Default Need a new plane, want it to be FAST!

OK I doinked my trainer over the weekend while I had a friend up on a buddy box. Bad receiver, no control plane went in. So anyway I have an OS 46 SF and some servos. I want to put it in something fast. I was looking at the RipMax Rapier. Any opinions on this or another plane I should buy? I want to be able to join the revvers brotherhood, so it should be pretty fast.

Thanks!

Default Clarification.

I also want my plane to be an ARF, since I don't have much time to build, and I would like to keep it under $175. Like I said the rapier meets these qualifications, any opinions on it or maybe something better?

Thanks!

Default Allan

Everybody has different taste in styles of planes,me included.
But I put this Shrike 40 together and it hung in the garage over a year and finally decided to load it up.
If you want something of this sort believe me you'll be fast. And at $49.99 each you can buy a few. It's a hand launcher but a ball and very easy to put together.
My 2 cents

Default Shrike

Shrike is made by Lanier.
Tower has them on sale now for 49.99.
I forgot but a guy came to the field yesterday with a fast one.
Go to Cermark and look at the Bobcat ARF.Very nice plane, even comes with the engine. His had the other engine besides the TT and it was quiet fast. I think this plane comes with everything for 169.
Quiet a deal, especially after seeing one..

What about the Predator or the Viper 500 from Great planes. How would they compare to the rapier? I would imagine the Rapier would be faster. What's everyone's opinion?

Unfortunately the Shrike is a kit only. I am looking for an ARF. Don't have that much time to invest in a kit.

The predator would work very well with the .46.

You would be looking at speeds around 110 mph.

Not sure what a ripmax is, but an arf can't get much easier to put together than the predator. As long as your transmitter can do a V-Tail mix, the predator is a great choice.

Thanks for the info. I would imagine this would be compareable to the Great planes Viper 500? It looks about the same. No ailerons on this type of plane though correct? that would take some getting used to. Anyway, go to www.towerhobbies.com and do a search for ripmax rapier. It is a delta wing type plane.

As far as I know, the viper has been discontinued for quite some time. Quickees have ailerons, but they tend to be small. Enough to roll the plane, but don't plan on doing any 3d with one of these.

Nah, just looking for speed. Does the predator have ailerons? The description does make me think that they don't. Tower says they are getting them in late Sept. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXEUN3&P=7

This description doesn't sound like it has ailerons either. Oh well still open to other suggestions.

Take a look here... http://www.rcuniverse.com/showthread...r&pagenumber=2

Looks like a good plane. *But*... if the ARF is tranparent better think twice. I, for one, will never fly a fast transparent plane again.

If u really pump it up with a hot engine it may be a teeny tiny bit hard to trak when it's invisible.

How about a Whiplash??

Aren't Whiplashes pretty pricy? As far as the trans parent Arf goes, a little trim should take care of that.

Default Whoooaaa!

I just took a look at your link, and that looks like a new plane (Great Planes Viper 500).

Their use to be a Viper 500 that Hobbico made, but that was a low wing standard tailed plane. This appears to be a new plane, almost looks like a duplicate of the Predator.

It does have ailerons, they are just hard to see in the picture.

So the predator has ailerons as well? Mabey I'll go with one of those. I am kinda new to this speed plane thing, do the delta's tend to be the fastest, or something like a Predator or a military jet? Or does it all just come down to power? Thanks for the info.

So you have spare .46 around and want a fast plane...?

Check this one out:Magnum ARF

They sell this plane mainly with a tuned Webra Speed 50 as a combo, but you can also order the plane separately...

I believe it costs like 100$ or something in that region... cheap speed...

Default Magnum

RudeBoy,
I thought about the magnum, but I didn't nkow if the 46 SF would be enough engine for it. Maybe if I put a tuned pipe on it, what do you think?

The Magnum will be as fast or faster on that .46 as the other planes mentioned here... and with a 9x6 prop or something like that it will probably go vertically out of sight...

I'm pretty sure it will be faster than any of the Q500 planes when propped properly... A quickee just has too much wing for all out speed... on the other hand it has a landing gear of course...

It will be faster than a Shrike 40...

And it will give the Diamond Dusts and Whiplashes a good run for their money...

And of course, if you pipe the engine properly it will be faster than on a muffler... that goes for every speed plane...

From the price difference between a Magnum and an ARF Quickee or Whiplash you can buy a VERY nice tuned pipe...

The Magnum isn't the best finished ARF around but the structure is sound and it is hard to beat for the price I think.
I know the stucture is sound, because mine nosed in last week due to a broken aileron servo, and the plane itself was virtually undamaged. I'm bolting it back together as we speak after cleaning the engine and fitting new bearings...

Sounds good to me. I guess that will be what I end up getting. Sounds like a great deal. Can anyone tell me the cheapest place to pick one up in the states?

Default Where to buy a Magnum

Pig.........

For an ARF Magnum w/o engine & pipe, try 954-476-5572. That's Modellbau in S Florida He had only a couple kits left last week. They're about $120. I've bought there without problems.

Magnums will be scarce because they're changing manufacturers and it'll be several months before the pipeline begins to be filled.

Thanks Arthur! Unfortunately, it doesn't look as if I will have the Ducats until another 2 months, so I guess I will save it for a winter project.

Default Tuned pipe

BTW, which pipe would you choose for this O.S. 46 SF ?

(I have one too, but no idea which is the most appropriate pipe)

I had the Macs Pre-tuned pipe on an OS 46 FX and it made a world of difference. I would try that. I also have a tower muffler, gonna see how it does on the SF before I go and buy another Macs Pre-tuned system.
