Default 60 size delta

I have an extra YS 60 RE with pipe that needs a home and was thinking a delta would be fun. Anybody know of a 60 size delta kit? Something in the 40-42" range would be about right, I would think. I'd be willing to build it from plans if I have to. I suppose I could scale one up from a set of 40 size plans if that were the only option....any ideas where I can get a set of those?

Thanks,

Rick

Default RE: 60 size delta

I scratch built a 36" DD type bird that floats like a trainer with a Webra .50

At 36" it looks huge...it looks more like 40" to the naked eye.

Funny thing, it was still "small enough" to hit the mid 150s with the Webra.

Be careful about going too big, those square inches start multiplying fast when you go up in span.

36" span with the same aspect as a Screamin' Demon should be plenty of wing area....but if you go 40-42" that should be a safe bet for a "trainer type". Bear in mind that if it isn't kept as light as possible, it will be a real dog. Build it as much like a DD or SD as possible.

In all the years I've witnessed no fast .60 sized deltas. They've all been fully sheeted and 'glassed monstrosities with landing gear, heavy duty everything, incredibly heavy if you ever reached down to pick one up. There was 1 old alcoholic carpenter who used to show up to fly his BUSA NorthStar..and a BTE delta [that looked more like a dirigible from the side]. Even though this guy was always smashed, no one really had to worry because those planes were going to snap roll on the first turn after takeoff and plow dirt anyway....if they even made it that far.

The old heavy designs helped perpetuate the myth that flying wings need reflex to fly level...well of course they do if your plane is fully loaded with gas and bombs! An overweight model will need "reflex" too.

....do a search on the "Delta Vortex", if you want a bigger plane.
They used to come as a kit, then as an ARF as well. I have an
ASP .91 in mine....it's a cool plane.
