these things up. Addictive.

When the .65's convince me they are worn out they will become .67's via new P/L.

Hey Guys...
What are you guys using for the OPS setup? I have a couple (5) of the OPS "big red" (that is what they used to call them) pattern engines. I was looking and from what I have found (or not found) you can't buy the OPS plugs anymore in north america (or can ya?). Back in the day I used to use FAI in them (2% nitro) ...ran a 11x7 or 11x7+3/4 ...and they ran pretty well. Also what is the pipe length you are using? I used to have a starting point measurement but somehow after 30 years has gotten lost!

I would like to get these engines out and play with them again...any info would be helpful.

Thanks
Steve

mike, the "speed/pattern" engine is a .60 speed spa/rca. it is a fire version engine. the box says speed but the rpms are set at 14k or so if i remember right. my real speed version is a nib super .67 fan gold head. that one looks fast just sitting in the box.

I thought that one was simply called the Super .60 while the high-timed versions got the "Speed" label. But my knowledge is limited to the gold head Super .60 pattern engines, those are what I have. I'm no OPS historian - just curious.

Yeah, the .67 is a beast, about 10% more top end than the .65's. Luckily, the P/L is interchangeable with the .65's so like I say when mine seem too pokey I can upgrade - for about the cost of a 46.. . They are just gorgeous engines, both in looks and performance. You get whay ya pay for.

I watched the final 15 minutes before time ran out. It was at about $62 and jumped to $68 in the final seconds. It's got to be worth that price just for the external parts.
I'd like to know if anyone has taken a grinder to the sport timed engine and turned it into a speed engine?
With good results, I mean to say........
also, does the crank need to be drilled out to match the high timed version?

My OPS 65 has a needle bearing rod, does this mean it can handle more RPM's?

So I've been told, and that 24k is a sensible top end limit for the plain bushed versions. Keeping the big end slippery under the loads these things generate can be a challenge and ~22% oil was recommended to help that situation. The top end should hold together for a few more K above that. The CL speed guys run these things up 25-28k. Don't even think of trying to run yours faster then mine or I'll hit the spars with the Zona saw next time we're flying..

My OPS Speed .15 is FISE. But of the 10/11cc family I think that is true, yeah. CP is talking about an engine tinkerer's conversion of the pattern variety I think. I put mine all back together last week so there wasn't one open to measure the crank passage. I have one of the Super .60's fitted to the test stand, I plan to run some 10" props this week and tinker with the header to see what lurks in the mid teens. The suggestion to set one up for 10-8 or so has come up more than once, as a "powerup" for .40 sport models.

I have the feeling he got tired of all the bench racing, Shrikes and prop jets. They take speed flying a bit more seriously over the pond. In any case, all the OPS big block info you'll ever need has been posted here already.

the front intake ops engines are carb limited, with the stock carbs, I don't have a front intake ops 60, i have the ducted fan engines. A 10-11 mm carb will let it breath better most are around 7.5-8mm, upping the exhaust timing to 180 still works with the smaller bore carbs, the perry/conley website has some drop in carbs for very little money

For sure, OPS uses pretty small carb bores on the patterns engines, if you compare them to sport .61's and the like. But how big a hole do you need/want at 14k; the Super .60's make a heap of power yet have impeccable manners, and I'm sure a key part of that equation is the smallish carb throat and higher intake velocities that result. I imagine they would respond to a larger carb bore but I wonder at what point would they start go lose some of that refinement. I think I have a couple of carbs on this and that I could try out. If I am looking to crank one up to 17-18k on smaller props that this might be quite beneficial. I'll bet that in the heyday of 10cc pattern flying all sorts of changes were tested out.

The Speed .65 I've bench tested a few times seems quite happy with the near 11mm bore carb I put on it; of course I am not expecting the tickover idle and wham-bam response of the Super .60's.

exactly small carbs are fine for less than 15k operations, its not meant as a criticism at all, the trend to larger carbs is for this forum mainly, if one examines OS/YS heli engines they reflect more of the RPMS that we aim for here, and OS 50-55 sx engines use 10MM carb throats as do the 61,70,and 91 engines as well. it was very common in the day for OPS/Rossi pattern guys to go to a large perry carb, with excellent results.

No criticism taken LF, my wording might be unclear or just strange - all I meant was, I wasn't sure how much gain to expect by upping the carb bore when using them in that rpm range, and whether or not there would be a negative change in manners as a result. From what you say, they were upgraded with larger carbs with good results. Knowing that, I will indeed mess with one and see what gives. Can't hurt much on the bench, except the ears and fingers I guess.

Almost every part on that engine is worth more than $68. The new slide valve carb, the rear disc assembly, the crank, the p/l, the.. sigh.

I just measured the crank passage on one of my Super .60's - wow, it's 0.460", or 11.7mm. So yeah, a carb bore anything up to what, 90% area of that area @ 0.435" (?) or so ought to improve flow to the case? The carb inlet diameter is only 0.321" by comparison. Okay, now I am detrmined to recarb one.

Sounds like a good lathe project, make a 13 mm venturi out of nylon and reuse the high speed NVA.
The Nelson .40 uses a 13 mm party bowl, so you gotta figure that any .60-.90 that can't keep the fire lit with a 13mm bowl is a "light weight"........[8D]

the carb on my d/f ops .80 has diameter of 10.1 mm, the picco 80 d/f carb has a bore of of just under 12MM, i pulled the motors apart and shot some pics this afternoon, i did discover that the OPS 80 D/F motor has the needle bearing bottom end, other than that almost all parts interchanged... the OPS has a tungsten slug insert on the crank , i suppose this is to compensate for the heavier rod..FWIW

yup CP some os .90's need not apply.....

The OS 91 VRDF has a 12mm carb bore, not too bad.

you can stick your thumb in the OS carb.
