Demon-Outlaw mix = SLOTH
 

I like the Screaming Demons and Outlaw planes but decided to mix the two. I ended up with a 36" span delta that looks like an Outlaw but has the Demon thin airfoil and upright engine mounting. Not to mention I build with coroplast so things had to be adjusted for the material.
So why SLOTH? Screaming Little Outlaw THing

The spar is 8% thickness tapered 1/4" poplar with AL barstock center brace.

Elevon Servos are HS-475 with XL Dubro Arms. The servos are mounted to a 1/8" ply plates glued in the wing and a piece of PVC act as a zip tie backers on the outside.

Pushrods are 4-40 but my LHS was out of right angle locks so I just used some pushrod EZ connecters. This way they are not bearing any mechanical load.

Engine is a Webra Speed .36 with Macs .25-.32 pre-tuned header/pipe assembly. The header is just over 3" long which I understand to be about ideal for this engine. The prop was just there for CG. Both the engine and exhaust were ebay finds. It fires up easily with a chicken stick, has tons of compression and feels like new.

The 6oz tank sits right behind the AL spar brace, a small 6V battery sits under the hatch right behind the engine, on top of the throttle servo.
CG is 13" from the rudder line.

It really flies great. Slows down to a nice high alpha and then can rocket vertical until you stop it.
Launch is simple. WOT to clear it out and just let go. :) I was running an APC 8x8 at ~18,000 on the ground but switched to an APC 9x7 at ~16,800 on the ground. The 9x7 is a perfect match as others have said. Running 10% fuel and an OS #8 plug.

I had to reduce the throws and add more expo after the first few flights. Once I get used to it I can't wait to explore more of the slow flight agility. it still rolls like a drill now. LOL

I haven't got around yet to designing a new version of the Demon with a big central fin/rudder like that, but believe me I've had it in mind for a while and have doodled it a few times..

MJD if you made one of these i would have to buy at least a couple of them. now i gotta get back down into the shop and finish my Demon. :D

why not a horizontal engine solution?

for me It seems more aerodynamic than upright...
