Wow someone from my home field! Planeblahblah you sure do look familiar! Anyway, I got a pretty clear dopler from that video and it was consistantly at 168km/h which is about 105mph. What prop you swinging and what are you taching on the ground? Prolly take about 4hp to make a sundowner 50 fly that fast.

Theres no way that planes doing 105 mph. That plane beats YS 110 Warbirds at our field easily. Its weird last night i kept getting 155 mph but now for some reason i keep getting 144. I dont know what happend lol heres my screen shot

You should be over 100 but I can't see 155 with that motor/ plane. Comparing it to four stoke powered warplanes is apples to oranges and yes you should be faster than them.
144 with a tail wind is about what I would think as reasonable. Of course you don't state the tail wind speed...

Yah that is true, the only reason I mentioned that is because the other guy from my field said it was doing 105mph. We all know a 4 stroke YS110FZ 40 size Mustang doesnt do 105 at my field, they have been radared plenty of times.

Planeblah what size prop are you spinning? Any tach readings? I usually have a Prospeed radar at my disposal but currently in the hands of one of the other owners (shared ownership). Woulda been happy to meet you at the basin and get some concrete readings on video.

I could see a .40 size P-51 with a YS110 doing well over 105mph with the right prop....
So you had maybe a 5-7 mph tail wind at most? Sounds like a true 140 or so, very respectable for an ARF that really wasn't designed to go that fast... Now how are you going to make it faster??

Someone brought a Stalker pro radar gun at our field.Basically The average speed was around 140 we did u get 167 out a of a dive but those dont count [sm=thumbs_down.gif]. We got alot of 138 upwind 144 down wind so around 140 would proabbly be right. I took videos of it and the radar gun ill proabbly put them up on your tube and some video of the plane and the install.

Someone flew a Sundowner today with a Jett .90 LX he tried 11x8 and 10x10 and man I can tell you the YS 91 heli engine blows it out the water. I really wanted to try that combo but after seeing that plane fly man it was a dog. Even the YS1.10 warbirds where passing that thing. The engine sounds really good but i guess i was expecting much more.

I wouldn't mind seeing more of that 90LX installation.
I've noted to a few people that I dont really recommend the 90LX in this application. If it is not set up properly, or if someone adds a bunch of exhaust extentions to the setup, its just not going to work properly.
If he is running a crud load of muffler extentions, he needs to match the props better to the resulting rpm peak.
We have seen up to 135mph level flight with the 60LX installation. Done properly, the 90LX should get more than 5 mph better. The GP toni gets up over 130mph with a 90LX, and it is a bigger airframe. If not, then its obviously the wrong engine choice for the job.
Its still probably not going to match what a high-timed pressure-fed YS.91H can do. But it sure should come close.

I think your right about the muffler extensions he said he lost some rpm and the motor sounded diffrent than before, and it seemed alot faster on the big cermark prop jet. Maybe ill get a pic of it today to show u guys, because he might sell me it hehe.

I got a question bob. Is it possible to run a 90lx on a perry pump and just put a straight header on it? my field has no noise restrictions and will that hurt performance much?

I'd not recommend trying the pump. They rarely work on the Jett engines, and they are very difficult to work with on tuned exhaust systems.
About 20% of the power the engine develops comes from the jett-stream muffler. A straight or open exhaust would drop performance. Plus it needs the balance of backpressure from the exhaust system.
You could use a full size pipe - that can help it perform a bit better, and Ive seen some photos around here of decent pipe/header installs on the sundowner.
The 90LX configured for the GP Toni has the longest extention kit we recommend for the engine. That setup turns a 12x6 up around 14,000 rpm, and an 11x8 a little bit higher than that on ground peak. Runs about 800-1000 rpm lower rpm than without the extensions. Add more extentions than that and you either have to work with props to find a sweetspot where the muffler stages properly... or consider the regular lower timed 90L engine.

I have the 90 LX on a GP minnow with the extensions, and like Bob said you do lose some Rpms.
I am running at about 14,600 on an 11X8 APC and it loves it right there, I also have a 90 LX
on the Cermark F-16 and thats running at 15,100 on an 11X8 APC.

RE: 140+ mph H9 Sundowner 50 Arf
Hi all,
I have a sundowner 50 and want to put the OS 46 from my twist in it. I have a macs pipe (the black one) on the 46. was hoping to be able to mount the engine on its side and have the pipe run thru the firewall and exit the side under the wing.. the pipe doesnt quite fit in there as hoped. It looks like I would have to cut out some of the firewall and possibly modify the gear mount box some. I dont want to add weight to this unnecessarily. This motor is only to get my feet wet with the plane and see if I like the way it flies etc etc. then go with the jett60 or similar. any thoughts on how to make it work with the 46.. I looked at mounting the engine inverted and have the pipe come out the cowl on the left side but wanted to keep a clean look to the plane. might not be possible with this combo though. any thoughts would be appreciated, pictures of your similar setup even better..
thanks,
david
