New killer micro delta

Here is my high speed micro delta, constructed in 8 minutes from 1mm Depron foam. I think it has a top speed potential similar to some of the prop jets I see here, based on the horsepower available and nice thin wing section (about 0.8%). A little touchy to trim out (rudder only deltas aren't popular for some reason??), had to clip the vertical fins to get rid of some spiral instability. Unlike most high power deltas, this one doesn't like wind.. something to do with a lack of control authority, power, mass, or something like that.

This is a Power Up 3.0 by the way.. they actually work. I had a long flight on the "Predator" paper model, turning wide figure eights at about 30 feet altitude in the ball diamond, steering with my iPhone. But.. I must say that you have to do a really good job on the paper airplane, some might find it finicky. I find it to be good cheap innocent fun conjuring up quickie foam models for them. Reminds me of days of yore, having a Jetex 50 and a tin of fuel pellets and a bit of balsa stock, lessee what to build today? (would have been nice to have CA in 1968)

All kids should be gifted one of the Power up 2.0 - the FF version of the power unit - and turned loose with a pad of paper, a roll of scotch tape, and some AA batteries.

And you are going to put which ducted fan engine on this one?

Will it fly with a Jett or Nelson Q40 engine on it? You could even cut the prop slightly down, and give it more pitch.

There are some micro quadcopter props that will work if I drill them through, and clip some diameter. My son has a Proto X and they have a bit more pitch & are better molded. Soon as he buggers the tips on one of the two RH props it's mine.

I made a rudder/elevator delta with the motor and flight gear from one of the little Flyzone Neuport 17's (those things strip gears and the drives breaks loose too easily), and a trimmed quad prop. About 10" span 2mm Depron, underslung rudder for proverse roll.. use a tall-ish fin/rudder and it works great.

Indoor micro pylon races!!! How fast does this wee one fly??

Not. Plus the turning radius is, um, challenging.. stally rudder only type flying with a 1cm sq rudder.

How much dihedral does it have..?
It surely could use some, plus placing the rudders further aft.

It has a few degrees. The verticals are cut down to minimum area to give the poor rudder a chance to induce some yaw. I made a second model that works better than this, 2mm depron and a rough facsimile of the paper airplane design that worked well. Wind is not its friend.

The FF version is good fun too.

Now that's neat!

1,2 the original version
3 in the box
4,5 the newer version, flies better.
6 the FF version.. supercap + motor/prop, 4xAA charger.
