An old British pilot came up to our museum's RAF Tiger Moth 2-3 months back at a fly-in, and was looking at the fuselage strakes ahead of the vertical fin. The pilot was explaining to someone how they were supposed to help in spin recovery by cleaning up the airflow over the tail surfaces. He said "nah, that's not what they're for..". He patted the top and said "that's where you put the ladies".

Now we know what those symettrical wear marks in the paint are..
