Or is this engine built solely for the planes with inverted mounted engines? Like Dago Red's from Wolf and such? |
This engine is for inverted engine planes, but work also upright.

Hmmmmmmm, very interesting. I would assume a counter balanced spinner is needed, what are the chances you have a 2" spinner to go with it? Does it include the pipe?

Spinner is 38mm, I got pipe to go whit it also. I use full carbon props. You canot use APC they won't last on 30.000rpm. Compare to New MB or DKT this IR is a lot easier to use and setup, but -2000RPM slower. We call this IR engines to "no trouble".

whats the price? Not great for a delta - I'd have to decide whether to fill the intake with dirt or scrape the head. :confused: Or mount it sidewinder style. Or use a better airframe. |

Actually the spinner is not counter balanced. Blalanced weights are on crank shaft

I don't think a tru turn spinner would hold together at 30,000 rpm and not sure who else would have one that would.

I think a Tru Turn will probably handle 30K just fine. If you look at the Jett or Nelson Q40 spinners: they are basically the same construction (the parts that matter anyway) ...at they're not that far from 30K when the plane's at speed. Jett has a 2" counterbalanced spinner for use on these engines (I don't know if it's on his website, but I know he makes them since I have one), and Tru Turn is a precision high quality product also.
Perhaps all you need is a custom cone and mounting nut to mate a Jett spinner to the IR engine, if you are hesitant about the Tru Turn. These things are not very hard to make with a lathe. A shop with some CNC equipment could whip those parts out for you in minutes. A suitable engine mount will probably give you more grief. Most F3D engines are bolted to an aluminium engine pan that is glued into the front of the plane. They don't use a "firewall" like we know it. |
I don't think 30,000 rpm is an issue for a 2" turned aluminum spinner.

I'm nervous about it, I've had 2 Dave Brown aluminum spinners and the aluminum spinner that came with the weston magnum come apart on me on engines that were barely pushing 20,000rpm. I know tru turns are about the best ones out there typically, but it still makes me nervous.
I'm ordering a JETT FAI practice motor right now, but if I can scrape a little more $$$ together I think I might have to take one of these crazy ass things..... |
The Dave Brown spinners are spun aluminium sheet metal ...not even close to being in the same league as a spinner machined from solid barstock.
I don't know how the Weston spinners are made, but at that price there's a 99.5% chance it's cheap stuff from the far east. Again, not in the same league. |
LGM i think the Jett would be a wiser choice.2000 rpm less and no counterbalanced spinner....

Those DB spinners sound like they should not be used on reciprocating engines whatsoever if the safety limit is that low.The rotational forces on the spinner are not insignificant, but they are not that scary. Esp in 2" and smaller. I'm sure none have flown apart on a TT .40 / 11-6, but 20k is not uncommon. They should have a safety limit noted somewhere.
