Jett22,
I just had the Rossi.61. Sold it on RCU for the same price as they are on sale for. Dub Jett's are nicer but a little more than 189.00 . I still haven't finished my Jackal. Just putting on the finishing touches. I have the Jett 60 LX in mine , but I have the issue with the prop stud that is a bit too short to accomodate the backing plate, prop and spinner. Need to find one locally that is about 1/4 longer.

Hey guys just want to give you a heads up.
I almost lost my electric jackel yesterday. On a fresh charger went real high up did a power dive with the 15mph winds 3 feet off the run way I was at 170 mph and my stock elevator Cleve's broke which coused a tone of flutter, it did not brake when pulling up but I was already straight and level for 6 secound, this flutter almost shook my whole rudder off at the babases
i have had 27 or so flights I. The 165 mph range before this happen.
So beef up your Cleve's and brace your rudder a lilittle
I can't believe I was able to bring it back safely every time I pulled up it coused the plane to twist and had to counter with Ali and add rudder to get it back around it was a crazy ride

We got a guy bring a nice gun, but right now we are just eyeballing it, and useing the fact its faster than my boys and now my turbine powered crafts.
I got a 18 pound turbine in a slick 106 Delta Dart but at full power this jackel is a little faster. But the turine gives me 7-8min flights vs 3.5min with the jackel.

I've gotten my Jackal broken in and tuned pretty well. I'm running the recommended 10x7 APC prop and find that it's hitting a peak in flight RPM of around 17,500 and was wondering if maybe I should try a 10x8 or 9x9. Maybe I'll radar all three tomorrow to see what I get with each.

So we got it on radar today and I was a little surprised by the results. I did two runs each way, 123 mph into the wind and 129 with the wind for an average of 126 mph with the APC 10x7 turning 17,300 peak. It seems pretty much inline with what should be expected from this plane. I was surprised because it simply didn't feel that fast, I was thinking it was in the 110 range. I changed the prop to a 10x8 APC and made another 2 runs each way. I was surprised again to get 133 mph into the wind and 139 with it for an average of 136 mph with a peak RPM of 16,900. Now it was starting to feel fast. I'm really liking the Evo motor, it starts instantly every time. Idles smooth and reliably, never flames out and doesn't burn glow plugs. During break in the temps were all over the place, once hitting 300 degrees at over 3 turns out but now I'm down to 1 3/4 turns and it never exceeds 185 degrees. I could probably go leaner but it runs so well I don't see any reason to mess with it. Do you guys think I should just fly it as is or maybe try a 9x9 prop to lower the RPM's a little more?

Well, I finally got my wife out to the field and was able to get a video at our club's monthly meeting of my electric Jackal 50. I just posted it to YouTube. Not the best video in the world, or the best landing with a 10mph crosswind, but still it is a GREAT plane, it turns heads and it is a blast to fly. Let me know what you think.

Also, I am curious, how many people are still flying their Jackals. The thread has died over the last few months with Hanger 9 discontinuing it. I think hopes are fading of a Jackal 2 but who know. Horizon might surprise us, or maybe someone else will step in with a great prop jet. Not everyone wants an EDF!!!

Kind of takes the fun out of it, and I don't want to spend the $$ on a new body, and I cant figure out how to get rid of the slop of the rudder. And yes I already had the rudder servo moved to the rear as Im useing electric.

I hear your pain on flutter. On my first Jackal, I had a flutter shatter my entire elevator control system, clevis, pushrods, servos, etc. Clearly, I lost the plane, with a high speed nose dive. The crash was spectacular.
On this new Jackal, I redid everything for strength and durability to reduce or eliminate flutter and give myself full redundancy through the entire system. For all control surfaces, I replaced every clevis and servo connection with 4/40 titanium turnbuckles capped with ball links. Servos were upgraded to all metal Hitec servos with metal horns. For the elevators, I am using 2x 236oz servos on 7.4v. One servo for each elevator half. On the Rudder, I am using a single 90oz servo. All this together, greatly reduced the slop in the surfaces and flutter is a thing of the past. I will take some pictures when I pull the elevator off for some routine maintenance before flying this weekend and post them here.
The other thing you can do is try pulling the rudder off and putting in a new pushrod that is a bit longer and redrill the hole a bit higher in fresh wood, just incase the hole got enlarged due to flexing. I hope that helps a bit.

Ironically the hardest part is getting the props. I am turning between 18K and 20K RPM on a 12x12 prop and the Graupner props have proven to be a solid performer. But a single nick in in them and they have to be replaced for fear of inflight failure. Unfortunately with their bankruptcy and buyout, I can only get them from Europe right now. To make matters worse, I can't get them directly from Graupner because the are reestablishing a US distributer and won't ship directly to the US, so I have to order them from London. WHAT A PAIN!!!!
This is definitely my most expensive plane. Just ask my wife!!!! But it turns so many heads every time it flies, that to me it was worth the investment. It looks great, flies great, sounds great. Everything about it is 100% awesome. PLEASE HORIZON, BRING IT BACK!!!!!!!
My biggest concern right now is what happens if I crack a wing. I can't get them from Horizon anymore and the gear mounts really don't like the extra weight of an electric setup. I ended up carbon fiber reinforcing the wooden blocks and putting Robostruts on it to help with the shock but I have broken wings on landing before from what I considered only a modestly bad landing.
I am thinking about molding the wings and fabricating a set of fiberglass/carbon fiber wings for it this winter. That will also help me get over my fear of anything over 3Gs in a turn.

Still flying mine almost every weekend! I get 7 minute flight times with an OS55AX turning a 10x8 APC prop. Best landing plane ever. I can do wheelie landings with ease. Great little plane.

I finally maidened the Jackal today.. I wish I had a better report but on the 2nd flight the engine started getting sluggish and I was on final, turned and it seemed as if I had no elevator.. In she went .. Broke a bunch of stuff .. If any one has a right wing, let me know. Can't get parts anymore online.
The Jett 60 was giving me loads of trouble. I was only getting 15.5 k rpms on the ground with a 10x7. when I was in the air i took a few laps and the engine was loosing power. This happened on both flights. I also needed to switch my elevator to high rates. On low rates when making my first aileron turn I was giving full up and it was very slow to maintain altitude.
So .. If anyone has a wing .. let me know.

Sorry to hear that Dan. Yes the Jackal has very little up elevator. I think many who put this bird together might have missed the CG and were nose heavy. The other thing is that the stock fuel tank that came with it was cheap. Mine cracked and had tons of problems with my Jett 56 until I realized it. I thought you could still order parts from Horizon?
#1524
I had the plane balanced perfectly. I had to put some lead in the tail along with the battery. The first landing was perfect, balance was spot on. Lots of elevator, I agree. You can still get some parts from Horizon, but they are out of stock/discontinued for the right wing. If I decide to rebuild I think I will swap out the engine for something a little more reliable and better mid range. I have little interest in keeping the throttle wide open during the whole flight and this Jett 60 is finicky like that. Also thinking about going electric with it.
Despite crashing, I still had a wonderful day at the field. Got to test fly the Comp-Arf 35% yak that I am buying and flew a couple other planes I brought for the day. All part of this wonderful hobby!
