New fast airframe in the works
Hello speed freaks
I am new to this forum but I have been flying fast prop planes for a long time.
I am designing (more like taking an old design and making mods) to make a very fast plane that can be scaled to accomodate one of three power plant sizes, pipes recommended in all sizes:
1. 45-50 Hi RPM Glow (DF, West, etc)
2. 60 to 100 Glow
3. Zenoah G62 with pipe (maybe even some mods from Daves Motors). This one is really the one I want the most, as I have certain trouble seeing the smaller planes.
All of them will be capable of extreme speeds. I am working on this in my spare time, but will post more info as it comes along. It is a bit different than our usual speed stuff, but the experiment is fun and worth the time.

Are you planning on selling it as a kit or ARF?
I can't count the number of times individuals have come here talking about the fast designs they are working on. I can easily count the ones that made it to production. Good luck with your design.

Edit - If you think I was patting myself on the back you are sadly mistaken. Designing a competitive Q40 is beyond my skill level. I stay within my limitations. I have noticed that most completed projects (like the recent Dart XL and some real airplanes with a fuse and tail) just show up finished. There is nothing wrong with dreaming but some appear to just be looking for notability. I may be wrong in this case and probably should have kept my mouth shut.

Yak13, a G-62 speed project would be like nothing I've ever seen before. It would be great to see you do a "build thread" here with pictures of your progress.

Sometimes it gets beyond good natured when people talk about them with contempt - not that you did - which of course just ends up being one of those "what I do is best" attitude things that nobody likes, cares, or wants to hear about.

No problem - the delta likers (who generally also like other aircraft too, it's not an exclusive thing) just like them, that's all. There is usually some good natured prodding back and forth, like yours. You might have to excuse a touch of defensiveness when folks aren't sure about the level of your digging. Esp. from people who manufacture or design delta kits.. ;-)

No other kind of speed model survives hay field flying better than deltas. I've "pasteurized" Q-500s for flying at my field, but they still end up getting ripped up more. Any conventional plane that lands at a high enough speed will catch a wing tip on a clump of grass, a mole hill, etc. and go for a tumble. The deltas land slower and knife right on through the rough.
It's about practicality. Where else could I fly all day with open exhaust, no throttle and a store stocked with ice cold beer 4 blocks away?

it will be better received. The guys at the club used to call my first Dust a "baseball home plate" flying around. I happen to like the looks but especially the way they fly. Not sure how this thread got onto deltas as I didn't mention them. Again, to each their own.

Ok guys. It is a "real plane", with a fuselaje, wings and tail section. 9% wing and stab (dont get me wrong, I still love Deltas). I took an old pattern design and modified it. I have finished the plans and have found the right builder for it.
The bigger version should be able to accomodate a G62 with a pipe. What I am still missing is the prop. I think a 16x18 might do the job. Any ideas?
This is actually a team project I started in my company, but four or five people are getting involved. All with lots of RC and aeronautical experience.

Starting construction next week. We will build two sizes, two prototypes of each. Balsa fuselages w/ plywood and carbon fiber reinforcements. Glassed foam wings w/carbon reinforcement.
Should have list of materials this weekend.
Large model: G62
Small model: West Eurotech 50V
Both with pipes
Maybe I´ll setup the second small model with an old Webra .61 RE w/pipe and a high pitch prop.

By the way, the G62 is being worked on by a partner in this project. Raising compression and doing some other "secret" mods. So secret he will not tell me. You know engine guys.

I want a plane that is capable of 2 bills with a decent engine (Jett, Rossi, etc) and cost less than $150. There's your design criteria.
