Wiggy, Peacocks is perfect.... Man, I doubt there is 18 speed deltas in this entire State flying. I've never seen anyone flying another speed delta, ever. I've seen some of those BTE and BUSA deltas lumbering around in the past..but they don't apply to this topic.....

RE: How fast is extreme?
CP,
I go to Mac Hodges at least twice a year. This is where I flew with 17 other deltas. It was truly a blast. I also go to Henderson Ky for their fall (September) fly in. Lots of the same pilots attend both of these. Mac's B-29 went in at this field. They fly something called a "Pride and Joy" in Ky that Rev. James Turk designed. They refer to this plane as a "zoom zoom" at the field and it is quite descriptive. The Pride and Joy has about a 36" wing and usually a .32-.37 engine. They fly a lot like a Dust and may roll even faster than a Dust. A snap roll like seldom seen and stay together.

The sound of a Rossi 45 or a MVVS with a short pipe screaming will always make the giant scale guys nervous. That is so funny to see. They will always land as soon as they can. We have one guy who flies with us who is an ACE, 7 confirmed kills with only 1 loss himself. Any of you ever seen a fast plane plough right through a flimsy prop hanging 3D plane? Hehehehee ... he done it with out any damage to his own plane.

I quite often wait for a break in the action to fire up something fast. Not because I want everyone to watch, but because I know some members are not comfortable with a 190 mph plane flying down the runway 20 foot out at 20 feet off the ground.
When you are not use to seeing that, it feels like the plane is about 5 foot out and 5 foot off the ground.

For the casual sport pilot, I think something like that haunts your ears (especially) and your peripheral vision and feel like it needs your attention for no other reason perhaps than self-preservation - which is pretty distracting. I am sympathetic to that. A bit.

Deltas with rear exhaust and smoky rich needle settings aren't too kind to the nostrils if you are the hand launcher. They will definitely clear your nostrils however, and quite aggressively.

Figure out the average pressure inside the pipe, then multiply that by the cross sectional area of the stinger outlet to get thrust in pounds.
The smoke is only tasty when there's lots of castor. But the squitters afterwards is a nuisance in the field..

RE: How fast is extreme?
I realized my speed plane was extreme when I began to literally check every screw, dowel, pushrod, clevis with a fine tooth comb after each flight. Tug on everything. Every little portion of covering that began to lift even in slightest was either ironed or glued. If something breaks at the wrong time, I can't help but wonder how far a Nelson will go into my skull at 190. Also considering waxing my plane. Is THAT extreme enough? [sm=what_smile.gif]

EXTREME IS a "belly landing" a Magnum at full throttle and watching it turn into a torpedo!
EXTREME WAS doing a touch and go (glide) with a Shrike OS.46FX and a pipe at full throttle. ( broken prop )
and Extreme speed is directly proprtional to Extreme spending.
My SIG Kobra with a JETT 30. is quick but not EXTREME to me, but IS to some.
The BVM Bobcat is EXTREME in price and can be EXTREME in speed depending on tubine used.
And a Dodger and JET SS.40 is just plain old fun to me.
So Extreme, is releative to your own viewpoint.

Lulz. I'm going to find someone with a 190mph capable sports car and fly my Magnum from the passenger seat. Then, I'm going to stick my head out the sunroof (this 190mph capable sports car has one) and tach the Nelson IN FLIGHT. Is that extreme?

Nice. I have the Stage 1 turbo upgrade on my Chevy HHR SS, 290 hp at the flywheel @ ~22 pounds of boost. It is pretty quick for a plane hauler!

I want to see you reach up and tweak the needle in flight with your free left hand. [sm=48_48.gif]
But I love it! If you open your mouth with your head out like that, well, I pity the driver.
2 summers ago, I had an Ultra Stik .40 on floats at a buddy's cottage. He had a boat good for 40 - 45 top end. Brilliant idea, of course - take off and pilot it from the boat and fly around the lake. In fact, it was a great idea and we had an entourage in the end. But the disorientation from flying from a moving platform can be serious! You think it's moving, it's at a stall, that sort of thing. Takes a bit of practice, it is kind of a twist on those first battles with orientation. Especially when flying around yourself and doing aerobatics, kind of a mental midway ride. But seriously, the fun thing was pinning the boat, which required something close to slow flight trim on the model & 1/3rd throttle to match, and just flying alongside each other watching it do its thing from the moving vantage point. A few rolls, some inverted, all good fun.
Well anyhow, I know it's all kidding, but I was going to say flying a speed plane from a high speed sports car might be more of a head-in-the-blender trip than you ever would have imagined, I did it before at about 1/4 the speed. Flying alongside is good, the departure speed messes you up.
