Default Evolution .60NX W/ Jett Muffler for Sundowner

I am just starting to put together a engine package for the Sundowner 50 and have a few questions for you guys. I will be running a Jett Stream muffler. I am wondering which engine to run! I do not need the total performance of the Jett engine, just strong performance. I am stuck between the Magnum .52, Evolution .52, or NEW .60NX, or the OS .55. Everybody on here has to know that I am not a OS fan, but am looking for the best performance with a Jett Stream muffler for the money.

60NX Not much info on it yet, but if my gut feeling is right, it's the new inexpensive, quality, power king......time will tell

I got an OS 75AX completely in the cowl. Used a Slimline pitts muffler.
Balance was perfect with the battery near the servo tray.

I'm building a 2nd one soon and thinking about the new 95AX or a Jett engine??

I guess I will have to pick up another .60NX for myself. I bought one the other day for a buddy and his SD 50, but he wants to keep the exhaust simple.

So are these Evolution engines pretty good power wise? I have not heard anything about them. I though they were more of a user friendly type engine. Are they trying to get them to be higher performing now?

I put the OS .91 in mine with pitts muffler, not much trimming to the cowl. Best run 206 kms.

Every example of the older models that I ever seen ran just like all of the other .46's on the market. I thought they seemed to tune well and be as powerfull as the OS's. This New engine appears to be an animal at 17 OZ's incling the stock muffler.

Copied from Horizon Hobbies which also states that it will turn a 11-7 @ 13,500 with the supplied muffler. They also list the Macs pipe and header to use with it along with the proper glow plug in the manual.

Key Features
Smaller size and lighter weight than typical displacement .60 engines. which leads to a higher power to weight ratio.
Fits smaller airframes where .60 size power was not previously available.
7oz lighter than competitive .60 size engines.
Deisgned to make use of aftermarket tuned exhaust to enhance 40 size plane performance by increasing power.
Overview
The new Evolution .60 is revolutionary for modelers demanding the most from their engines. This new engine provides the performance of a .60-sized engine in the case size of a .40-size engine, allowing modelers to put more power into smaller configurations. The .60 will truly be a “hot rod;” it will provide modelers with speed and performance which has previously been unavailable in the .40-.60-size sport market. For the modeler who doesn’t want to stop at the impressive speeds offered out of the box, the engine will be designed to work with aftermarket pipe systems to provide the ultimate in model engine performance.

Here is a picture of Mike Mcconvilles piped Evolution .60NX in a pattern plane that Horizon will have on the market shortly.

Yeah.....I would have liked to have seen what it did without internal mods first. The results now are irrelevant comparisons between it and other 55-60 size engines. [&o]

Just PM MMcConville, for performance with a Pipe since he has done alot of testing with it.

My mods will not affect it much anyways. I did not CHANGE THE SIZE OR SHAPE OF THE ORIGINAL. I just smoothed out the ports which had burrs. I do have access to another, that will be stock with the supplied muffler. But he has the same problem with the weather. We are both in the same Club building Sundowners.

I could just Buy a New sleeve/piston so you guys will stop complaining, since they are like $26.00.

okay, so lets see some crank timing numbers as well as exhaust timing numbers, this would be very relevant.......engines are pumps, make the numbers right and they will run, if they are made of the right stuff. the pictures i have seen so far seem to say it has modest specs, as well as the pics of the pipe installations with long header lengths FWIW...

I think if you just subtracted 200rpm from your readings you'd have safe numbers to quote..

There's only so much you can do with the limited air handling capability of the small diameter, 1/4" output shaft .40 case [if that is what this engine is]. Using over sized displacement to draw more mixture through helps, but the heavier piston and higher drag in the liner will limit gains.

I'm not looking at the engine as it comes out of the box, but at it's hot rod potential as a speed engine, not just another 110 mph 11x7 turner.

It is indeed .60 CI engine inside of a .40 size case. I don't think Horizon is trying to market it to Ultra Speed guys, but instead to people who want the Ultimate for a .40 size sport plane without dumping out your wallet. You cannot tell the difference when it is sitting next to a .46 or .52 from Evolution if you did not look at the displacement cast in the head.

This side of a Jett engine, where can you find a engine of this displacement and physical size that weighs 14 OZ.

Hopefully it turns out to be a honker. The Webra .50 was marketed similar...but it cost a pretty hefty chunk 20 years ago. At the time, I didn't care about speed so much, just power to weight.

If this engine can turn a 9x8 or 9x9 half way decently and last for awhile, that would be great news.

I have my fingers crossed on this one. The Tower .75 has allways been my favorite otherwise, but this compact engine will fit so much better in the Sundowner .50. I will surely let you guys know how it runs as soon as we get a little warm spell here in WI.
