New p-51 stiletto
Well, it's been a long time since I've put together a new plane This plane started out as an orange Phoenix Streaga and made the conversion to to Stiletto. Can you spot the changes ? It has an OS 91 ring engine turning a 11X14 at 12,500 on 30%. Airframe strength mods include adding triple 1/8" ply's to the wing mount bulkhead and mid-span former to makeup for thinning due to the 16oz fuel tank change. The firewall has some perimeter reinforcement and extra CA. The wing center section is glassed as well as the saddle area. The elevator servo was inverted for a better alignment and a "Y" push rod was fabricated. Carbon fiber added to both sides of the stab. Balsa veneer was added to both sides of both ailerons to bring them up to proper thickness. Top of stab and wings are florescent yellow, everything else is black. I hope to maiden on Sunday.

RE: New p-51 stiletto
The first flight was a rough one. The 11X14 prop turn out to be too much and lugged the engine down a bit when it hooked up or the pipe was too short. I tried to land and did six or so passes but it was too fast with the engine on with a 14 pitch. On the last pass I lowered the idle trim and the engine quit right as I was going to go around. Too far and hot to land on the runway, too slow turn back....sh@#%*&t! It landed in the gopher mounds that dominate the area and broke the prop, cracked the chin of the cowling a bit, p'ed me off and bruised my pride. I wish I could shoot or poison the vermin, but the PETA locals would have fits.
I cleaned out the dirt, readjusted the low speed screw and put a 11X12 on and went again. Much better, about 140 ish. The engine was unloading a bit too much for a 91 so a bit more prop is needed.

your 11X14 prop, Is it a cut down 14X14 APC? If it is, any special secrets to doing this?

Would you like to try one on your 91Heli engine Mr Jensen? Say please. It may be too much prop by the time your engine is in its working area.

I am still testing and tuning my race plane. With a YS 91 Heli engine and 10x9 apc prop it is turning 15,500 on the ground with 30%, She is flying fast and I love the power and the sound

RE: New p-51 stiletto
Thanks Iron.
I've got about 12 flights in on it. It's quick and smooth, but I think the WM Mustang turns tighter and carries more speed around the turn than the Phoenix Strega... hard to tell since the WM converted to kit some time ago [&o] Time to see if it'll handle some high speed snap rolls I'm not going to race it.

I would say you have a lot more left in your engine. I was running a OS 70 heli engine and I was getting 16,600 with a 10X9 APC on 30%. But I think the YS 91 heli would be more at home at a lower RPM, it can pull a lot more prop at a lower rpm than the 70 can. If I were you, Id use a 10X10 minimum, even better, look at 11X9, 11X10 or 11X11 along with playing with header length.
Humm.... that field looks familiar.

You are right FF, this engine will show the true power when a get it right, I am still cutting the header little by little and the RPM is still going up, I guess the right length will be around 10.60 in, and to get there I will have to cut the pipe as well.
I know that you know the field and you should come and race with us, you are a freakingfast great pilot, and everyone know that.
